THICKNESS MEASUREMENT SYSTEM USING ULTRASOUND

Objective:

The objective of this project is to Measure a thickness of material using ultrasound sensor.

Scope:

Ultrasonic thickness measurement is a method of performing non-destructive

measurement of the local thickness of a solid element basing on the time taken by the ultrasound
wave to return from surface. Measurement is typically performed with an ultrasonic thickness
gauge.

Brief Methodology:

This project is designed by following blocks,

 Driver Circuit with Relay.

 Microcontroller.
 Ultrasonic sensor TX, RX.
 Keypad.
 Alarm.

In this project we are using ultrasonic sensor for measuring the objects thickness from the
surface. It consists of ultrasonic transmitter and receiver. The transmitter always transmits
ultrasonic wave, the receiver receives the reflected wave and converts it in to digital pulse.

The ultrasonic sensor sends a high-low pulse to the controller. The pulse time will vary
depending upon the closeness between the sensor and the object. Using this pulse timing the
controller measures the distance.

From this distance we can calculate the object thickness. The set thinness will be given
through keypad, if thickness goes beyond the set value, alarm turns on. LCD is used to Display
the thickness of object.
Advantages:

 Compatible size.
 Low cast.
 Easy to implement.

Applications:

 Industrial automation
 This can be used in heavy industries for measuring thickness of object.
