Hook – Yesterday during reading we learned Turn and Talk – Discuss the skill for the week
about our skill for the week. Can you turn and (Theme)
talk and remind your classmates what our skill
for the week is?

The strategy for the week is theme. The is the

lesson that a character learns in the story.
Mini Lesson – Today, we are going to be
learning our strategy for the week. Our strategy
for the week is summarizing. Summarizing is
retelling a story in your own words.
Discuss the purpose of summarizing text.
Discuss Summarizing Graphic Organizer. (What
other details would you add to your summary?)

Lets do some purpose making, Why do we need
to know how to summarize texts? (Summarizing
helps you to remember a text)
There are certain things that a summary has to
have to be considered a complete summary.
(Introduce Graphic Organizer)
Read summary aloud discussing the missing
pieces.
In groups, read summary, underlining the pieces
that make up a good summary. Discuss as a whole
group.

Let’s practice finding the parts of a summary by

reading this revised summary.

You will get more practice with this strategy

while we are reading the story and in your

Writing: Introductory Paragraphs. An
introductory paragraph introduces the topic of
your paper.
It should have a topic sentence and a hook.
A topic sentence is a sentence that tells the main
idea of a paper.
Find the topic sentence of this passage. What is
the main idea of this passage?

your field trip. Remember to hook your readers
and tell them what they are reading about.
