CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Mathematics is an important subject in the world. Many students struggle when it

comes to this subject because they think that it is boring and complicated. Without

realizing that mathematics can be seen and applied everywhere like in shopping,

travelling, in past times and at work. It can be distinguished through a certain situation

where problem solving is involved particularly applying the basic and/complex concepts

of math.

Solving mathematical problems is always an important aspect of mathematics in

teaching and in learning as stated by Liljedahl et al. in 2016. However, students' insights

on problem solving in mathematics become less significant because it is a difficult

subject for them, especially when some students cannot fully understand the concept or

the process. Students tend to find other ways for them to entirely comprehend the lesson

and that is where technologies with software applications came in because nowadays,

most schools and universities are already technology-based when it comes to teaching

and learning, particularly in the field of science and mathematics.

In Information Technology (IT), a software application is generally a program of a

gadget (mostly computers) that enable end users to perform classified tasks more

efficiently. It can be called an application or simply an app. It is widely used all over the

world and it is very significant nowadays especially for educational purposes.

2

In Tehran, Iran, Behzadi and his team in 2012 highlighted the use of application of

algebrator software for solving math problems and how does it affect the learnings of the

students. According to them, the utilization of the application is positively effective on

learning math compare to the traditional methods. The study fortifies the impression that

students can use software applications in learning or may be used as aid in problem

solving while self-studying.

In an article published in The Strait Times in 2016, most schools in Singapore utilize

technologies to aid students in their learnings. Educators from the schools stated that

students are more involved and more comfortable when technology is used in their

learning. The technological applications from the computers can also allow teachers to

track the students' understanding of concepts taught in class. Moreover, educators call the

students as "digital natives" and technologies with software applications help students

achieve future-ready competencies.

Koivisto in 2016 cited that the history of computers in education in Finland started

in the late 70s after many Finnish universities and companies acquired and made use of

mainframe computers. Computers that were utilized have educational softwares and it is

convenient for practicing basic computer programming. Some of the university students

who made use of computers in studying became teachers afterwards and tought the idea

of using computers in Finnish schools. However, most teachers did not see the essence of

utilizing computers in classrooms at that time.

According to Garcia (2016), the Department of Education (DepEd) recognizes the

key role of Information and Communications Technology or ICT in improving the state
3

of education. The internet can provide accessible and comprehensive education for

students with its capacity to hold infinite number of valuable resources and also with the

help of some educational applications that could guide students on their learning in

schools. Nevertheless, the Philippines lacks sufficient amount of resources where most

schools doesn't have any internet access yet and technologies such as laptops, desktop

computers and projectors that could support students and also teachers in teaching and

learning.

The researchers observed that most students in Baliwasan Senior High School,

Zamboanga City use technologies or computer softwares in learning. With that, the

researchers want to know how the students see if computer software apps are used in

solving problems in mathematics. The researchers chose the subject mathematics because

most students find it hard and they observed that the learning applications in some

technologies are mostly about mathematics that could help students solve or compute.

The researchers conducted this study in order to determine and identify the

advantages, disadvantages, challenges and coping mechanisms in utilizing software

applications in solving math problems.

Theoretical Framework

This research study is supported by the theory of Albert Bandura which was

developed in 1977 called the “Social Cognitive Theory” and is still active up to the

present. The theory explains the learning of people that asserts them from observing

others in their social environment. There are two key themes in this theory that mainly
4

support this study. First is modeling, it refers to learners observing others perform

actions in context. It means that learners can get new ideas, new information from what

they have observed. Before technology, students' access to models are limited, but now;

where technologies are very dominant, learners have all the access to models and teachers

can easily provide models to their students. Second is self-efficacy, it is the belief in one’s

own ability to complete tasks and reach goals. It is increased when students are able to

watch a model of a skill and then practice it themselves. For example, software

applications or programs with already downloaded avatars or recorded teachers that

model or show how to solve mathematical problems can definitely help students if they

don't have any idea in solving math problems where they were provided an opportunity to

perform and practice.

Furthermore, the theory of Lev Vygotsky called the Social Development Theory

which was published in 1962 also support this research study. The Social Development

Theory and Social Cognitive Theory have some similarities to each other. The Social

Development Theory states that social interaction plays an important role in the

development of learning and understanding of a certain concept which explains the

similarity of the two theories.

A taxonomy called the “Bloom's Taxonomy” which was named after Benjamin

Bloom in 1956, also supported this research study where it is used to classify educational

learning objectives into levels of complexity and specificity. Educators connected the

concept of Bloom's Taxonomy to digital tools/technologies and called it the "Digital

Blooms Taxonomy". According to Sneed (2016), the point of Digital Blooms Taxonomy
5

is to inform structors of how to use technology or digital tools to facilitate student

learning experiences and outcomes.

DepEd Order No. 78, s. 2010 talks about the guidelines on the implementation of

the DepEd Computerization Programs (DCP). It states that DepEd is ready towards the

transformation of education through DCP and it aims to provide public schools with

appropriate technologies that would enhance the teaching-learning process and confront

the challenges of the 21st century. The DepEd Computerization Program is basically

anchored in this research study because it talks about the usage of computer technologies

to enrich the teaching and learning process. The program legally mandates the utilization

of computers in school and computers have software applications that could technically

help students to enhance learning from a particular subject like mathematics.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the relevant literatures and studies which are associated to

the students' utilization of software applications in mathematics. A study of relevant

literature is an essential step to get a full picture of what has been done and said abroad

and in one’s own country with regard to the problem.

Related Literature

It has long been seen that mathematical problem solving is an important aspect of

mathematics, both in teaching and in learning (Liljedahl et al, 2016). Problem solving in

mathematics helps students develop their analytical thinking skills and also improve their

knowledge in problem solving. Teachers follow certain principles and strategies to teach

students how to solve problems and it may require mathematical or systematic

operations.

Christensen (2015) cited that students tend to have two issues: a lack of problem-

solving strategies and deficiencies in their basic math facts and number sense. Students

with these issues fall behind in their algebra coursework due to their lack of

understanding in the concepts and automaticity of math facts. With the help of Computer-

Assisted instructions, students can improve their understanding and knowledge of a skill

in the field of mathematics. Using math strategies assisted by the use of technology has
9

shown that it will have a positive learning experience by students at multiple grade levels

and varying levels of understanding.

Kumar in 2010 stated that the basic concepts and proofs of many mathematical

concepts involve difficult and abstract ideas that present a mountainous obstacle to many

students. Computer algebra systems or software applications for mathematics offer both

an opportunity and a challenge to present new approaches that assist students and

teachers to develop better understanding of the concepts. They can be used to change the

emphasis of learning and teaching of mathematical concepts away from techniques and

routine symbolic manipulation or in other words, manual computations towards higher

level cognitive skills that focus on concepts and problem solving. Moreover, Kumar

appended that the mathematics software has the ability to present graphical, algebraic and

numerical approaches to the learners in terms of problem solving and fundamental

concepts in math.

Lachner (2014) defined educational software applications as more than basic

instructional programs. It is increasingly sophisticated and prevalent in schools with free

access to the programs that is designed to help students and teachers in learning. Software

applications offer practical uses for students, such as word processing, database

management, and school schedule maintenance. Students who might not enjoy sitting in

class listening to a lecture or filling out worksheets may perk up at the thought of an

educational software designed to teach math using sound and graphics.

Teodor Rus, in his book entitled Computer-Based Problem Solving Process of 2015

cited that problem solving with computers become more demanding. Instead of focusing
10

on the problem when manual strategies are used to solve them, people are deflected by

the pursuit of utilizing programming tools when available. It is because that by using

technologies in calculating and computing can make things easier.

An article which was published in Grand Forks Herald in 2015 dictates that Thielges

(2015), a math teacher, stated that math applications has various advantages and

disadvantages. Thielges thinks that having a mathematical software applications could be

both a good and a bad thing depending on how students use it. He added that students can

get answers in different ways. However the bigger deal is the matter of knowing how to

get the answer.

It was mentioned by Li (2011) that computer information technology has been

widely applied in education and scientific research. Properly using computer technology

can effectively improve the teaching quality of the teachers. Moreover, computer

information technology could not only stimulate the students' study enthusiasm and

initiative, but aslo promote teaching idea transformation.

