What is VLSI?

• Very-large-scale integration (VLSI) is the process of creating an Integrated Circuit (IC) by

combining millions of transistors into a single chip.
• IC: to realize an electronic circuit
• Analog
• Digital
• Might consist of a CPU, ROM, RAM and other glue logic.

• VLSI technology let IC designers to add all of these into a single chip.

• Before VLSI technology, most ICs had a limited set of functions they could perform.

Transistor technology: Emergence of VLSI

• First transistor in Bell labs,1948

• Technology evolution
– Before 1960s, transistors and resistors as individual parts
• Eventually transistor size reduced
– Number of transistors on a single chip increase

• Moore’s law
– The number of transistors on a chip will double every 1.5 to 2 years. (from 1980 to 2010)

VLSI Design Challenges

• VLSI is about designing systems on chips.

But…..the designs are with high degree of complexity,

– Need to use structured design techniques
– Sophisticated design tools
to manage the complexity of the design.

• Which type of design techniques and tools ??????

– Accept the fact that any technology we learn will be out of date soon.
– We are trying to develop and use techniques that will go beyond the technology.

VLSI Revolution: Advantages

• Reduces the Size of Electronic Circuits.

• Reduces the effective cost of the circuits/devices.
• Increases the Operating speed of circuits
• Requires less power than before.
• Higher Reliability

VLSI Applications

In today's world VLSI chips are widely used in various branches of Engineering:

• PCs, Work Station, Servers……………

• Digital Signal Processing (DSP Chips, data acquisition systems….)
• Industrial Automation
• Commercial Electronics (ATM….)
• Automobiles (over 100 ICs: antilock brake, airbag, stereo system, fuel injection system,
display panel, smart suspension…….)
• Medicine (artificial eye, implants, endoscopy…….)
• and many more.
