CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION TO
EASTERN MEDICINE
– PRINCIPLES &
CONCEPTS
The ancient Roman writer Publilius Syrus once
said, “Good health and good sense are two of
life’s greatest blessings.”

Indeed, good health is one of our greatest assets.

With the aid of expensive, high-end technology, Western medicine

has become very specialized in managing life-threatening diseases,
traumatic injuries, and other health crises.

However, it is much less effective at maintaining an individual’s

good health and wellbeing over the course of their lifetime. In
fact, western doctors seem relatively uninterested in identifying,
addressing and preventing the underlying causes of ill-health and
disease as they build up in the body.

Traditional systems of Eastern medicine adopt a completely dif-

ferent approach. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) views every
individual as an energetic network of interconnecting channels
and organs.1

And although TCM is very good at treating disease, traditional

Chinese practitioners are more interested in maintaining an
individual’s health rather than waiting until disease happens and
then treating it. In other words, the governing philosophy is that
prevention is better than cure.

6 Creation vs Chemicals: An In-Depth Look at Eastern vs. Western Medicine by Ty & Charlene Bollinger
There is a Chinese saying that exemplifies this attitude – “Treat-
ing an illness is like digging a well when thirsty.” While there may
be some benefit to digging a well when we’re thirsty, preparing
beforehand is obviously the smarter thing to do.

While the development of TCM has been influenced by various

spiritual traditions such as shamanism, Taoism, and Buddhism
over the centuries, as it is practiced in most of China and in the
rest of the world today, TCM is a non-religious, non-denomina-
tional system of medicine.

Ayurveda is a 5000-year-old medicinal system of conscious, nat-

ural, and holistic living that originated in India. Ayurveda works
to enhance both physical and psychological wellbeing.2

In the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, Ayurveda stands for

“the science of life”, since the Sanskrit root ayur means “life” and
veda means “science”, or “knowledge”. This ancient traditional
practice is designed to nourish our mind, body, and spirit in a
gentle, easy manner over the entire duration of our lives.

Similar to TCM, Ayurveda rejects a disease-based mindset and

instead emphasizes that we are self-healing beings who can main-
tain – and regain – good health simply by consuming healing
foods, living a balanced lifestyle, and working towards inner peace.

Ayurveda further states that while change is the essence of life,

it is possible to adapt to these changes and attain long-lasting
health. In other words, our ability to balance in our adaptation to
change rewards us with health, while lack of balance translates
as ill-health or disease.

Conscious living by aligning our inner nature, or microcosm, with

outer Nature, or macrocosm, is the key.

While some aspects of Ayurveda find their place in Hindu spiritual “TREATING AN
practices, as it is practiced throughout the western world and even ILLNESS IS LIKE
in most of India today, Ayurveda, like TCM, is a non-religious, DIGGING A WELL
non-denominational system of medicine. WHEN THIRSTY.”

CHAPTER 2

WHY IS WESTERN
MEDICINE BROKEN?
Did you know that according to Japanese law,
doctors can use almost any therapy they sin-
cerely believe is necessary and would work for
their patients?

This allows Japanese doctors to be innovative and recommend

treatments that they believe will really work, even for difficult
cases like brain cancer. In other words, in Japan and in other
South Asian countries, traditional Eastern medicine and Western
medicine coexist in peace.

This is in stark contrast to the U.S. and many other parts of the
world, where the knee-jerk “one size fits all” approach to cancer
treatment prevails. Both conventional cancer therapies, chemo-
therapy and radiation, end up severely damaging the patient’s
body, especially their immune system – which, as we all know, is
responsible for fighting the cancer in the first place!

Why is this allowed to happen?

Why are western doctors so uninformed about nutrition that

they fail to tell their patients to consume antioxidant-rich foods
that have been shown to strengthen our defenses against disease,
including cancer?

On the other hand, every western-trained physician is thoroughly

trained in prescribing patented medicines, thanks to the pervasive
and powerful influence of the drug lobby.

This illogical disparity is by design. Over a century ago, the Car-

negie and Rockefeller Foundations set out a plan to engineer the
medical school curriculum through their grants and donations.
The influential report of Johns Hopkins-trained science administra-
tor and politician Abraham Flexner, written in 1910 in commission
for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in
Washington, DC, had a massive influence on complementary and
alternative medicine throughout the 20th century.3

In the U.S., in the late 1800s, early 1900s, and up to the 20th
century, there were homeopathic and naturopathic schools, and
even schools that taught herbal medicine.

