Exemplary Reflection

For my exemplary piece, I chose an essay I wrote for my English 1301 class. The essay

was about a book called “Born a Crime”. We had to read the book and write an essay a literary

analysis essay. The learning target was “I can write an essay that determines theme, author’s

purpose, or main idea in a literary work” . I started the essay with the motivation to earn an

exemplary grade for the assignment as well as the class. .

English 1301 was my second dual credit class and my first English dual credit class. I

was unsure about how the class would go and how I was going to perform. As one of our first

assignments in the class, we had to write an essay that would evaluate our writing abilities. I got

a 100 on that and was overly confident going into writing my next two proper essays. I wrote my

next essay called an argumentative essay and earned a 90 on the rough draft. For my final

version, I was only earn a 95. I was disappointed that I was able to get a 100, as I did for the first

essay and felt I was not able to reach the same level.

My next essay was the literary analysis essay on “Born a Crime”. I did not know what a

literary analysis was and I had no idea and which approach to take for starting the paper. After

gaining a good understanding of the book, I decided to talk to Mrs. Brantley about the basic

concepts of a literary essay, I also independently read a few articles on how to write a literary

essay as well as a few examples of literary analysis to strengthen my understanding. After

working on the essay for more than a week, I turned in my working draft. I received a grade of

90 and felt angry angry of not being able to earn a better grade yet again. I made corrections
according to my professor’s feedback and added more to the essay after talking to my teachers

and peers. I submitted the final paper and received a grade of 100. I was so glad that I finally

made to the grade of 100 on a college level essay.

In conclusion, I consider my literary essay exemplary because I did not know what a

literary essay was and I had to prove to myself that I could earn a perfect grade for a college

level essay. For each draft, and revised draft, I had to work harder than for the previous ones. I

grew with every draft and my writing became better as the class progressed. I believe that my

literary essay is the best essay I have written due to the amount of work I put in it, and how I

polished it.
