EARLY AMERICAN PERIOD IN THE PHILIPPINES
Public schools were established in the Philippines weeks after the Americans
defeated the Spanish power in Manila by the United States military government. This
was done with the purpose of introducing democracy, and to train the Filipino people
to use English language as medium of communication. The introduction of the English
language helped in the production of modern literature.
Early writings of Filipino authors were closely similar with the writings of
famous American writers emphasizing form instead of substance.
Imitative writings were common during this period although a few stood out
yet a new era had been made in the flowing of Philippine literature in English.

a big scary dog appeared. Liza quickly climbed a tree. Flor wanted help but her