To eliminate their competition, the Rockefeller and Carnegie

Foundations set about creating a medical monopoly by patenting
drug-based medicine. The basis of the Flexner report – commis-
sioned for the Carnegie Foundation – was that it was far too easy
to start a medical school and that most schools were not teaching
sound medicine.

In plain language, these medical schools were not training their

doctors to prescribe chemical drugs being manufactured by Car-
negie and Rockefeller.

As a direct consequence of the Flexner report and its implemen-

tation by the American Medical Association (AMA), over 10,000
herbalists were out of business by 1925. By 1940, more than
1500 chiropractors had been prosecuted for practicing quack-
ery. The 22 homeopathic medical schools that had flourished in
the 1900s dwindled down to just two by 1923. By 1950, all the
schools teaching homeopathy were closed.

10 Creation vs Chemicals: An In-Depth Look at Eastern vs. Western Medicine by Ty & Charlene Bollinger
If a physician did not graduate from a Flexner-approved medical
school, and receive an MD degree, then they could not find a job
anywhere. This is why today, most physicians are so heavily
biased towards synthetic drug therapy and know next to nothing
about nutrition.

Not surprisingly, Carnegie and Rockefeller began to immediately

donate hundreds of millions of dollars to medical schools that
were teaching drug-based medicine. In return for the financing,
the schools were required to continue teaching medical courses
that were mainly if not exclusively drug-oriented, with little to no
emphasis on natural medicine.

After they had donated the money, they and other donors would
demand – and get – someone from their family or staff appointed
to the medical school’s board of directors.

In other words, the boards of directors of medical schools and

Universities began to be filled up with people who were on the pay-
roll of the donors. So naturally, the curriculum of the Universities
and other teaching centers swung completely in the direction of
pharmaceutical drugs, and it has remained that way ever since.

Most of the medical profession today exists to serve the pharmaceu-

tical industry. How else do we explain the fact that chemotherapy
is the number one treatment recommended by oncologists today?

A major, if not THE major reason the war on cancer continues

today, is the money that is being made from prescribing chemo-
therapy and radiation therapy. Chemotherapy uses some of the
most powerful poisons known to humans. These toxins are being
marketed as substances that can kill cancer cells. At the same time,
they also kill many healthy cells in the body, damage organs, and
nearly wipe out the immune system, which make recovery from
cancer next to impossible. THE MAJOR REASON
THE WAR ON CANCER
Last but not least, the very chemicals being used to fight cancer CONTINUES TODAY,
very likely cause cancer themselves! So, instead of eliminating or IS THE MONEY THAT
gaining some measure of control over cancer, conventional cancer IS BEING MADE
therapies may be contributing to generating new cancers. FROM PRESCRIBING
CHEMOTHERAPY AND
A sad and regrettable state of affairs indeed. RADIATION THERAPY.

CHAPTER 2: WHY IS WESTERN MEDICINE BROKEN? 11

CHAPTER 3

TRADITIONAL
CHINESE
MEDICINE (TCM)
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a holis-
tic system which are believed to have originated
in China around 4000 years ago, with a unique
view of every individual as an energetic network
of interconnecting channels and organs. TCM
provides a simple yet profound understanding
of how our body works and its relationship with
our environment.1

Specific aspects of Chinese medicine have been found in ancient

texts dating as far back as 1000 BC. In fact, the oldest textbook
still in use in Chinese medicine today is known as the “Yellow
Emperor’s Inner Classic” (Huangdi Neijing), which is estimated
to have been written around 300 BC and is believed to contain
information from much earlier texts.

In the 16th Century, the Ming dynasty physician Li Zhi Zen wrote
an encyclopedia of herbal medicine in which he catalogued the
actions and uses of many herbs that are still in use today. Simi-
larly, his classic treatise on pulse diagnosis is still being used by
traditional Chinese medical practitioners.

Over the centuries, various schools of thought and influences

within and outside China have led to a rich and varied tradition
of healing practices, which continues to the present day. During
the last 150 years or so, Western conventional medicine began
to be favored over TCM until the Communist revolution of 1949,
which returned TCM to a position of favor.
The fundamental underlying principle of TCM is Qi (pronounced
as “chi”), loosely translated as “energy” or “life-force”. Qi is present
throughout our body and in our surrounding environment.

Qi is believed to flow through channels along the surface of the

body known as meridians, while also plunging deep within to
connect with internal organs, thereby giving life to the whole
body. Along with Qi, blood and bodily fluids are also believed to
play a very important role in maintaining health.

