Modular platform trailers –
pendulum axle technology for top performance

Modular platform trailers answer the ever growing demands on

modern heavy duty transportation systems by providing solutions
that assure flexibility. The hydraulically supported and guided
pendulum axles form the core of the INTER COMBI, FLAT COMBI and
EURO COMBI series of modular platform trailers. These vehicles can
be combined in a variety of ways to transport loads that can exceed
1,000 t at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

Whether hauling heavy loads at speeds of up to 80 km/h across

Europe, America and Asia, or moving oversized loads on site or at
port, SCHEUERLE offers a wides range of platform trailers that pro-
vide an economic and effective solution.

SCHEUERLE platform trailers provide exeptional maneuverability in

tight spaces by utilizing an unrivaled steering geometry with steering
angles up to 60°. Loading, negotiating steep loading ramps and diffi-
cult road conditions is done easily and safely due to the large axle
compensation and automatic load regulation.
The vehicles can be coupled either lengthwise or sideways allowing
them to be used as trailers or semi trailers. The INTER COMBI is also
available with drive axles and a drive unit (PPU = Power Pack Unit).

Decks and load bearing elements –
variety for your fleet

Flat bed decks are used for the transportation of tall cargoes Flat-bed deck
where the loading and passage height are decisive criteria.

Excavator decks are primarily used for the transportation of

construction machinery and crawler trucks.

Boiler decks or frame decks are suitable for universal use. They
expand manually or hydraulically to allow flexibility and capability in
handling a wide range of load dimensions.

Multifunctional hydraulic girder bridges are also used for carry-

ing self-supporting loads.

Long material transportation bolsters for self-supporting loads,

e.g. steel and concrete girders, steel pipes, etc., complete the Excavator deck
range of load bearing elements.

Plateaus or intermediate elements are generally coupled in bet-

ween the bogies, usually at the same height as the upper edge
of the platform in order to extend the loading surfaces for large,
but low-weight loads.

Side girder bridges are mainly used for transporting transformers

and generators.

Goosenecks – powered platform trailers

Design details for a competitive edge

The goosenecks can be used on the INTER COMBI, EURO COMBI and
FLAT COMBI series. A new, multifunctional steering transmission in
the gooseneck makes this possible. The lateral arrangement of the
compensating cylinders affords optimal compensation on uneven ter-
rain. There are basically 2 different types of goosenecks for the plat-
form trailers.

There are basically two different types of goosenecks for SCHEUERLE

Combi series platform trailers.

• The articulated goosenecks; coupled directly to the bogie via

a bolt coupling.
• The universal articulated gooseneck; fitted with a connection
for the deck hooks so that the loading deck can be coupled
directly to the gooseneck without the use of any adapter.

Both Goosenecks can be disconnected from the deck respectively

bogies, leaving the fifth-wheel load in place. The ability to adjust the
pressure on the fifth-wheel by means of the hydraulic differential
transmission and a second mechanical cylinder position, gives the
operator the flexibility of using a 3-axle or 4-axle prime mover. The
goosenecks are available in various weight categories and sizes.
The modular principle –
for efficient combinability
The modular system of SCHEUERLE’s platform trailers offer an
almost infinite number of combination that provide a logical solution
for every transport application. The appropriate number of axle lines
can be combined with or without adapters to give additional flexibility;
even in mixed fleets.
Wide range of accessories –
to make life easier

The mobile control unit can be used to control the lifting and lowering
functions as well as to intervene in the steering functions. This unit
can be mounted on the chassis in a fixed or pivoting arrangement. The
diesel power pack unit can also be integrated with the rear bogie for
a space-saving assembly.

The diesel and electric power pack units are available in various con-
figurations from 3,5 - 24 kW. Power pack units allow the platform trai-
lers to be operated independently and without the use of a prime
mover. The power pack units can be integrated with an operator
stand, if necessary.

The steering adjustment possibility can be easily made via a

weather-proof control unit that can be connected to the gooseneck,
bogie or mobile control unit.

