Papaya SOLO
Carica papaya L.

VARIETY FEATURES:

Fruit :
• Weight : 350 to 450 g
• Long shape (hermaphrodite fruit)
• Round shape with some ribs (female
fruit)
• Red and sweet flesh

Yield :
• 30 to 50 fruits by tree
• 40 to 50 t/ha (in 28 months)
• Continuous production in a year

AGROCLIMATIC NEEDS :

• Hot tropical climate (around 25°C)


• Low amplitude of temperature and hydrometry
• Pluviometry divided up all the year (1 500 to 2 000
mm/year) or anticipate irrigation during the drought.
• High of humus, good drain and aery soil
• Avoid windy location (or use break wind)

CROP ADVICES:
Sowing :
• In nursery
• In bed or in pot
• In a substrate compound of 2/3 of garden mould + 1/6 of humus good roten +
1/6 of sand (good mixed).
• Seeds need :300 g/ha
• Germination after 15 to 20 days
• Time in nursery : 7 to 8 weeks
Plantation :
• When plantlet have 4-5 true leaves (plant high : 30-50 cm)
• Size of the hole for the plantation : 60 cm deep and 70 cm broad
• Density : between 1,5 and 2 m of inter-ranks or in double lines spaced of4 m
• 2-3 plants by hole
• Mix in the earth of filling, 20 to 25 kg of farmyard, 1 kg of magnesian calcium
hydroxide or dolomite and 600 grams of phosphate.

Crop purification :
• There are 3 types of plant :

• Female plants : their flowers are bigger at the beginning and more and more fine
until the end. They produce ribbed round fruits not adapted to export market.
The plants have to be removed.

• Male plants : their flowers are really fine at the beginning and are a little more
bulbous at their extremity. Often male plants are the first to flower. They are
organized in long pendulous panicle branched at the leaf axil : 50 to 75 cm of
length. These male plants, which do not give fruits must be pulled out.

• Hermaphrodites plants: flowers are bulbous at the beginning and pumped up at


the end extremity.

Maintenance and fertilization :
• Regular weeding
• Mulching (if necessary)
• Organic dressing : 30 to 50 kg of farmyard or compost per tree
• Mineral dressing : in 3 or 4 applications per year and tree : 250 to 300 g of
nitrogen, 250 g of phosphoric acid, 500 g of potash.
• Regular watering (in dry season a minimum of 120 to 150 mm/month has to be
brought)

COMMON PESTS AND DISEASES :


• Anthracnose
• Powdery mildiou
• Mosaic virus
• Papaya ring spot virus (PRSV)
• Nematode
• Fusarium
• Mealy bugs

CROP CYCLE :
• Nursery during 7 to 8 weeks (in West Africa often in september-october)
• Plantation when leaflet have 4-5 tue leaves (->january-february)
• Start of flowering : 5 months after the plantation
• First harvest : 9 to 10 months after the plantation