According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, they release position

statements that define a certain problem, issue, or need in relation to mathematics.

According to them it is beneficiary that teachers and students have regular access in

technologies that support and advance mathematical sense making, reasoning, problem

solving and communicating. Most teachers took advantage of the technologies so their

students increasingly develop their understanding and enliven their interest in

mathematics.
11

Related Studies

As cited by Minda and her co-researchers in 2015, that students considered the

Mathematics subject as a difficult one and in consequence, it kind of appears as a

stoppage in the learning process of the students. Some aspects of that subject has an

abstract presentation and students cannot visualize and interpret the results. According to

them, "A good way to visualize results of mathematical concepts and results is their

presentation in a graphical way; this is possible to be realized using different dedicated

software, but also by constructing virtual instruments. The use of these last tools is

motivated by the fact that the experience reveals the attractiveness of computers and

programming languages in education. This is amplified by the fact that programming

develops the ability of thinking and structural organizing of activities and actions, and

involves in our case the use of functions and relations in a logical sentence". The

researchers stated that there is a better way to fully understand and properly image the

results of mathematical concepts with the help of different dedicated software.

Abidin et al (2017) studied the challenges of integrating mobile technology into

mathematics instruction. It is said in their study that most teachers are concerned about

the improper use of mobile phones that could impact their students' mental well-being

and distract them from learning. Most teachers perceive mobile technologies to be

disruptive and seem reluctant to use them for teaching delivery. Additionally, the findings

of the study suggest that educators should infuse alternate technologies that fit better with

the schools' teaching and learning environment. This includes software applications that

can run on different gadgets ranging from desktop computers, laptops, tablets mobile

phones.
12

According to the study of Drigas and Pappas (2015), mobile and online learning

applications become more known year after year and are used today from millions of

students and educators in all over the world. Wireless mobile devices like smartphones,

PDAs (Personal Digital Assessment) and tablets, could be used to benefit students’

learning in or out of the classroom. The result of the case study of Drigas and Pappas

revealed that mobile and online applications can motivate students in learning and

making the field of mathematics more entertaining and interactive than the traditional

teaching practices.

These published studies will be used by the researchers to further explain the

perception of the students on the utilization of software application in solving

mathematical problems.
13

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter explains the specific procedures or techniques used to identify,

select, process and analyze information about the study. It allows the readers to critically

analyze the overall study.

Research Design

This research study used a qualitative research design, particularly a

phenomenological design since it is to describe and determine human activities through

description provided by respondents. Researchers will describe the perception of the

student in the utilization of software application in mathematics.

Phenomenological is the most appropriate to use in this study, as the essence of

phenomenological research study is to transform the lived experiences of the respondents

into textual experience.

CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS

The researchers gathered data from 15 students of Baliwasan Senior High School

Stand-Alone at Atty. Baban Road, San Jose, Zamboanga. All of the participants

successfully shared their opinions about the utilization of software application in

mathematics. The researchers used a face-to-face interview through the use of open ended

interview protocol. Their participation is what made this study possible.

Problem 1: determine the advantages of software application in solving

mathematical problems.

Table 2. The advantages software application in solving mathematical problems.

Question Responses

1. What are Participant 1 (12 STEM)

the
advantages if The advantage is ahm.. yung madali siya sa oras.
problems
(The advantage is it's easy in time. Like in Excel, you can easily put
using
the numbers and the answers are there, you don't have to solve
mathematical
18

software? manually.)
Participant 2 (12 HUMSS)
Syempre parang mas accurate siya pag.. pag paggamit yung
mathematical software kasi pag manual, may error kunwari katulad sa
quantitative research so kailangan mo ng SPSS, so pag ganun pag pag
errors when it comes to research, so advantage talaga may
mathematical software for mathematical problems.
(Of course it seems more accurate if you're using mathematical
software. Because if it is manual, there is an error, for instance in
quantitative research, you need SPSS and if you are solving it
manually, it's a bit difficult, and it's also hard to have errors when it
comes to research. So it is really advantageous when there is
mathematical software for mathematical problems.)
Participant 3 (12 HUMSS)
So, the advantage of mathematical software in solving
mathematical problem is that, it can easily provide the answer to your
problem.
(The advantage of mathematical software in solving mathematical
problem is, it can easily provide the answer to your problem.)
Participant 4(12 TVL)
The advantage of mathematical software, you can easily solve the
problem by using this ahh... example these gadgets like cellphone you
can use your cellphone by using a calculator.
(The advantage of mathematical software, you can easily solve the
problemby the gadgets like cellphone using calculator.)
Participant 5(12 TVL)
The advantages are easy to solve the problem.
Participant 6 (12 GAS)
So kung ano, kung yung pag uusapan natin is yung solving by
using mathematical software is ano oh uhmm magiging easy yung
problems
(So if we're talking about solving by using mathematical software, it
would be easier if you're solving using software about mathematical
problems.)
19

Participant 7 (12 GAS)

The advantages in using mathematical software in solving
mathematical problems is the accuracy of the answers, it can also help
you to solve more easily and more quickly and definitely save your
time from solving.
Participant 8 (11 STEM)
So yung advatages is yung, kapag gumamit ka ng mathematical
pagsolve nito dahil yung mathematical software is meron na siyang
software, as far as i know yung mathematical software is meron
problem solving at since 21st century learners na tayo ngayon, medyo
talamak na yung paggamit ng technologies
(So the advantages are if you use mathematical software in solving
mathematical problems, it would be easier to solve because
mathematical software has symbols wherein you can easily distinguish
and those symbols contain or describe problem solving. And since
we’re already in the 21st century, the use of technologies are now non-
stagnant.)
Participant 9 (11 AMB)
Aahm well the advantages is na mas easier siya other than
computing hand by hand kasi kapag kuan kasi ang mathematical
software kaagad binigigay agad ang answer without you calculating
anything or something but kaagad siya mag bigay ng answer sayo
(Well the advantages are it is easier than computing hand by hand,
because mathematical software immediately provides the answer
without you calculating anything or something. It easily gives the
answer to you and you don't have to experience difficulty anymore,
that's the main advantage of it.)
Participant 10 (11 HUMSS)
Its advantages it is easier when you are using mathematical
software.
Participant 11 (11 HUMSS)
The advantages of mathematical software are that we can easily
solve mathematical problem.
20

Participant 12 (11 TVL)

The advantage of using mathematical is too easily to define the
different distribution.
Participant 13 (11 TVL)
Using calculator or cellphone, it can help us solve the problems ng
madali.
(It can help us solve the problems easily by using calculator or
cellphone.)
Participant 14 (11 GAS)
I think the advantages using mathematical software while solving a
mathematical problems is just easy because you can just picture it or
write the given of the problems and technically mathematical software
automatically solve the problem.
Participant 15 (11 GAS)
It will lessen my burdensome in solving mathematical problems.

Table 2 shows the responses of the participants on the advantages of using

mathematical software in solving mathematical problems. Almost all answers are the

same, wherein for them the advantage of using mathematical software in solving

mathematical problem is that, it can easily give the answer and less time to consume in

solving. It also provides the accurate answer.

Problem 2: determine the disadvantages of software application in solving

mathematical problems.
21

Table 3. The disadvantages of software application in solving mathematical

problems.

