Report 30.10.

2018:

- The excel databank of multiaxial fatigue test results has been updated according to the
suggestions presented in the last meeting. My current task concerning the databank is to
include the loading of each paper (not just the results) which is to be done after the
corresponding case study is concluded. You’ll find the updated version attached to this
email.
- My goal from last meeting was to find the correct reference SN curve to base our
calculations on but in the process some interesting things were found:
o It has been definitively concluded that modelling the weld bead as a sharp notch is
acceptable and in fact counts towards the advantages of the TCD (Taylor, et al.,
2002)
o In (Susmel, et al., 2008) a procedure has been used to determine the L and σ0 of the
material. The procedure is shown in figure 1. Two different types of notches were
tested under both Mode I and Mode III loading and intersection point of the notches
for each type of loading was examined. It was concluded that the coordinates of the
intersection point in the stress-distance curve is (L, σ0 ), the L is different for each
loading type since the ΔKth is different and lastly, the fatigue strength of the material
was unchanged in both intersection points (as expected). This was done with
uniaxial loading. I was wondering if we can extend this procedure to multiaxial
loading and test it in our Khurshid model in which we model the notch sharply and
bluntly and examine the intersection point of the curve to verify the hypothesis and
verify our L value.
o For the use of the correct reference line I found only 1 paper addressing this issue
(Susmel, 2009). The paper investigates the use of Modified Wöhler Curve Method
(MWCM) with critical distance theory. The reference line used was the nominal
stress with the FAT class of butt weld as recommended in the IIW.
- For the FEM models I passed by the office of the secretary twice and couldn’t find her so I
sent an enquiry email but she hasn’t replied yet. I’ll pass by again tomorrow. In the
meantime I am done with the meshing of the second sample (Lotsberg) according to the
guidelines we used in Khurshid and will go on with the next one unless I find a way into the
secretary to have her sign my application and give it to the university for access to the
cluster.
