Further information
Two PhD scholarships available funded by ARC. Metal additive manufacturing (or 3D printing) is an emerging
field that offers a revolutionary approach to develop high performance engineering alloys.
In this project, PhD students will receive comprehensive training in sample fabrication by laser direct
deposition (LMD) and selective laser melting (SLM), microstructure characterization and mechanical
properties assessment.
Training on use of SEM, EBSD, FIB and TEM will be provided by the RMIT Microscopy and Microanalysis
Facility (RMMF).
Training on fundamental understanding of solidification and phase transformations in the context of laser
additive manufacturing will be provided jointly by Dr Dong Qiu and Professor Ma Qian.
The PhD students are also encouraged to attend at least one international and two domestic conferences
and to publish his/her research in highly ranked journals.
Finally, when the PhD students complete their degree, it is expected that his/her experience and expertise in
metal 3D printing will be highly sought-after in the future job market.
