(Growth Stages of Lowland Rice)

Vegetative Phase

Dapog seedling Wetbed seedling(punla)

- 20-25 days old
- 9-14 days old
- Additional labor cost
- Advantage: no wilting or transplanting
shock - A day before transplanting, need to uproot
since it is in soil
- No additional labor forces
- Not eaten by ‘kuhol’ due to being
- Disadvantage: Susceptible to golden snail bigger/higher
due to soft state
- With transplanting shock of 5-7 days
- A day before/ cut tips to reduce
transpiration and reduce chances of wilting
 Tillering Stage
- 40-45 days old
- Majority of activities such as replanting
and especially weeding is done on this
stage
- Where fertilizer is applied
- In case fertilizer is not applied or not
enough next stage

Reproductive Phase

Panicle initiation
- Second fertilizing stage
- Weeding too (spot weeding) is applied
- People cannot last in field because of
stems due to stem elongation
- Fertilized at this stage so brittle
 Flowering/Heading stage
Booting Stage
- Emerged head
- Fertilization is finished
- Rice bugs are attracted
- Flag leaf has emerged
- Monitor insects and pesticide if must
- The flower/panicle has emerged
- Rodents during this period
- Avoid going in field because you may
damage the plants - Critical period
- Careful of rodents(favorite) - White heads can result after wind from
typhoons( results to ipa na walang laman)
- Insects are attracted to this stage
 Ripening Phase

Milking Stage
- Some panicles are already bent
- Already pollinated
- When soft grain husks are squeezed,
white substance is released
- Substance is favorite of rice bug
- Monitor insects regularly.

Hard dough stage

- Inflorescence becomes yellowish in color

- Fields drained in this stage for easier
walking in harvest time
 Maturity stage

- 80% of base of panicle is already ripened

- Ready for harvest
- 90-95% for hybrids
- 80-85% for rice varieties
- Don’t wait for 100%
- Limited time for peak condition of rice so
don’t waste it
- Can be used for plant seedlings good
quality if right timing
- If sold, rice is still heavy due to right
amount of moisture content inside
- Grains are already present in this stage
- Beware of birds(use bird tape or
scarecrow)
