successfully defended his PBA World Championship
title for a record 11th PBA major crown, continuing
to set new benchmarks of performance for the PBA
Tour’s most prestigious and challenging tourna-
ments.

“I didn’t have a clue what hap-
pened there because it was a pret-
ty good shot as far as I was con-
cerned,” said Prather. “It could
have been a turning point in the
match but there was still time to
get back on track. I decided after
that shot the best thing to do was
move a little further left and create
a little more angle to the pocket
and that turned out to be a good
adjustment.”

In his 11th season on tour, Belmonte broke a tie with PBA Hall of
Famers Earl Anthony and Pete Weber for most major titles, after
winning his 10th major in the PBA Tournament of Champions in
February. He had a chance to win his 11th major in the Players
Championship a week after the Tournament of Champions but was
defeated by fellow two-hander Anthony Simonsen in the title match
of that tournament.
Having been top qualifier for the finals of the Tournament of
Champions, Players Championship and the World Championship,
Belmonte also set a new mark for earning the top qualifier position
for the finals in three consecutive major tournaments in a season.
“I’m so overwhelmed right now that if I could express how I feel
I don’t know if anyone could understand me,” said Belmonte, who
also won his 21st career tour title. “To break a record held by two
of the greatest players of all time is just something I never thought
was possible when I first started on tour more than 10 years ago.
I’m proof that you can achieve your dreams.”
Belmonte got off to a fast start in the title match with strikes in
the first three frames, while Butturff, trying for his first major and
sixth career tour title, struggled until striking in the third frame.
Butturff ran into trouble again in the sixth frame when he missed a
seven pin but recovered to throw the last six strikes of the match to
eventually force Belmonte to strike on the first ball in the 10th and
then finish the frame with a spare. Belmonte doubled in the 10th to
seal the win.
“Jakob is a great player and I knew what he was capable of so for
him to come back from that missed spare really didn’t surprise me,”
Belmonte said. “He put together a clutch performance to the very
end.
“Going into the 10th I knew my ball had to be perfect going
through the pins and those were two of the best shots of my life,”
Belmonte added. “I can’t think of a better way to win this tourna-
ment.”
Belmonte also became the season’s first three-time winner having
also won the Chameleon Championship. He also extended his
record of career tour wins in WSOB competition to six.
The stepladder finals started with Butturff, who qualified fourth,
beating No. 5 qualifier BJ Moore of Greensburg, Pa., 236-183.
Moore, who was trying for his first PBA Tour title, finished fifth
which tied his best finish in a major when he also finished fifth in
the 2018 Tournament of Champions.
The 24-year-old Butturff then beat 10-time tour winner No. 3
qualifier Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa, 235-226, to advance to the
semifinal match where he beat part-time tour player and No. 2 qual-
ifier Matt McNiel of Minneapolis, 184-179, to advance to the title
match against Belmonte.
• The Bowl4life PBA Rookie Watch will lead to the 2019 PBA Rookie
of the Year earning a $2,500 bonus from Chuck Gardner’s Bowl4Life
Foundation while the foundation donates another $2,500 to a youth
bowler scholarship in the Rookie of the Year’s name. After four Go
Bowling! PBA Tour events, the top three rookies in PBA competition
points are: Jake Rollins (1,430), Patrick Hanrahan (1,365) and AJ Rice
(815).

DHC PBA JAPAN INVITATIONS
The PBA field for the 2019 DHC PBA Japan Invitational is set with
the additions of Kyle Troup, Sean Rash and Chris Barnes as team cap-
tain as invitees by the tournament sponsor. Also joining the internation-
al field of 16 will be PBA Japan Region champion Yuka Tsuchiya and a
Korea PBA player to be named later.
PBA members who had previously qualified for invitations based on
competition points are 2018 PBA Player of the Year Andrew Anderson,
Anthony Simonsen, EJ Tackett, Kris Prather, Stuart Williams, Jason
Belmonte, Marshall Kent, Bill O’Neill and Jakob Butturff. Defending
DHC Japan champion Dom Barrett also will return when the 2019 event
is held April 27-29 at Tokyo Port Bowl.
The international players will be joined by 16 Japanese bowlers who
will qualify during a pre-tournament qualifier a week ahead of the main
event. The tournament offers an estimated $35,000 first prize plus a PBA
Tour title. PBA’s official live streaming partner, FloBowling, will cover
the event in its entirety.