Question Responses

2. What are Participant 1 (12 STEM)

the Ahh ano kasi eh, yung disadvantage niya is pag example sira yung

if you solve (The disadvantage of it is, for example your computer malfunctioned,
you'll be late in time.)
mathematical
problems Participant 2 (12 HUMSS)

using Ahm disadvantages, siguro kasi yung availability nung nung

mathematical sa laptop and then wala ka namang laptop so yun young disadvantages
software? so pag, so pag ganun I… I think yun yung disadvantages in some pag
ginamit mo yung mathematical software nayun.
(The disadvantage is the availability of mathematical software, if the
software is found in laptop and you don't have any laptops, then I think
that is the disadvantage.)
Participant 3 (12 HUMSS)
The disadvantages of mathematical software is that, it will not
provide the solution, it will just give right away the answer you must
understand it. Also the disadvantages is not all students know how to
use it and not all students can provide or can afford gadgets.
Participant 4 (12 TVL)
You can enhance yourself by using mathematical software and you
don't know what the process of this solution is.
Participant 5 (12 TVL)
The disadvantages are hard to find the answer.
Participant 6 (12 GAS)
na bawal maggamit ng ano oh kailangan by yung pagsolve is ano
(There are some teachers who are saying that the use of computer
software or anything except calculator is prohibited.)
22

Participant 7 (12 GAS)

The disadvantages in using mathematical software in solving
mathematical problem is that you will lose the knowledge about the
process of solving wherein you can only have it on solving it manually.
Participant 8 (11 STEM)
mathematical software is that kapag kapag wala kaseng resources, yung
(The disadvantages in solving mathematical problems using
mathematical softwares are that there is a lack of resources and also
you will have difficulties in solving mathematical problems if you don't
have enough knowledge in utilizing mathematical softwares.)
Participant 9 (11 ABM)
Ahm disadvantages for students parang magiging kampante sila na
hindi nila for example malay mo one day na kailangan nila hand by
mathematical software dun sila mahihirapan.
(The disadvantage is that students will become overconfident and for
example one day they will have to compute hand by hand and
mathematical software is prohibited, they will have a hard time in
solving.)
Participant 10 (11 HUMSS)
You are depending on the software and you are not exerting too
much effort in solving mathematical problems.
Participant 11 (11 HUMSS)
They don’t provide solutions.
Participant 12 (11 TVL)
The disadvantage of using mathematical application is when you use
it you need to follow the instruction and how to use the formula.
Participant 13 (11 TVL)
Pwede masagot ang tanong na maaring di tama ang sagot like the
photomath application.
23

(The answers have chances that it is wrong like the photomath

application.)
Participant 14 (11 GAS)
The disadvantages of this using mathematical software are it will
become habits to solve problems.
Participant 15 (11 GAS)
Sometimes the answers are wrong and lack of solutions.

Table 3 talks about the responses of the participants about the disadvantages of

utilizing mathematical software in solving mathematical problems. The participants

mentioned some disadvantages like the lack of availability of software and gadgets,

students will be more dependent on the software, it will lessen the knowledge of the

students, some applications don’t give solutions, and there is a chance that it will give

wrong answer.

Problem 3: identify the challenges and coping mechanisms in the utilization of the

computer-aided problem solving.

Table 4. Computer-aided computation or manual computation.

Question Responses

3. Would you Participant 1 (12 STEM)

prefer to solve
mathematical Ako kasi ah.. I prefer computer ano yun.. computer aided
problem using computations.
aided
(For me, I prefer computer-aided computations, because I don't know
computation
how to solve manually that's why I am more comfortable in computer
or manual
softwares.)
computation?
Why? Participant 2 (12 HUMSS)
24

Mas prefer ko siguro yung ano computer -aided computation. Kasi

error pag manual.
(I maybe prefer to computer-aided computation. Because if it is
manual, there is a higher possibility that you will have an error
especially when you're not really good in math.)
Participant 3 (12 HUMSS)
For me, although computer aided can provide the correct answer, I
am more prefer to use manual because in manual computation it can
enhance my skill in solving mathematical problems and it can add
more knowledge, and I know how I get my answer.
Participant 4 (12 TVL)
I would prefer myself by using manual computation it’s because it
enhance my knowledge and ability using this manual computation.
Participant 5 (12 TVL)
I use manual computation because I love the subject mathematics
so that is easy to me to solve the problem.
Participant 6 (12 GAS)
Mas maganda yung manual computation kase ano kase kapag
(Manual computation is more appropriate, because if you're
computing manually, you will have additional knowledge on how did
you compute or derive the solution in comparison to the applications.)
Participant 7 (12 GAS)
For me, using the computer-aided computation or manual
computation in solving mathematical problem will be depend on the
situation, if you are in a hurry in solving a problem and the solution
are not necessary it us best for you to use computer-aided computation
but when you are required of having a process or the solution I suggest
that you should use a manual one for you to be able to explain how
you come up with your correct answer.
Participant 8 (11 STEM)

(In solving mathematical problems, it would be easier if a computer-
aided is utilized because it can fasten and it has everything that you
need.)
Participant 9 (11 ABM)
Honestly aided computation kasi paminsan nahihirapan din ako
kapag manual kaso nakakatulong para sakin kapag aided computation
talaga siya.
(Honestly, computer-aided computation, because sometimes I
experience difficulties in solving manually so it can really help me
with that.)
Participant 10 (11 HUMSS)
I prefer using manual computation because even though my answer
is not correct, still I tried my best in solving it.
Participant 11 (11 HUMSS)
I prefer computer-aided solutions because if you use computer
aided solutions you don’t have to give solutions you just give the
answer.
Participant 12 (11 TVL)
I’m totally not, because on solving mathematical problems you
need to know and you need to analyze critically the given situations.
Participant 13 (11 TVL)
Yes, because may iba kasing question on problem solving difficult
to answer
(Yes, because there are questions in problem solving that are difficult
to answer.)
Participant 14 (11 GAS)
No, because it will become a habit while solving a problems. I
prefer using scientific calculator.
Participant 15 (11 GAS)
I prefer manual computation, because it will help us to have
further ideas on how to solve the mathematical problems.
26

Table 4 shows the participants' choice on where they prefer in solving

mathematical problems, whether it is manually or via computer-aided solutions. Some

participants prefer computer-aided solutions because it is easier to solve with the use of it

and the participants also dictate that it will be very useful for the students who are not

good in mathematics. However, most participants prefer in using manual computation

because according to them, it can enhance the skill of the students in solving

mathematical problems and it can add the knowledge of the students in regards to

problem solving.

in your Oo, I prefer na meron kasi kasi yung sa SPSS talaga pag pag na, so
class?
(Yes, because when you reach in quantitative research, you really need
SPSS so that your results in your research will be very accurate.)
Participant 3 (12 HUMSS)
Yes, it is encouraged if we will use graphing application.
Participant 4 (12 TVL)
No, it’s because there is a disadvantage in using these gadgets like the
students will not enhance his ability.
27

Participant 5 (12 TVL)

It depends to the student if they like this strategy.
Participant 6 (12 GAS)
(Maybe, but it needs to have a proper explanation on how will it be
utilized.)

Participant 7(12 GAS)

No, because using a computer-aided solutions also have their
disadvantages if you use it in your class especially when you are taking
or answering a quiz/exam it just teaching to be lazy.
Participant 8 (11 STEM)
(Yes, because when my teachers give me assignments, I answer those in
my house where I search in google to find some help because I am not
good in the class.)
Participant 9 (11 ABM)
Ah encourage siya dito kasi sa teacher namin sa stats in in SPSS para
mas easier kami maka compute so inencourge niya kame na, yes
inencourage niya din kami na mag manual at the same time parang
(Our statistics teacher encourage us to use computer software
particularly SPSS, so that it will be easier to compute. He also
encourages us to do manual computation at the same time.)
Participant 10 (11 HUMSS)
No, not all have the access in using modern technologies.
Participant 11 (11 HUMSS)
Yes in a manner that they are suggesting us that we used computer-
aided solutions like photomath, etc.
28

Participant 12 (11 TVL)

Not all the time, teaching style of our teacher is all about solving
without using applications.
Participant 13 (11 TVL)
Yes, to solve the difficult question.

Participant 14 (11 GAS)

No because our teacher are not encouraged us to use a computer-aided
solutions because our teacher want us to be independent on our answers
and not to be depends using mathematical software.
Participant 15 (11 GAS)
No, we're just using calculator.

Table 5 presents that some teachers encourage their students to use mathematical

software but they only encourage it if it is needed and if students can’t compute it

manually. According to other participants, their teacher doesn’t encourage them because

they will become dependent to it.

