Journal Articles:

The name of the journal article is called “Exploring the effects of project-based learning
in secondary mathematics education,” written by Vicki-Lynn Holmes and Yooyeun
Hwang on September 1st, 2016. The journal talks about a study that explores the effects
project-based learning for mathematics has on skill development and motivation.
Studies find that project based learning helps students garner a deeper understanding
of mathematics concepts and helps students apply mathematical knowledge to real-
world scenarios. Research also shows that PBL works well with students who already
have conceptual knowledge, but it is also detrimental to students who have a fake level
of concept knowledge. Also, a pedagogical approach to learning helps students succeed,
understand the information better and remember it in the future. The pedagogical
approach also helps students learn to learn. The more they understand the concepts,
the better at learning they will become. The journal ends by saying the because this
specific journal is an exploratory study, future studies will need to be held so determine
the true impact of PBL.
Theses and Dissertations:
Provide name of dissertation, author, year, and a brief summary (6 to 7 sentences) of
what the thesis/dissertation was about. Do not include your opinion.
The dissertation is called “Promoting Critical Mathematics Literacy in Secondary
Mathematics Teacher Education,” written by Michael Charles Fish, 2012. The
dissertation is a look at how math teachers conceptualize their practices and how those
practices are put into effect in the classroom. The study focuses on understanding the
core beliefs and values of the teachers to understand how these beliefs and values help
with critical math literacy. The analysis looked at the teachers strategies to help
understand the ways critical math literacy was promoted. The way critical math literacy
was observed was through six domains of math understanding to prepare students to
use math to comprehend social and moral decisions in order to lead to change. The
dissertation ended with explaining that the observations of math literacy help a person
see the world as it is and to make sound judgments.
Books:
Provide name of book, author and year. Provide one sentence on what the book is about.
The book is called “Teaching math, science, and technology in schools today: guidelines
for engaging both eager and reluctant learners” by Dennis Adams and Mary Hamm,
2014. The book offers unique and engaging ideas when it comes to teaching science,
math and technology by giving new ways for students and teachers to collaborate over
mathematical and scientific ideas.
Audio:
Provide name of audio, author and year. (Most of you will have to skip this search and
not count it as part of your five.)
No Audio.
Video:
The video is called “Secondary-maths: problem solving,” by Brook Lapping Productions,
2008. The genre is instructional television programs.
Reference:
Provide name of reference, author or publisher, year, and a sentence on what the
reference is about.
The reference is called “Math Anxiety and Gender,” written by James A Banks in 2012.
The reference is a call back thirty years ago when Sheila Tobias made her claim that
more women are anxious over math than men, and how research has been progressing
towards finding ways to accommodate that anxiety.
