The Wilds Christian Association, Inc. is an
independent, nondenominational, nonprofit, 501(c)
(3) organization created for the purpose of operating
Christian camps and conference centers. We are
fundamental in our beliefs, Bible-centered in our
philosophy, and evangelistic in our outreach.
The Wilds Christian Association, Inc. presently
operates a Christian camp and conference center in
the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina
that is open year-round. The camp has a carefully
selected and trained staff and averages nearly
20,000 campers per year. In 2009 The Wilds of New
England began ministry at our campsite in Deering,
New Hampshire. In this peaceful, rural setting we
experienced good growth in attendance at our
summer camps as well as in our limited fall schedule
programs. We anticipate a continuing steady growth
and expansion of the ministry at this New England
location.
In addition to providing a God-honoring music
publication service as an integral part of our
ministry, The Wilds Christian Association, Inc. has
also established the CampsAbroad program to assist
others in the formation and operation of Christian
camp ministries around the world.

 This past year we set out to gather information about
the ongoing impact of CampsAbroad from the past 17 years,
and the results were encouraging. Since 2001, CampsAbroad
has sent out 150 teams to 45 different countries on all 6
populated continents. Additionally, last year over 500 local
churches participated in camps that have been assisted by

CampsAbroad. They brought over 10,000 teens. That’s a lot
of ministry—mostly in small batches of campers. Little by
little. One camp at a time.
 10,000 might sound like a lot of teens, but it really isn’t
when you consider this staggering fact: approximately 1/3
of the world’s population is currently under the age of 20.
That’s almost 2.5 billion young people. Our passion has
always been to reach young people, and that need is more
urgent than ever. With that in mind, we’ve set an audacious
goal for CampsAbroad: we are
making a push to double the number
of young people that are being
reached through these camps by
2022. That would be 20,000 young
people attending a Bible teaching
camp each year.

On a pleasant,
fall evening, 3 couples
met together at the home of a young
34-year-old college administrator,
Ken Hay and his wife, Diane. At the
dinner table, the conversation came
around to a business partnership.
The 2 other men were determining
to step out in faith to plan and build
modest apartments as an investment,
with the potential to provide a low-
cost living option to young married
couples attending college. With the 2
excitedly agreeing to take the plunge
to meet with the bank to finance the
deal, Ken Hay’s hand came down hard
on the table, rattling the silverware
and china. He said, “If you guys have
the faith to step out and plan an
apartment complex, why can’t we
have faith to build a quality camp in
the southeast?” That night, The Wilds
(yet unnamed) was born in the heart
of a man who loved God, the ministry,
and young people!

 As he tells it, Ken lay awake and
planned the entire camp in his mind.
After all, he and Dr. Walter Fremont had
been meeting 2—sometimes 3—days a
week to pray for such a ministry. Now
was the time! Ken ran into an older
student, Carl Blythe, who had access
to a trust, bringing the possibility of
some financing. Dr. Joe Henson, an avid
outdoorsman and organized camping
enthusiast, joined the team. They
comprised the 3 founders of the dream
that was to become The Wilds!
Now, 50 years and some half a
million campers later, The Wilds is part
of the rich, spiritual tradition of families
and individuals all over the country and
the world. Camps all over the country
build on the freely-shared philosophy.
Through CampsAbroad, more than 25
camps practice the few, strong biblical
principles that bring Truth and love to
children all over the world.
Ken Hay resides in Greenville,
South Carolina, with his wife of 63
years. At age 85, he remains actively
interested in the pursuits of The Wilds,
The Wilds of New England, and
CampsAbroad. Although he is not
able to be on the campsite as often as
he would like, his spirit to know and
pray is as strong as ever. The heritage
our founders have set in place is still
strong in the minds of the thousands of
staff members who have sat under his
teaching and example.
It is true that God uses all events
and all external circumstances to
manifest His glory. I for one, thank
the Lord for those apartments—one
of which my son and his wife lived in
while he was in seminary. Primarily
though, their beginning brought on the
“hand that slapped the table!”

A Change is Developing

In July 1984,
I attended a camp at The Wilds for the first time (exactly one year
after my teenage children had attended and loved it). They were
absolutely correct—it was great! From that time forward I have
had an unchanging great love for and respect of the miraculous
work God does through the various ministries of The Wilds. It
has been my privilege to serve as the Director of Development for
The Wilds since 1987, and that has been the most encouraging,
vocational journey of a lifetime. What a joy to have a front row
seat during amazing additions and upgrades to our facilities!
The breadth of ministry has also increased substantially with the
addition of The Wilds of New England and CampsAbroad. The
growth in the number of participating campers has risen to over
20,000 annually. God has done this miraculous work through
thousands of friends like each of you—thank you from the
bottom of our hearts for your wonderful encouragement.
I love this ministry, and it has been a privilege to be a small
part of it for over 31 years. God has now prepared the way for
a younger person to start assuming my responsibilities and
assist in keeping and growing this ministry for God’s glory. It
is with much confidence and excitement that I present to you
Doug Gorsline as the new Assistant Director of Development
of The Wilds. It is very encouraging to us that this successor
has come from within the organization and has already proven
himself as a key part of our ministry “family.”

The Wilds on a full-time basis
since 1986 when he graduated
from Clemson University.
Prior to that he was a camper or
summer staff member every year
since 1973. He knows The Wilds! As all
of you who have ever visited our North Carolina campsite have
seen, the grounds are always meticulously maintained and the
landscaping beautifully designed—Doug has been responsible for
that for many years. His wife, Sonja, graduated from Bob Jones
University in 1987, and she has been involved in many facets
of the ministry as well as being a conscientious Mom to her 4
children (who are all now married). Doug and Sonja have recently
moved to Greenville. They will miss the staff fellowship and their
serving opportunities at the campsite (their only home since
getting married in 1986), but they are eagerly looking forward to
this new adventure.
In the coming months as he assumes his responsibilities
in our Greenville corporate office, please welcome Doug in his
next step of serving God through this ministry. You are going to
love him and will quickly understand why God has provided this
proven servant to steward this part of the ministry as The Wilds
moves ahead into our next 50 years of service to churches,
schools, families, and campers of all ages. I TRUST that you are as
excited as I am about God’s perfect plan for The Wilds.

Staff News:
Chris and Tara Anastos are happy to announce the
arrival of their twins, Theo David and Nicole Hope. They
were born on January 7, 2019. Theo weighed 3 pounds 2
ounces and was 16 inches long. Nicole weighed 3 pounds
6 ounces and was 17 inches long.
Ken Collier is the President and Interim Director
for The Wilds. Willie Partin is currently our Interim
Assistant Director and Program Manager. We anticipate
these men guiding us over the next year or so, while we
prayerfully and diligently seek God’s will for a camp
director in North Carolina.

Tim and Rachel Endean joined the CampsAbroad
staff in March. They are traveling the United States
and abroad as field representatives. Tim and Rachel
both worked on our summer staff at The Wilds of New
England for several summers. We are happy to have

Elizabeth Harding joined the Greenville office staff
in August 2018, and is serving as one of our Summer
Registrations secretaries. Elizabeth served on our
summer staff in North Carolina for two summers and
looks forward to helping sponsors and parents register
their campers for camp.
Tim and Dawn Kennedy are happy to announce the
arrival of their daughter, Aubreylynn Ruth. She was born
on November 27, 2018, weighed 9 pounds, and was