Table 6. Computer-aided solutions should be encouraged.

solutions
(Yes, because the computer-aided seems to encourage you to study the
should be
lessons in mathematics.)
encouraged?
Why? Participant 2(12 HUMSS)
29

necessary so when pag pag ano pag pag research lang talaga kaya ‘di
solution para sa computation or hindi.
(It depends, because for us HUMSS students, it is unnecessary, when it
comes to research only. So I don't know if it is necessary to encourage
it or not.)
Participant 3 (12 HUMSS)
No, because students will become more dependent to the
applications.
Participant 4 (12 TVL)
No, because students will become more dependent to the
applications.
Participant 5 (12 TVL)
Encouraged to the other because easy to used.
Participant 6 (12 GAS)
(Yes it can, maybe if the process or the solution to your problem is
well-explained, then it is good.)
Participant 7 (12 GAS)
Somehow, it may but it’s depend with the situation it can be used
during the lesson or discussion but it should be prohibited during the
exam.
Participant 8 (11 STEM)
(Yes of course, because nowadays wherein the life of humans is
already technology-based, we need to know this kind of stuffs so that
we don't have to be ignorant and we can easily gather information and
adapt to the society easily.)
Participant 9 (11 ABM)
30

Ahmm.. maybe, well siguro,or yes kasi kapag marami kasi ngayon
estudyante nahihirapan kapag sa solving especially math so siguro
kapag i-kuan iencourage siya sa lahat its easier for everyone and
(Yes or maybe, because there are many students who experience
difficulties in solving especially in math, so maybe if it was encouraged
to all, it is easier for everyone mostly to the students who find
mathematics difficult.)

Participant 10 (11HUMSS)
Partly yes, because it is advantageous in the convenient way, partly
no because computer-aided solutions makes us rely on the technology.
Participant 11 (11HUMSS)
In some instances, yes, because computer-aided solutions it makes
the life of students easier, especially of those who doesn’t excel in
mathematics.
Participant 12 (11 TVL)
Yes! Because it is important, not at all the time we can use
calculator for solving mathematical problems.
Participant 13 (11 TVL)
Yes, because we can get idea or solution in computer to compute the
difficult question or solution
Participant 14 (11 GAS)
No because the students will not learn on how to proper solving a
problems.
Participant 15 (11 GAS)
It should not be encouraged because students will just going to
depend on it.

Table 6 shows the opinions of the participants if they think that computer-aided

solutions should be encouraged in the class. Some students agree to it because it is

31

beneficial to the students who don’t like math, it will be more easy for them to solve.

Some students disagree because students will not learn, they will be dependent to it.

(Yes, so that they will easily solve in math if manual computation to them
in the class,
is hard.)
can each
student be Participant 2 (12 HUMSS)
able to
utilize it?
Why? sa quanti, so siguro pag sa ibang strand stem like you pwede ma uutilize
siya kasi yun yung core diba so, yun.
(We don't have math right now only in quantitative research and we're
done with that, so maybe in the other strands like STEM, it is possible
that it will be utilized because math is the core subject.)
Participant 3 (12 HUMSS)
No, because not everyone have computer, and not everyone know
how to use it.
Participant 4 (12 TVL)
Yes, but there is kwan oh ah, disadvantage the disadvantage is they are
depending their answer on that stupid computer.
(Yes, but there is a disadvantage; they are depending their answer on
that stupid computer.)
Participant 5 (12 TVL)
Depends to the students if they how to used or they want to used it.
Participant 6 (12 GAS)

ganyang apps kailangan yung mag mag ano sila ng own way nila kung
papano magsolve ganun.
(For me, if they have applications, they really need to do their own way
in solving.)
Participant 7 (12 GAS)
Maybe, it would depend with the ability of a teacher to how she/he
can help them.
Participant 8 (11 STEM)
Opo kase... So kailangan.. so matutunan to ng mga estudyante sa
(Yes, the students will learn how to utilize the softwares with help of the
teachers. The teachers can teach the students inside the computer lab,
the students can finally know how to use mathematical software in
solving mathematical problems.)
Participant 9 (11 ABBM)
Dipende for example, ah one student yung for example, kapag yung
aided, aided ah, yung computer-aided laptop or some sort na wala man
sila laptop siguro mahihirapan sila but kapag meron naman ding
estudyante namang yun meron naman siyang computer-aided siguro ma
uutilize talaga pero siguro everyone can use it kapag mern silang laptop
or hinidi, or kung wala man pwede sila makahiram at alam nila kung
anong gawin.
(It depends, for example, if students don't have any computer-aided
laptop so they will find it difficult but if they have, they can really utilize
it. But maybe everyone can utilize it if all of them have laptops and if
they don't, they will just have to borrow and know what to do.)
Participant 10 (11 HUMSS)
They can but if they have the access to it.
Participant 11 (11 HUMSS)
Yes, students use it because they think that computer-aided solutions
are easy to use.
Participant 12 ( 11 TVL)
33

Maybe yes! Because some of my classmates are they do not know.

Participant 13 (11 TVL)
Yes, we can utilize it by getting idea example and any formula by its
solution and etc.
Participant 14 (11 GAS)
It depends on a students if she or he will be utilize it
Participant 15 (11GAS)
No, because some of the students doesn't have cellphones or any
technologies.

Table 7 talks about the utilization of the computer and if each of the students can

utilize it. Other participants agree in utilizing it because it is for their own good, while

others say it depends to the situation because some students don’t have the access, don ’t

have gadgets and don’t know how to use it properly.

solving
allowed? Ah yah ahm meron kasi pag computer technology ba so may
aside from that software talaga so pag pag ano ahm, oo may change,
may changes talaga parang in sa advantages parang mas magiging
34

(Yah, there is a tendency that you will be lose your attention from that
software, and focus on the applications that the computer is providing
aside from that particular mathematical software. Yes there is a
change, it is more modernize compared from the past where the
problems should really need to solve manually and now it can be
computerized.)
Participant 3 (12 HUMSS)
Yes, they will be more dependent to the software. They will be
lazier in understanding the solution, and the process of the problem.
Participant 4 (12 TVL)
Yes, once you ah use the computer you will not able to enhance
yourself by using your mental thinking such as solving manual
computation.
Participant 5 (12 TVL)
No changes because they are just hoping.
Participant 6 (12 GAS)
Meron, ano kase ano oh uhmm ako, since high school hanggang
utak or sarili mong mga kamay
(There is a change, when I was in high school until now, I use
mathematical softwares so when I have assignments, I tend to use
softwares but it is better if you really know how to solve with the use of
your brain and hands.)
Participant 7 (12 GAS)
Yes, because using a computer-aided computation can teach student
to be lazy and they will have less understanding/knowledge in solving
mathematical problems manually.
Participant 8 (11 STEM)
35

At mapapabilis ang pagsolve ng mathematical problems.

(Of course, if we solve problems manually, we utilize papers. With that
we can lessen the cutting of trees and it can hasten the process of
solving mathematical problems.)
Participant 9 (11 ABM)
natin kailangan i-manual mas madali to,tapos kapah kailangan nila
manual dun na sila mahihirapan.
(When it is computer-aided, they immediately compute the answer
without knowing the the process. And when they have to solve
manually, they will find it difficult.)
Participant 10 (11 HUMSS)
Of course, because it is much easier and the results would be
accurate.
Participant 11 (11 HUMSS)
Yes, in a way that the students are lazy to solve a problem.
Participant 12 (11 TVL)
Yes because sa pag gamit ng mga application di dapat all the time
(Yes, because you don't need to rely all the time from that application,
you should know how to answer without utilizing an application.)
Participant 13 (11 TVL)
Yes, because in computer, dito na natin makukuha ang mga sagot na
dapat nating kunin, so that there will be a change for the students
(Yes, because we can gather all the answers we need through
computers. So that there will be a change for the students.)
Participant 14 (11 GAS)
Yes, as I said again it will become a habit of the students and they
just depend using it.
Participant 15 (11 GAS)
36

Yes there will be a change in students, because there is a possibility

that they will always depend on it in answering mathematical problems
and they don't know how to solve it manually.

Table 8 shows the change in the way students study mathematics with the use of

mathematical software. According to the participants, students will be lazier, students will

be more dependent on the software and may lose their knowledge in terms of the solving

process. In addition, from the opinions of other participants, it is also depending on how

the students use the software and how they will manage it.

