Unit 4 Reading

Grade 7 English

Objectives:
7.4 The student will read and determine the meanings of unfamiliar words and phrases within
authentic texts.
● 7.4e Use context and sentence structure to determine meanings and differentiate among multiple
meanings of words.

7.5 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts, literary
nonfiction, poetry, and drama.
● 7.5a Describe the elements of narrative structure including setting, character development, plot,
theme, and conflict and how they influence each other.
● 7.5g Describe the impact of word choice, imagery, and literary devices including figurative
language in an author’s style.
● 7.5h Compare/contrast details in literary and informational nonfiction texts.
● 7.5i Make inferences and draw conclusions based on the text.

7.6 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of nonfiction texts.
● 7.6a Skim materials using text features including type, headings, and graphics to predict and
categorize
information.
● 7.6b Identify an author’s organizational pattern using textual clues, such as transitional words
and phrases.
● 7.6g Identify the main idea.
● 7.6h Summarize text identifying supporting details.
● 7.6i Create an objective summary including main idea and supporting details.
● 7.6j Identify cause and effect relationships.

7.7 The student will write in a variety of forms to include narrative, expository, persuasive, and
reflective with an emphasis on expository and persuasive writing.
● 7.7d Organize writing structure to fit form or topic.

1. Unit III Assessment Reading Multiple Choice
2. Common Lit article in order for students to review/practice Notice and Note Signposts (hand
each student a paper copy of shortened, modified Notice and Note Signpost activity)
3. Small Group: Pull those students who are still unsure of how to find and then document
different signposts
4. Assign Chapters 1-6 of The Lightning Thief and give each student a paper copy of full Notice
and Note Signpost Activity
Homework: Students are to read Chapters 1-6 of The Lightning Thief
Monday 2/11 and Tuesday 2/12
1. Introduce main text of unit
Wednesday 2/13 and Thursday 2/14
1. Author Study to be completed in the library with Mrs. Kovacs.
2. Those classes who are not in the library will do an achieve and/or paired passage.
3. Students may also be reading Chapters 1-6 of The Lightning Thief in class

Friday 2/15 and Monday 2/18


7.5g Describe the impact of word choice, imagery, and literary devices including figurative language in
an author’s style.
1. Quick Write/Journal/Every Day Edit in Writer’s Notebook
2. Show students where electronic copy of Notice and Note is located in Schoology
3. Figurative Language Quick Review
4. Pull passage from The Lightning Thief (Chapters 1-6) and using graphic organizer model how
figurative language is used by the author in the passage. Give students two more passages to
complete on their own.
5. Have students practice this skill with an excerpt from a young adult novel.
6. Students will write a short paragraph using figurative language with a purpose.

Tuesday 2/19 and Wednesday 2/20
