Chapter 11 - Worldviews in Conflict Picture Book /Codex

You are the author and illustrator of a mini ​picture​ book


that describes the events of the invasion of the Aztec
empire by the Spanish. Your book should include writing
and pictures appropriate for ages of 8 - 11 year olds. You
have been asked to do the following;

a) Create a Title-page for the book you will create. Make sure to
come up with an engaging title, and an image which
represents the ​Spanish Conquest​ of the Aztecs.

b) Identify 10 different events that you believe are important. These will be the 10
events that you examine in your mini-picture book.

i) These events must be placed in the book according to their chronology.

c) On each page you will generate an image which represents the event in a way which
is clear and engaging.

d) Below the Image you will describe the event, summarizing who was involved, what
happened, and what the outcome was

e) You will make a comment on how this event reflects either the worldview of the
Spanish ​or the ​Aztec People.

Some ideas/events you may wish to include:


● Cortes learns of the rich Aztec empire and leaves Cuba to conquer Tenochtitlan.
● Cortes establishes Veracruz
● Cortes scuttled his ships
● Weapons are developed that are no match for the Aztecs. This also includes muskets and
horses.
● Cortes plans a strategy to conquer the Aztecs; he begins the march with his forces to
Tenochtitlan.
● On the way he conquers or befriends several groups of Indigenous people.
● Many Indigenous warriors join his ranks to attack the Aztec.
● Moctezuma decides to welcome the strangers inside the city.
● The Spaniards stay in the city and eventually slaughter many of the Aztecs.
● Moctezuma is arrested
● Cortes Battles the soldiers of Governor Velazquez
● The Aztecs turn on Moctezuma
● A smallpox epidemic kills many of the Aztec people.
● Cortes conquers the Aztecs and the Aztec empire ends.

Your book will only be 10 pages in length so you will have to choose the main events
carefully to tell the story. You will be marked with the following rubric.