Table 9. The possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be utilized.

computer-
will utilize the software, if it is right way or the wrong way.)

solutions Participant 2 (12 HUMSS)
will be
ilaw, pag walang internet connection yah, so hinid mo siya magagamit so
computer talaga pag computer-aided solution and gagamitin.
(The problem is maybe in the computer itself; you cannot use it without
electricity and without internet connection. And computers can add the
payment of the electricity in school but the school will be more advanced
if they keep on utilizing computers.)
Participant 3(12 HUMSS)
Since application can provide the answer without solutions the
37

students cannot catch up or don't have the idea on why does the computer
come up with that answer.

Participant 4 (12 TVL)

The students will become lazy.
Participant 5 (12 TVL)
Its possible because if blackout? How to proceed the lesson?
Participant 6 (12 GAS)
Yung mga yung magiging problema kasi kapag ano, what if kung
(The possible problem is if the teacher said that it is prohibited to use
some applications in solving, so the students will have a hard time
computing because they are already used in utilizing computer
softwares/applications.)
Participant 7 (12 GAS)
The possible problem that you may encounter in using computer-aided
solutions will be utilized in the class is when you will have a quiz
wherein you are not allowed to use any devices it is difficult for you to
answer in manually.
Participant 8 (11 STEM)
mathematical software, kapag blackout di natin to magagamit.
Electricity, kapag kulang yung electricity di tayo makagamit ng laptop o
computer so hindi tayo makasolve ng mathematical problems using
mathematical software, so yun nga yung problema natin.
(If we use computers and then it is blackout, we cannot be able to utilize
it. If the electricity is not enough, then we cannot use laptop or computer
so we cannot solve mathematical problems using mathematical
sof)twares.)
Participant 9 (11 ABM)
Problems, maybe mga software mga defaults mga virus ganyan but
siguro mga konti, konti lang man din ang problems mostly in computer-
aided kasi, kasi ngayon modernize na tayo mostly kuan na tayo
technology na tayo so, so siguro konti lang ang problems at mauutilize
38

parin kahit may problema ma fifix padin.

(Problems, maybe the software that has defaults or viruses. But maybe
there are only few problems because we are already modernized and
mostly we're under technologies so we can really utilize the softwares
and if there are problems, it can easily be fixed.)
Participant 10 (11 HUMSS)
The students will rely everything in the computer.
Participant 11 (11 HUMSS)
I think students will depend more on computer-aided solutions instead
of manual computations.
Participant 12 (11 TVL)
(It will be easeir to resolve mathematical problems.)
Participant 13 (11 TVL)
(There are many students, the space is not enough if the computers are
already be utilized.)
Participant 14 (11 GAS)
The students will become lazier and stop working hard to solve a
problem in mathematics.
Participant 15 (11 GAS)
Students will be more dependent in using mathematical software, lack
of ideas in solving mathematical problems.

With the use of computer-aided solutions, table 9 shows the possible problems if

it will be utilized; students will become lazy, software may not give or provide the correct

answer and solutions, computers may have defaults and viruses, the accesibility and
39

availability of the technological softwares and students may encounter difficulties in

comprehending the answer.

Table 10. The addresses to the problems.

Question Responses

9. What Participant 1 (12 STEM)

will you do
to address Syempre by ano example by learning ahh no, by searching google on
these how the proper way of solving mathematics problem.
problems?
(Of course by searching google on how to properly solve mathematical
problems.)
Participant 2 (12 HUMSS)
What will I do? Hmmmm..so, so ahm kung, kung sa ibang school
mas madali lang nilang masolusyonan yan like private schools, so
(What will I do? If other schools can easily solve that problem like
private schools because they are financially stable. While us, if we add
another sources that could increase the bill of the electricity in our
school, then it is just another burden. So if you find any solution to your
problem, just contribute the solution, don't add up the problem.)
Participant 3 (12 HUMSS)
It is ok to use mathematical software/application to help the students,
the answer that was provided will serve as the guide to the students, they
will solve manually for them to know the process and for them to
enhance their skills in mathematics.
Participant 4 (12 TVL)
Do not depend on the computer all the time because there is a book to
study and to give you the proper way of solving or the proper ahh... to
give you a solution to your problem.
40

Participant 5 (12 TVL)

Don’t use computer-aided use your ability to solve without computer
aided to test our skills in mathematics.
Participant 6 (12 GAS)
(For me, maybe it is better if teachers will give the students the will on
where the students prefer to solve but it is much better if there are no
apps in solving and you will solve it yourself because you will learn
from it using your own ideas without the help of other apps.)
Participant 7 (12 GAS)
To address those problems I would take an exam then see if software
would have any significance.
Participant 8 (11 STEM)
yun yung electricity particularly blackout.
(So with the use of social media, we all know that one way to inform
people is through social media. By using social media, we can express
our insights and problems in relation to the computer-aided solutions
and that is the electricity particularly the blackout.)
Participant 9 (11 ABM)
Well, siguro I guguide yung mga students or in school na nahihirapan
i-utilize siya or kapag may mga defaults man or viruses kailangan
(Well, maybe students should be guided in school if they find it hard to
utilize or if there are any defaults or viruses, it needs to be repaired.)
Participant 10 (11 HUMSS)
I think students should stop or lessen the use of computer softwares
so that they won’t rely on it always.
41

Participant 11 (11 HUMSS)

Instead of always using computer-aided solving why not use manual
computation in solving problems so that students will not get lazy when
it comes to solving problems.

Participant 12 (11 TVL)

We should learn base on our own knowledge, experiences and
explore.
Participant 13 (11 TVL)
(For me, each student can use computer or applications for the solutions
that they will have to answer.)
Participant 14 (11 GAS)
Be responsible on solving a problems without using a computer aided
solutions. Please prefer use a scientific calculator
Participant 15 (11 GAS)
I'll encourage my co-students to just solve mathematical problems
manually, because it will give us a better benefit.

Table 10 shows how students address this problem. Some participants responded

that computer-aided may not be a good solution to the student because there are many

bad effects that the students can get from it. So the participants suggested to lessen the

use of computer-aided computations or just use manual computations in solving.

General Themes on the Perception of the Students in the Utilization of Software

Application in Solving Mathematical Problems.

42

Themes were distinguished by categorizing and highlight insights about their

perception in utilizing the software application in solving mathematical problems. Similar

comments and insights were grouped together for further review. From a convergence of

these clusters of meaning, the following themes emerged:

 The advantages of software application in solving mathematical problems

 The disadvantages of software application in solving mathematical problems
 The challenges and coping mechanisms in the utilization of the computer-
aided problem solving

Theme 1: Advantages of software application in solving mathematical problem.

All participants clearly stated that using software application in solving

mathematical problems can help them especially if there is a time limit, it can easily give

the answer to the problem that was given and it can also give the accurate answer.

Participant 7 based her answer from her experiences and observations in using

software applications. The participant answered directly and did not discussed more

about it.

“The advantages in using mathematical software in solving mathematical

problems are the accuracy of the answers, it can also help you to solve more easily and

more quickly and definitely save your time from solving.”

Furthermore, Participant 8 said in his answer that we’re already in the 21st century

so the usage of technologies in learning is common nowadays. Meaning,

Teodor Rus (2015) cited in his book that people are deflected by the pursuit of

utilizing programming tools when available because it makes things easier in computing

and solving.
43

Theme 2: Disadvantages of software application in solving mathematical problems.

Each participant has stated their opinions about the use of software application in

solving mathematical problems; it can sometimes commit errors, some doesn’t provide

solutions, and it brings bad effects to the student.

Participant 7 stated her own opinion about the disadvantage of the software

application based on her observations.

“The disadvantages in using mathematical software in solving mathematical

problem is that you will lose the knowledge about the process of solving wherein you can

only have it on solving it manually.”

According to a math teacher named Thielges (2015), that students can get

answers in different ways. However the bigger deal is the matter of knowing how to get

the answer.

Theme 3: The challenges and coping mechanisms in the utilization of the computer-

aided problem solving.