HACKENSACK, NJ – The North Jersey Scholarship
Travel Tournament [NJSTT] held its tenth and final
Singles event of the season at Bowler City. Of the
twenty-three entrants, twelve averaged better than
200+ for the four game set and there was a total of
forty-six “200s” rolled. Wayne Hills had a strangle-
hold on the field, capturing the first three places; jun-
ior Dylan Heinold enjoyed a fifty-six pin handicap
lead after three games, but his teammate, Tom
Luchetta, also a junior, fired 244 net, 294 gross to
overtake him and win the tournament by a scant nine
sticks; their freshman teammate Zach Koslosky fin-
ished third, eight pins further back.
Continuing the tradition inaugurated two years ago
after the tragic passing of Clarkstown North junior
Brandon Smith, the annual sportsmanship plaque in his
name was awarded this season to two recipients: Fair
Lawn senior Nick Greco and Hawthorne senior Hunter
Perry.

each day at the 2019 World
Bowling Junior Championships,
Junior Team USA's Mabel
Cummins became more comfort-
able on the 41-foot World Bowling
Montreal oil pattern.
The 16-year-old right-hander
averaged 208.3 over four days and
18 games (six games in singles,
doubles and team) at Plaza
Bowling Saint Maximin to finish
17th in the all-events standings
and advance to Masters match
play, which featured the top 24
girls and top 24 boys.
And that's when things fell into
place for Cummins, a team gold-
medalist at the 2018 World
Bowling Youth Championships.
In four matches between
Thursday and Friday, Cummins
bowled 10 additional games, aver-
aging more than 229.
She defeated Natalie Groll of
Germany, 2-0 (223-200, 194-190),
Iliana Salinas of Mexico, 2-0
(254-162, 231-222), and
Singapore's Lu Yi Quek, 2-1 (234-
256, 201-186, 221-214), before
losing to Korea's Jeong
Youngseon, 2-1 (277-196, 246-
255, 213-225) in the Masters
semifinals.
Cummins earned a bronze medal
for the performance, while Jeong
advances to Saturday's gold-medal
match, where she will face her
teammate, Hong Soree, a 2-1
semifinal winner over Norel
Nuevo of the Philippines (223-
235, 244-210, 222-201).
"I bowled a really great three-
game set, but I had some inoppor-
tune pin carry that ultimately hurt
me," said Cummins, a two-time
member of Junior Team USA.
"Overall, I'm really pleased with
how I did in the Masters event. It's
a big improvement from the World
Youth Championships last sum-
mer, where I lost my first match.
"I've been working a lot on my
match-play skills and being men-
tally tough in stressful situations,
and I think I really excelled at that
today."

Cummins will have one more
opportunity to conquer the

team's first gold medal of the inau-
gural World Junior
Championships, and it will
include a rematch with Jeong. The
two won't be alone, however,
since they'll be competing for the
doubles gold medal.
Jeong will be joined on the lanes
by Hong, while Peters will join
her Junior Team USA teammate.
Another difference will be that
the action at the World Junior
Championships now shifts from
Plaza Bowling Saint Maximin to a
special two-lane setup inside
Paris' Institut du Judo.
While the environment will be
different and the lane characteris-
tics they've experienced all week
will be irrelevant, Cummins and
Peters are versatile enough and
will have a solid game plan, and
some backup strategies, for the
final match.
"I'm 100 percent confident in
Kam's ability and my ability to
execute 10 really great shots
tomorrow, and we're really look-
ing forward to it," Cummins said.