The removable coupling bolt is hydraulically activated. Each platform

trailer is equipped with a lamellar coupling at the front end. A hydrau-
lic coupling bolt is installed for each bogie.

In the case of longitudinal coupling, the platform trailers are connec-

ted at the coupling points hydraulically, electrically and pneumatically.
The quick couplings provide a time-saving solution for connecting the
combinations. In this way, the continuity of all functions is guaranteed
with maximum economic efficiency.

The underdrive protection conforms to European regulations and is

locked in the lamellar coupling. It can be attached to the last platform
trailer of a combination by a simple procedure.

The lighting beam with five-chamber lights, detachable beacon light

and warning plates can be quickly and easily mounted on the last plat-
form truck. They are interchangeable between the ranges. The lighting
complies with the applicable EU standards for the heavy duty trans-
portation industry. Special country-specific versions can also be supp-
lied. Expandable warning plates with red-and-white limitation lights can
be easily affixed to the vehicles with magnetic holders.

A side underdrive protection, as prescribed in Japan for example,

is also available. It is screwed onto the side plates intended for side
coupling.

The gooseneck can be equipped with 1- 2 spare wheel holders and

a lifting device.

All the main components are well protected against damage.

The pipe fracture safety for the supporting system can also be
equipped with a dual circuit design on request. Many accessories
are interchangeable across the entire Combi line.

Bogies, support system –
keeping you on the right road

The bogies are available in 2 to 8-axle versions according to type.

They can be coupled transversally or longitudinally and some are also
available in a longitudinally split design for vehicle combinations requi-
ring a 1.5 width. The single modules of the platform ranges can be
coupled in any position of the combination, i.e. there is no distinction
between centre and end unit or left and right bogies. The bogie modu-
les can be used for both driving directions according to type.

The steering heads are equipped with taper roller bearings, ensuring
a long lifetime and excellent steering properties. This bearing arran-
gement minimizes the forces transmitted to the frame and other
steering components. The bearings can be adjusted if necessary in
order to maximize their useful life and reduce maintenance coasts.

The bogie frames a characterised by maximum flexural strength, tor-

sional rigidity and resistance torques. This is due to the use of high-
tensile steel and the computer-optimised design of all main compo-
nents. Load distribution frames are usually not required. The coupling
at the rear of the bogie is also designed to cope with exceptionally
heavy loads.

Either 3 or 4-point support can be selected according to the combi-

nation and load. The axles and goosenecks can be assembled to-
gether to support groups by means of directional control valves. They
can be arranged symmetrically or asymmetrically depending on the
combination. In this way, the support can be optimally adjusted to the
centre of gravity of the load.
Steering –
a pivotal factor

The steering angle of up to 60° and ensures unique manoeuvrability

in narrow curves and when positioning loads. The steering is perfor-
med according to the proven principle of hydraulic/mechanical two-
circuit displacement steering.

The steering angle of the drawbar is transmitted from the drawbar

coupling element via a central steering rod to the steering plate of the
first bogie. The 2 to 4-axle platform trailers have one steering plate,
and the 5 to 8-axle bogie have two. The steering cylinder fixed to the
steering plates transmit the steering angle to the other bogie by
displacement of hydraulic oil.

In the case of gooseneck combinations, the steering angle is trans-

mitted directly from the steering cylinders in the gooseneck to the
steering cylinders in the bogie. From the steering plate, the steering
angle is transmitted via upper tie rods to the pitman arms of the pen-
dulum axles. The easy accessibility and arrangement of the track rods
saves time when changing the wheel track. The truck rods allow a
small amount of longitudinal adjustment via right-left hand screw thre-
ads. The computer-optimised arrangement of the combination stee-
ring points guarantees precise steering and optimal cornering even in
long combinations.

In special cases, a cable winch steering can also be used. For this pur-
pose, the drawbar coupling element must be deactivated by uncoup-
ling the conical locking pins.

The hydraulic displacement steering is of 2-circuit design so that the

steering function remains intact even if one of the steering circuits
fails.