This theme contains 7 sub themes which are: (a) Computer-aided computation or

manual computation, (b) Encouragement of computer-aided solutions in the class, (c)

Computer-aided solutions should be encouraged, (d) Utilization of computer-aided

solution in by students, (e) The change in the way students study mathematics, (f) The

possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be utilized, and (g) The addresses to
44

the problems. Each participant stated their opinions from their experiences and

observations.

Participants stated where they are more comfortable when it comes in solving

mathematical problems, some are comfortable in solving mathematics problem with the

use of software application especially to those who find it difficult in solving, while some

are more comfortable in solving manually because according to them it can enhance their

skill in solving and it can add knowledge prior to solving problems in math. Participants

also stated the way the software applications encouraged to them, some answered it is

encouraged when it is needed but some answered that it is not encouraged to them by

their teacher. Approximately all participants disagreed about the utilization of the

computer because it will bring bad effect to the students like the students will become

lazier and dependent on the software, students may encounter difficulties in

comprehending the problem, students who are not familiar with the software will find it

difficult in using, and some students don’t have the applications. Participants also stated

their opinion on how they will address this problem and approximately all participants

find a better solution; is to use manual computation so that students will be independent

and it will enhance their skills in solving.

Abidin et al in 2017 stated that teachers are concerned about the improper use of

technologies or mobile phones and mostly of them perceive technologies to be disruptive

and reluctant to use in teaching delivery.

45

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusion

This study has illustrated the perception of 15 senior high school students from

Baliwasan Senior High School Stand Alone through a phenomenological approach. The

integral themes that emerged are: (a) advantages of software application in solving

mathematics problems, (b) disadvantages of software application in solving mathematics

problem, and (c) challenges and coping mechanisms in the utilization of the computer-

aided problem solving. Below are the conclusion based on the findings of the study.

1. The advantages of using a software application in solving mathematical problems

is that it can help the students to easily solve or compute the given problem for

them to save more time in doing other activities and it also provides the accurate

answer to the problem. Additionally, a respondent stated that today’s society are

now modernized and students mostly use technology in learning so it is better to

use applications or computer programs to fit in the society.

46

2. The disadvantages of using software applications in solving mathematical

problems is that students will not have the knowledge in knowing the process or

the operations used in solving because most software applications does not

provide solutions and directly give the answers and students tends to become

dependent in using software programs. Furthermore, some applications commit

errors so sometimes it does not give the correct or the accurate answer.

3. The challenges in the utilization of computer-aided problem solving or the use of

computer software application is first, students will have a hard time in choosing

whether they will use a manual computations or computer-aided computations

because if they will solve problems using applications, they can solve it easily but

they don’t know the process or how it has been done and they cannot enhance

their problem solving skills. Second, some learners doesn’t have the access in

solving using applications because there is a lack of knowledge in utilizing the

software applications properly plus some students don’t have the gadgets or the

applications. Third, some teachers sometimes does not authorized students in

using such applications. Lastly, students will become lazy because they only rely

on the software and may encounter difficulties in comprehending the problem.

With all of the challenges mentioned, the respondents suggested some things to do

to cope with those challenges or problems, the participants mainly suggest that

just limit the use of software applications when it comes to solving mathematical

problems or just solve it manually because what matters in mathematics is the

process, not mainly the answer.

Recommendations

For a more definite and comprehensive study, the researchers recommends the

following:

For the Principal

The principal should provide a crafting prorgams just like mathematics quiz bee or

mathematics competition that involve the utilization of software applications. The

principal advise can open the computer lab to all students so that all students can

experience learning using computer programs.

For the Teachers

Teachers must enhance their teaching strategies and also authorize students to use

software applications when it is needed. Teachers must teach students the proper way of

using technologies in learning and of course the fundamentals of solving math problems.

For the Parents

Parents should care and control their children, show more interest and concern in

the academic works of their children. Additionally, parents should allow and provide their

children in utilizing technologies.

For the Students

Students shall develop their skills in using software applications properly but

they should not forget to know the basics in computing or solving through uisng manual

computation.

APPENDIX E: DOCUMENTATION
59

APPENDIX F: TRANSCRIPTION

Participant 1 (12 STEM)

1. What are advantages if you solve

mathematical problems using

mathematical software?

 The advantage is ahm… yung madali siya sa oras.
(The advantage is it's easy in time. Like in Excel, you can easily put the
numbers and the answers are there, you don't have to solve manually.)
60

2. What are disadvantages if you solve mathematical problems using

mathematical software?
 Ahh ano kasi eh, yung disadvantage niya is pag example sira yung computer
mo, matatagalan ka talaga sa oras.
(The disadvantage of it is, for example your computer malfunctioned, you'll be
late in time.)

3. Would you prefer to solve mathematical problem using computer aided

computation or manual computation? Why?

 Ako kasi ah… I prefer computer ano yun… computer aided computations. Kasi
‘di kasi marunong sa manual kasi yun kaya ano mas comfortable ako sa
computer softwares.
(For me, I prefer computer-aided computations, because I don't know how to
solve manually that's why I am more comfortable in computer softwares.)

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

 Yeah. Using excel and SPSS.
5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?
 Ahm yes, kasi ano kasi yung computer- aided parang it encourage you to
pagaralan mo yung mga aralin sa mathematics.
(Yes, because the computer-aided seems to encourage you to study the lessons
in mathematics.)

6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

 Ahm, oo para madali silang makasolve sa math, if nahihirapan sila mag
manual.
(Yes, so that they will easily solve in math if they manual computation to them
is hard.)

7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

(It depends to the student, for example they were encouraged in computer-
aided they will solve math problems easier.)

8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

61

(Maybe the students will become lazy and we don't the way the students will
utilize the software, if it is right way or the wrong way.)

9. What will you do to address this problems?

 Syempre by ano example by learning ahh no, by searching google on how the
proper way of solving mathematics problem.
(Of course by searching google on how to properly solve mathematical
problems.)

Participant 2 (11 HUMSS)

1. What are advantages if you solve mathematical problems using mathematical

software?

 Syempre parang mas accurate siya pag… pag paggamit yung mathematical
software kasi pag manual, may error kunwari katulad sa quantitative research
so kailangan mo ng SPSS, so pag ganun pag pag mina-manual mo siya medyo
mahirap tsaka mahirap magkaroon ng errors when it comes to research, so
advantage talaga may mathematical software for mathematical problems.
(Of course it seems more accurate if you're using mathematical software.
Because if it is manual, there is an error, for instance in quantitative research,
you need SPSS and if you are solving it manually, it's a bit difficult, and it's
also hard to have errors when it comes to research. So it is really
advantageous when there is mathematical software for mathematical
problems.)

2. What are disadvantages if you solve mathematical problems using

mathematical software?
 Ahm disadvantages, siguro kasi yung availability nung nung mathematical
software kung kung available lang yung software nayun sa laptop and then
wala ka namang laptop so yun young disadvantages so pag, so pag ganun I… I
think yun yung disadvantages in some pag ginamit mo yung mathematical
software nayun.
62

(The disadvantage is the availability of mathematical softwares, if the

software is found in laptop and you don't have any laptops, then I think that is
the disadvantage.)

3. Would you prefer to solve mathematical problem using computer aided

computation or manual computation? Why?

 Mas prefer ko siguro yung ano computer -aided computation. Kasi pag
manual.
(I maybe prefer to computer-aided computation. Because if it is manual, there
is a higher possibility that you will have an error especially when you're not
really good in math.)

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

(Yes, because when you reach in quantitative research, you really need SPSS
so that your results in your research will be very accurate.)

5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?

computation or hindi.
(It depends, because for us HUMSS students, it is unnecessary, when it comes
to research only. So i don't know if it is necessary to encourage it or not.)

6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

quanti, so siguro pag sa ibang strand stem like you pwede ma uutilize siya
kasi yun yung core diba so, yun.
(We don't have math right now only in quantitative research and we're done
with that, so maybe in the other strands like STEM, it is possible that it will be
utilized because math is the core subject.)