Qi is constantly flowing because of a constant dynamic process

between two equal poles known as Yin and Yang. These two
poles are inseparable and interdependent and represent the
duality which lies at the core of all existence. When either
Yin or Yang becomes too much relative to the other, poor
health is the outcome.

The entire Universe and every living being in it

can be understood in terms of Yin and Yang.
Chinese medical practitioners believe
that applying this knowledge in every-
day life can help to maintain good health
and wellbeing over one’s lifetime.

Good health is understood as when

the flow of Qi and blood is balanced
and harmonious through the body,
channels and internal organs. In
fact, health is not just the absence of
disease symptoms, but the vital pres-
ence of a dynamic state of wellbeing.

If the flow of Qi and blood becomes disordered, either due to a

weakness in the flow or because the flow is blocked for some
reason, ill-health and disease happen.

TCM uses multiple approaches to prevent and treat illness.

Applying a variety of methods, customized to the needs and
inclinations of the individual, is always preferable. Sometimes
a simple adjustment to the diet and activity levels is enough. If
not, more powerful methods such as acupuncture and herbal
medicine are available.

The Chinese View Of Health

Extremes of excess and abstinence are believed to be associated

with poor health.

A number of factors influence our wellbeing, including:

++ Constitution – The strength of our

energy in this life, this is what we
are born with. Our constitution can
be strengthened by Qi gong, Tai Chi,
meditation & prayer, and herbal therapy.

++ Lifestyle – Our lifestyle affects our health.

Long-term exposure to high stress levels
and emotional disturbances have a major
impact. Chinese medicine takes the view
that how we react to the world around us is the root cause
of our physical and mental problems. Getting enough rest
and allowing our body to replenish itself is very important. EXTREMES OF EXCESS
AND ABSTINENCE
++ Climate and Seasons – The external environment ARE BELIEVED TO BE
influences both the level and the type of exercise as well ASSOCIATED WITH
as the diet that is most suitable for us. People who live in POOR HEALTH.
rural areas are much more aware of the effect of climate
on their lives than those of us who live in urban settings.
The time of year is also important with regards to our
health. As the length of the day and temperature change,
we should adapt both our diet and levels of activity.

++ Physical Activity – We need appropriate levels of physical

activity and exercise along with suitable amounts of rest to
keep ourselves healthy. The gentle exercises of Tai Chi and Qi
Gong benefit the body and keep both Qi and blood flowing.

++ Injury – injuries are believed to cause localized

obstructions to the flow of Qi and blood. If the
injury is slight, only Qi is affected. In more severe
instances, bleeding, pain, and swelling may occur.

++ Poisons and Toxins – Consuming poisons, toxins,

spoiled, or uncooked food can lead to health problems.

Chapter 3: TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM) 15

Healing Modalities In TCM

++ Meditation & Prayer – This is considered to be the most

important aspect of Chinese medicine. A text from the Han
dynasty states that it is most important to nourish the
spirit, and it is only of secondary importance to nourish the
body. The Tibetans put it another way: “The mind is King”.
They believe that it is at the level of the mind that true
healing can occur.

Indeed, meditation & prayer and visualization exercises

have been shown to have a powerful healing effect on our
health, likely by increasing our levels of emotional and
mental wellbeing.

Research has confirmed multiple health benefits

associated with meditation and prayer, including
stress reduction, lower anxiety, less depression, pain
reduction, improved memory and many more.4

16 Creation vs Chemicals: An In-Depth Look at Eastern vs. Western Medicine by Ty & Charlene Bollinger
++ Acupuncture and Moxibustion – is a fairly well-known
approach nowadays, in which fine needles are used to
painlessly pierce the skin at specific points. Acupuncture
needles and their manipulation by an acupuncturist are
meant to strengthen and balance the Qi.

Once an acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin, Qi

is believed to start arriving at the needle – a sensation
known as De Qi. Needles are usually left in place for about
15 minutes or so. In general, the longer the needles are left
in, the stronger the treatment is believed to be.

Recent large-scale clinical trials and systematic reviews

have clearly demonstrated acupuncture’s safety and
efficacy for the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal
pain.5 Positive results have also been seen for various
psychogenic disorders in several randomized clinical trials.
A psychogenic illness is any physical illness believed to
arise from emotional or mental stressors, or because of
underlying psychological or psychiatric disorders.

Moxibustion is the practice of burning moxa (a dried

herb known as mugwort) above specific points on the
body to improve energy flow and relieve pain. Some
practitioners burn moxa on acupuncture needles to
direct warming energy straight to a particular point.

