DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY
• Remember the Distributive Property
Area
Height = 9a - 3 a(b+c) =(a·b)+(a·c)

• It is the same thing when multiplying two polynomials

THE AREA OF A RECTANGLE IS LENGTH X WIDTH.
HOWEVER, IF THE VALUE OF “A” IS NOT GIVEN WE
CANNOT SOLVE FOR THE AREA , AND IF THE AREA (a + b)(c + d) = ( a )(c + d) + ( b )(c + d)
IS NOT GIVEN WE CANNOT SOLVE FOR “A”. SO,
HOW DO WE FIND THE AREA?

EXAMPLE NOW YOU TRY!

Multiply using the distributive property: (7x + 4) (x + 9) Multiply using the distributive property: (x + 8) (3x - 6)
(7x + 4) (x + 9) = ( 7x )( x + 9 ) + ( 4 )( x + 9 )
(x + 8) (3x - 6) = ( x )( 3x - 6 ) + ( 8 )( 3x - 6 )

= ( 7x )( x + 9 ) + ( 4 )( x + 9 )
= ( x )( 3x - 6 ) + ( 8 )( 3x - 6 )
=( 7x2 + 63x ) + ( 4x + 36 ) = 7x2 + 67x + 36
= ( 3x2 - 6x ) + ( 24x - 48 ) = 3x2 + 18x - 48

FOIL METHOD FOIL METHOD

• The FOIL method is an acronym and it is used similarly to
the distributive property

(a + b)(c + d)
L : Last
I: Inner
O: Outer
F: First = ac + ad + bc + bd
Smart Art Dual-Coding Technique

Multiplying Polynomials

EXAMPLE FIRST
F : First
Multiply: ( 2y + 5 ) ( 7y – 6 ) Multiply the first terms of each binomial

( 2y + 5 ) ( 7y – 6 )
Use the FOIL Method

14y2

OUTER INNER
O : Outer I : Inner
Multiply the outer terms of each binomial Multiply the inner terms of each binomial
( 2y + 5 ) ( 7y – 6 ) ( 2y + 5 ) ( 7y – 6 )

14y2 - 12y 14y2 - 12y + 35y

Multiplying Polynomials

LAST
L : Last Finally, combine like terms:
Multiply the inner terms of each binomial ( 2y + 5 ) ( 7y – 6 )
( 2y + 5 ) ( 7y – 6 ) = 14y2 - 12y + 35y - 30
= 14y2 + 23y - 30
14y2 - 12y + 35y - 30

NOW YOU TRY! BOX METHOD

Multiply using the FOIL method: (4a - 5) (5a + 2) The Box Method can be useful when multiply any two
Polynomials, and is not limited to Binomials
(4a - 5)(5a + 2)
(a + b)(c + d) c +d
a ac + ad
= 20a2 + 8a - 25a - 10
+ b + bc + bd
= 20a2 - 17a - 10
Progress Monitoring Question
= ac + ad + bc + bd Dual-Coding Technique

BOX METHOD EXAMPLE

Find the product: (y2 - 3y + 1) (2y2 + 5y + 3)
2y2 + 5y +3
y2 2y4 + 5y3 + 3y2
- 3y - 6y3 - 15y2 - 9y
+ 1 + 2y2 + 5y +3
Dual-Coding Technique = 2y4 – y3 – 10y2 – 4y + 3 Dual-Coding Technique

Multiply: (9p - 2) (3p+1) Multiply the following using any method:
3p +1 1. (2g3 – 4g2 + 12g + 3) (8g + 7)
9p 27p2 + 9p
2. (3k – 5) (2k2 + 6k)
-2 - 6p -2
3. (9m2 + m + 11) ( –m2 – 7m + 2)
= 27p2 +9p – 6p + 2 = 27p2 +3p+ 2