7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

 Ah yah ahm meron kasi pag computer technology ba so may tendency na
ibang applications naprino-provide ng computer aside from that software
63

talaga so pag pag ano ahm, oo may change, may changes talaga parang in sa
advantages parang mas magiging more more parang modernize na way lang
computerize
(Yah, there is a tendency that you will be lose your attention from that
software, and focus on the applications that the computer is providing aside
from that particular mathematical software. Yes there is a change, it is more
modernize compared from the past where the problems should really need to
solve manually and now it can be computerized.)

8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

internet connection yah, so hinid mo siya magagamit so yun lang yung
problema, tsaka pag computer dagdag gatsos lang for bayad kuryente ng
school pero mas magiging advance yung school pag computer talaga pag
computer-aided solution and gagamitin.
(The problem is maybe in the computer itself; you cannot use it without
electricity and without internet connection. And computers can add the
payment of the electricity in school but the school will be more advanced if
they keep on utilizing computers.)

9. What will you do to address this problems?

 What will I do? Hmmmm..so, so ahm kung, kung sa ibang school mas madali
lang nilang masolusyonan yan like private schools, so parang yung financial
school parang, parang ganon, so if you find parang kung hahanap ka ng
yun.
(What will I do? If other schools can easily solve that problem like private
schools because they are financially stable. While us, if we add another
sources that could increase the bill of the electricity in our school, then it is
just another burden. So if you find any solution to your problem, just
contribute the solution, don't add up the problem.)
64

Participant 3 (11 HUMSS)

1. What are advantages if you solve mathematical problems using mathematical

software?
 So, the advantage of mathematical software in solving mathematical problem
is that, it can easily provide the answer to your problem.
(The advantage of mathematical software in solving mathematical problem is,
it can easily provide the answer to your problem.)

2. What are disadvantages if you solve mathematical problems using

mathematical software?
 The disadvantages of mathematical software is that, it will not provide the
solution, it will just give right away the answer you must understand it. Also
the disadvantages is not all students know how to use it and not all students
can provide or can afford gadgets.

3. Would you prefer to solve mathematical problem using computer aided

computation or manual computation? Why?

 For me, although computer aided can provide the correct answer, I am more
prefer to use manual because in manual computation it can enhance my skill
in solving mathematical problems and it can add more knowledge, and I know
how I get my answer.

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

 Yes, it is encouraged if we will use graphing application.
5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?
 No, because students will become more dependent to the applications.
6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

 No, because not everyone have computer, and not everyone know how to use
it.
7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

 Yes, they will be more dependent to the software. They will be lazier in
understanding the solution, and the process of the problem.
65

8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

 Since application can provide the answer without solutions the students cannot
catch up or don't have the idea on why does the computer come up with that
answer.

9. What will you do to address this problems?

 It is ok to use mathematical software/application to help the students, the
answer that was provided will serve as the guide to the students, they will
solve manually for them to know the process and for them to enhance their
skills in mathematics.

Participant 4 (12 TVL)

1. What are advantages if you solve mathematical problems using mathematical

software?
 The advantage of mathematical software, you can easily solve the problem by
using this ahh... example these gadgets like cellphone you can use your
cellphone by using a calculator.
(The advantage of mathematical software, you can easily solve the problemby
the gadgets like cellphone using calculator.)

2. What are disadvantages if you solve mathematical problems using

mathematical software?
 You can enhance yourself by using mathematical software and you don't know
what the process of this solution is.

3. Would you prefer to solve mathematical problem using computer aided

computation or manual computation? Why?

 I would prefer myself by using manual computation it’s because it enhances
my knowledge and ability using this manual computation.

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

 No, it’s because there is a disadvantage in using these gadgets like the students
will not enhance his ability.

5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?

 No, because students will become more dependent to the applications.
66

6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

 Yes, but there is kwan oh ah, disadvantage the disadvantage is they are
depending their answer on that stupid computer.
(Yes, but there is a disadvantage; they are depending their answer on that
stupid computer.)

7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

 Yes, once you ah use the computer you will not able to enhance yourself by
using your mental thinking such as solving manual computation.

8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

 The students will become lazy.
9. What will you do to address this problems?
 Do not depend on the computer all the time because there is a book to study
and to give you the proper way of solving or the proper ahh... to give you a
solution to your problem.
Participant 5 (12 TVL)

1. What are advantages if you solve mathematical problems using mathematical

software?
 The advantages are easy to solve the problem.
2. What are disadvantages if you solve mathematical problems using

mathematical software?
 The disadvantages are hard to find the answer.
3. Would you prefer to solve mathematical problem using computer aided

computation or manual computation? Why?

 I use manual computation because I love the subject mathematics so that is
easy to me to solve the problem.

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

 It depends to the student if they like this strategy.
5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?
 Encouraged to the other because easy to used.
67

6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

 Depends to the students if they how to used or they want to used it.
7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

 No changes because they are just hoping..
8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

 It’s possible because if blackout? How to proceed the lesson?
9. What will you do to address this problems?
 Don’t use computer-aided use your ability to solve without computer aided to
test our skills in mathematics.

Participant 6 (12 GAS)

1. What are advantages if you solve mathematical problems using mathematical

software?
 So kung ano, kung yung pag uusapan natin is yung solving by using
mathematical software is ano oh uhmm magiging easy yung pagsolve mo
(So if we're talking about solving by using mathematical software, it would be
easier if you're solving using software about mathematical problems.)

2. What are disadvantages if you solve mathematical problems using

mathematical software?
bawal maggamit ng ano oh kailangan by yung pagsolve is ano kailangan
(There are some teachers who are saying that the use of computer software or
anything except calculator is prohibited.)

3. Would you prefer to solve mathematical problem using computer aided

computation or manual computation? Why?

 Mas maganda yung manual computation kase ano kase kapag magcocompute
68

(Manual computation is more appropriate, because if you're computing

manually, you will have additional knowledge on how did you compute or
derive the solution in comparison to the applications.)

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

(Maybe, but it needs to have a proper explanation on how will it be utilized.)

5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?

(Yes it can, maybe if the process or the solution to your problem is well-
explained, then it is good.)

6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

kailangan yung mag mag ano sila ng own way nila kung papano magsolve
ganun.
(For me, if they have applications, they really need to do their own way in
solving.)

7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

 Meron, ano kase ano oh uhmm ako, since high school hanggang ngayon
kailangan talaga marunong kang magsolve ng sarili mong utak or sarili mong
mga kamay.
(There is a change, when I was in high school until now, I use mathematical
softwares so when I have assignments, I tend to use softwares but it is better if
you really know how to solve with the use of your brain and hands.)

8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

niyan,
69

(The possible problem is if the teacher said that it is prohibited to use some
applications in solving, so the students will have a hard time computing
because they are already used in utilizing computer softwares/applications.)

9. What will you do to address this problems?

(For me, maybe it is better if teachers will give the students the will on where
the students prefer to solve but it is much better if there are no apps in solving
and you will solve it yourself because you will learn from it using your own
ideas without the help of other apps.)

Participant 7 (12 GAS)

1. What are advantages if you solve mathematical problems using mathematical

software?
 The advantages in using mathematical software in solving mathematical
problems is the accuracy of the answers, it can also help you to solve more
easily and more quickly and definitely save your time from solving.

2. What are disadvantages if you solve mathematical problems using

mathematical software?
 The disadvantages in using mathematical software in solving mathematical
problem is that you will lose the knowledge about the process of solving
wherein you can only have it on solving it manually.

3. Would you prefer to solve mathematical problem using computer aided

computation or manual computation? Why?

 For me, using the computer-aided computation or manual computation in
solving mathematical problem will be depend on the situation, if you are in a
hurry in solving a problem and the solution are not necessary it us best for you
to use computer-aided computation but when you are required of having a
process or the solution I suggest that you should use a manual one for you to
be able to explain how you come up with your correct answer.

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

70

 No, because using a computer-aided solutions also have their disadvantages if

you use it in your class especially when you are taking or answering a
quiz/exam it just teaching to be lazy.

5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?

 Somehow, it may but it’s depend with the situation it can be used during the
lesson or discussion but it should be prohibited during the exam.

6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

 Maybe, it would depend with the ability of a teacher to how she/he can help
them.

7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

 Yes, because using a computer-aided computation can teach student to be lazy
and they will have less understanding/knowledge in solving mathematical
problems manually.