Chapter 3: TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM) 17

++ Chinese Herbal Medicine – In the Chinese tradition,
herbs include not just plants, but also minerals, shells,
animals, and insects. These are given to patients from the
perspective of manipulating and rebalancing their energies
– Qi and blood. Each herb is believed to have a particular
energy, which when properly matched to the energy of the
patient, can restore health.

Examples of herbs used in Chinese medicine for treating

ailments such as cancer include:

Cannabis, which has been cultivated in Asia for millennia

and has been continually documented in TCM for
approximately 1,800 years.

Antrodia cinnamomea is a fungal species that has been

widely used in Taiwan for treating many health conditions,
including cancer. It has been shown to possess powerful
anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties along with its
ability to promote cell death in several human cancers.6

Hedyotis diffusa is another herb used for detoxification

and blood purification in TCM. The combination
of Hedyotis diffusa and scutellaria barbota has been
shown to prevent growth of bladder cancer cells
in culture. Indeed, this combination of herbs is
widely used to treat bladder cancer in Taiwan.7

18 Creation vs Chemicals: An In-Depth Look at Eastern vs. Western Medicine by Ty & Charlene Bollinger
++ Qi Gong and Tai Chi Ch’uan – Qi Gong
means to cultivate, work with, or develop
Qi through focused and concentrated
effort over time. In fact, any system of
working with one’s own energy can be
called Qi Gong. Like meditation and
prayer, this is a self-practice.

Qi Gong consists of a series of postural

movements, breathing patterns,
meditation & prayer, and mind-based
practices. Like meditation, it is called
a “practice”, since it is meant to be
performed daily to fully benefit from its
effects. There are literally hundreds of
styles, schools, and traditions of Qi Gong
in China and Tibet.

Tai Chi Ch’uan or Tai Chi is a traditional

Chinese exercise that aims to enhance
balance, self-awareness, and overall
health through deep breathing and
slow, gentle movements performed in
specific sequences, known as forms.
These gentle movements – originally
derived from the martial arts – involve positioning of the
hands, legs, waist, and spine so as to exercise all the muscles
and joints of the body. Ideally, Tai Chi movements, Qi Gong QI GONG AND TAI CHI
breathing exercises, and meditation/prayer practice should ADDRESS ONE OF OUR
be combined together for a holistic practice. MOST FUNDAMENTAL

Qi Gong and Tai Chi address one of our most fundamental OUR ENERGY, OR
properties – our energy, or life-force. Their practical LIFE-FORCE.
applications are many, including long-lasting benefits for
fitness, sports, martial arts, health and healing, longevity,
and development of one’s spirituality.

Randomized clinical trials have consistently shown

major health benefits for Qi Gong and Tai Chi, including
improved bone density, better heart function,
improvements in psychological symptoms, enhanced
immune function and an overall better quality of life.8

Chapter 3: TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM) 19

++ Chinese Massage – The oldest surviving reference to
massage occurs in the “Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic”
(Huangdi Neijing), which mentions 12 different massage
techniques and their clinical applications. In those days,
massage was simply referred to as An Mo, or “pressing and
rubbing”. Application of customized herbal ointments to
specific areas of the body or even specific points to treat
specific illnesses was a common practice.

Nowadays, An Mo refers to the massage done for gentle

relaxation, release of tensions, and help improve wellbeing
and immunity. An Mo is also used to treat many common
complaints. In China, children receive An Mo massages from
an early age.

On the other hand, Tui Na refers exclusively to professional,

clinical massage therapy practiced by trained, licensed
Chinese doctors after a formal medical diagnosis. Some
Tui Na techniques are considered to be extremely
difficult and usually take many years to master.

TOP 10 NATURAL HEALING (& MOSTLY HIDDEN) PROTOCOLS FROM OUR JOURNEY THROUGH ASIA
20 Creation vs Chemicals: An In-Depth Look at Eastern vs. Western Medicine by Ty & Charlene Bollinger
++ Diet – How we prepare, cook and eat our food is intimately
linked to our health and wellbeing. According to Chinese
medicine, since Qi underpins all existence, not only the type
of food but also its energy is important. The intrinsic Qi of
each food, as well as its preparation and cooking – both of
which can change its Qi – are key factors influencing our
health. Of course, in our modern world, we also have to take
into account the agricultural practices, processing, and
distribution methods that brings our food to our plates.

Genesis 1:29: “Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant
on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed
in it. They will be yours for food.”