8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

 The possible problem that you may encounter in using computer-aided
solutions will be utilized in the class is when you will have a quiz wherein you
are not allowed to use any devices it is difficult for you to answer in manually.

9. What will you do to address this problems?

 To address those problems I would take an exam then see if software would
have any significance.

Participant 8 (11 STEM)

1. What are advantages if you solve mathematical problems using mathematical

software?

malalaman tapos sa mathematical software, as far as i know yung
71

(So the advantages are if you use mathematical software in solving
mathematical problems, it would be easier to solve because mathematical
software has symbols wherein you can easily distinguish and those symbols
contain or describe problem solving.)

2. What are disadvantages if you solve mathematical problems using

mathematical software?
mathematical software is that kapag kapag wala kaseng resources, yung
softwares.
(The disadvantages in solving mathematical problems using mathematical
softwares are that there is a lack of resources and also you will have
difficulties in solving mathematical problems if you don't have enough
knowledge in utilizing mathematical softwares.)

3. Would you prefer to solve mathematical problem using computer aided

computation or manual computation? Why?

(In solving mathematical problems, it would be easier if a computer-aided is
utilized because it can fasten and it has everything that you need.)

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

(Yes, because when my teachers give me assignments, I answer those in my
house where I search in google to find some help because I am not good in the
class.)

5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?

72

(Yes of course, because nowadays wherein the life of humans is already

technology-based, we need to know this kind of stuffs so that we don't have to
be ignorant and we can easily gather information and adapt to the society
easily.)

6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

 Opo kase... So kailangan.. so matutunan to ng mga estudyante sa
mathematical problems.
(Yes, the students will learn how to utilize the softwares with help of the
teachers. The teachers can teach the students inside the computer lab, the
students can finally know how to use mathematical software in solving
mathematical problems.)

7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

(Of course, if we solve problems manually, we utilize papers. With that we can
lessen the cutting of trees and it can hasten the process of solving
mathematical problems.)

8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

software, kapag blackout di natin to magagamit. Electricity, kapag kulang
yung electricity di tayo makagamit ng laptop o computer so hindi tayo
makasolve ng mathematical problems using mathematical software, so yun
nga yung problema natin.
(If we use computers and then it is blackout, we cannot be able to utilize it. If
the electricity is not enough, then we cannot use laptop or computer so we
cannot solve mathematical problems using mathematical softwares.)

9. What will you do to address this problems?

73

problema na ukol sa computer aided solutions at yun yung electricity

particularly blackout.
(So with the use of social media, we all know that one way to inform people is
through social media. By using social media, we can express our insights and
problems in relation to the computer-aided solutions and that is the electricity
particularly the blackout.)

Participant 9 (11 ABM)

1. What are advantages if you solve mathematical problems using mathematical

software?
 Aahm well the advantages is na mas easier siya other than computing hand by
hand kasi kapag kuan kasi ang mathematical software kaagad binigigay agad
ang answer without you calculating anything or something but kaagad siya
(Well the advantages are it is easier than computing hand by hand, because
mathematical software immediately provides the answer without you
calculating anything or something. It easily gives the answer to you and you
don't have to experience difficulty anymore, that's the main advantage of it.)

2. What are disadvantages if you solve mathematical problems using

mathematical software?
 Ahm disadvantages for students parang magiging kampante sila na hindi nila
for example malay mo one day na kailangan nila hand by hand na I compute
mahihirapan.
(The disadvantage is that students will become overconfident and for example
one day they will have to compute hand by hand and mathematical software is
prohibited, they will have a hard time in solving.)

3. Would you prefer to solve mathematical problem using computer aided

computation or manual computation? Why?

74

(Honestly, computer-aided computation, because sometimes I experience

difficulties in solving manually so it can really help me with that.)

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

 Ah encourage siya dito kasi sa teacher namin sa stats in in SPSS para mas
easier kami maka compute so inencourge niya kame na, yes inencourage niya
din kami na mag manual at the same time parang easier daw sa amin

5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?

 Ahmm… maybe, well siguro,or yes kasi kapag marami kasi ngayon
estudyante nahihirapan kapag sa solving especially math so siguro kapag i-
kuan iencourage siya sa lahat its easier for everyone and mostly sa mga
estudyante na nahihirapan sa math.
(Yes or maybe, because there are many students who experience difficulties in
solving especially in math, so maybe if it was encouraged to all, it is easier
for everyone mostly to the students who find mathematics difficult.)

6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

 Dipende for example, ah one student yung for example, kapag yung aided,
aided ah, yung computer-aided laptop or some sort na wala man sila laptop
siguro mahihirapan sila but kapag meron naman ding estudyante namang yun
everyone can use it kapag mern silang laptop or hinidi, or kung wala man
pwede sila makahiram at alam nila kung anong gawin.
(It depends, for example, if students don't have any computer-aided laptop so
they will find it difficult but if they have, they can really utilize it. But maybe
everyone can utilize it if all of them have laptops and if they don't, they will
just have to borrow and know what to do.)

7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

mas madali to,tapos kapah kailangan nila manual dun na sila mahihirapan.
(When it is computer-aided, they immediately compute the answer without
knowing the the process. And when they have to solve manually, they will find
it difficult.)
75

8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

fifix padin.
(Problems, maybe the software that has defaults or viruses. But maybe there
are only few problems because we are already modernized and mostly we're
under technologies so we can really utilize the softwares and if there are
problems, it can easily be fixed.)

9. What will you do to address this problems?

 Well, siguro I guguide yung mga students or in school na nahihirapan i-utilize
siya or kapag may mga defaults man or viruses kailangan tulungan syempre
(Well, maybe students should be guided in school if they find it hard to utilize
or if there are any defaults or viruses, it needs to be repaired.)

Participant 10 (11 HUMSS)

1. What are advantages if you solve mathematical problems using mathematical

software?

correct, still I tried my best in solving it.

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

 Ah encourage siya dito kasi sa teacher namin sa stats in in SPSS para mas
easier kami maka compute so inencourge niya kame na, yes inencourage niya
76

din kami na mag manual at the same time parang easier daw sa amin
(Our statistics teacher encourage us to use computer softwares particularly
SPSS, so that it will be easier to compute. He also encourages us to do
manual computation at the same time.)

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

 Yes, in a way that the students are lazy to solve a problem.

8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

 I think students will depend more on computer-aided solutions instead of
manual computations.

9. What will you do to address this problems?

 Instead of always using computer-aided solving why not use manual
computation in solving problems so that students will not get lazy when it
comes to solving problems.

 Not all the time, teaching style of our teacher is all about solving without
using applications.
5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?
 Yes! Because it is important, not at all the time we can use calculator for
solving mathematical problems.

6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

 Maybe yes! Because some of my classmates are they do not know.
7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?

(Yes, because you don't need to rely all the time from that application, you
should know how to answer without utilizing an application.)

8. What could be the possible problems if computer-aided solutions will be

utilized in the class?

(It will be easeir to resolve mathematical problems.)
9. What will you do to address this problems?
 We should learn base on our own knowledge, experiences and explore.

Participant 13 (11 TVL)

79

1. What are advantages if you solve mathematical problems using mathematical

software?
 Using calculator or cellphone, it can help us solve the problems ng madali.
2. What are disadvantages if you solve mathematical problems using

mathematical software?
 Pwede masagot ang tanong na maaring di tama ang sagot like the photomath
application.
(The answers have chances that it is wrong like the photomath application.)

3. Would you prefer to solve mathematical problem using computer aided

computation or manual computation? Why?

 Yes, because may iba kasing question on problem solving difficult to answer.
(Yes, because there are questions in problem solving that are difficult to
answer.)

4. Are computer-aided solutions encouraged in your class? In what way?

 Yes, to solve the difficult question.
5. Do you think computer-aided solutions should be encouraged? Why?
 Yes, because we can get idea or solution in computer to compute the difficult
question or solution.

6. If a computer-aided solution is encouraged in the class, can each student be

able to utilize it? Why?

 Yes, we can utilize it by getting idea example and any formula by its solution
and etc.

7. Will there be a change in the way the students study mathematics if

computer-aided problem solving allowed? Why?