As contacts grew with neighboring countries, including Japan,

Korea, and Vietnam, TCM began to spread outwards from China.
Native systems of medicine already existed in these countries,
which were influenced and enriched by TCM. This has led to a
situation where the methods of medicine being practiced are
unique to each country, yet each is heavily influenced and based
upon the fundamental principles of TCM.

CHAPTER 4

TOP 10 PROTOCOLS
WE ENCOUNTERED
IN OUR JOURNEY
THROUGH ASIA
I Medicinal Mushrooms

Modern research confirms what many traditional healers in many

cultures have known for centuries – that mushrooms contain
some of the most potent, yet safest medicinal ingredients found
in nature.9 What’s more, most of these ingredients cause very few
side effects – if at all – even at very high doses.

It’s clear now that mushrooms are legitimate treatments in their

own right for many health conditions, including diabetes, Alzhei-
mer’s disease, and cancer.9

Exciting medicinal mushrooms we encountered in our Journey

Through Asia include Reishi, also known as Lingzhi (Ganoderma
lucidum) and a bizarre parasitic fungus known as Cordyceps (Cordy
ceps sinensis) which has a wide range of very potent health-giving
properties.

Let’s take a look at how these mushrooms, which when consumed

either as food or supplements (from verified sources only), can
greatly benefit your health and quality of living.
++ Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) – also known as the
Caterpillar Fungus and Dong Ching Xia Cao (Summer
grass, winter worm), Cordyceps has long been a
part of traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine.10,
11, 12
An extremely rare combination of a mummified
caterpillar and a fungus, it is found at very high
altitudes in the Himalayas, on the Tibetan plateau, and
other high-altitude locations around the world.12

++ Cordyceps – both the mummified caterpillar and the fungus

– contain many potent bioactive compounds, including
cordyceptin, cordycepic acid, polysaccharides, and sterols.10

Studies have shown that Cordyceps helps to:

++ Manage blood sugar levels in a healthy range – Emerging

evidence indicates that the Cordyceps is likely to
prove to useful in the management of diabetes.13, 14

++ Improve transplant success rates – Cordyceps protects

the heart15 and lowered the rate of cardiac rejection in an
animal model of heart transplantation.16 When given after
kidney transplants, Cordyceps also reduced the rejection
rate, improved kidney and liver function, boosted red blood
cell production, and lowered infection rates in patients.17

++ Strengthen the immune system - Cordyceps boosted

production and activity of various components of
the immune system in animal experiments.18

++ Enhance antioxidant ability - Cordyceps

raised levels and activity of innate enzymatic
antioxidant systems in animal models.18

++ Boost libido - Cordyceps boosts libido and sexual

activity, along with restoring impaired reproductive
function in animals as well as humans.19

++ Improve exercise performance - Cordyceps made

international headlines by helping Chinese runners
break two world records by huge margins at the Asian
Games in 1993.20 Cordyceps likely improves stamina

because it stimulates production of ATP, one of the
main sources of energy in our body’s cells.19 Cordyceps
has also been shown to dilate the aorta – the main
artery in the body that supplies oxygenated blood
to the entire circulatory system – by 40%, greatly
increasing blood flow and enhancing endurance.10

++ Fight cancer – In laboratory experiments, Cordyceps was

selectively toxic for cancer cells, without affecting normal,
healthy cells. Bioactive ingredients in Cordyceps including
cordyceptin attack and destroy mouth, bladder, prostate,
breast, liver, lung, cervical, leukemia, and colorectal cancers
as well as lymphoma, melanoma, and neuroblastoma
in culture.19, 21, 22, 23

Cordyceps can also be effectively combined with other forms

of anticancer therapy.24 Cordyceptin prevents migration
of cancer cells from their original location to other parts
of the body, known as metastasis – which is usually fatal.

Randomized, controlled clinical trials are still needed to understand

the full extent of the efficacy and safety of Cordyceps.

It is inadvisable to take Cordyceps if diagnosed with either acute

myeloid leukemia (AML) or chronic myeloid leukemia ‘(CML),
since Cordyceps has been shown to increase the proliferation of
red blood cell precursor cells.11

It is also not advisable to take Cordyceps while using antiplatelet

or anticoagulant (blood thinning) drugs or along with blood sugar
lowering medications.11

++ Reishi / Ling Zhi (Ganoderma lucidum) – used for over 2000

years by sages and shamans and known in China as the
“spirit plant” – also known as Mannentake, Ling Zhi or
Ling Chi – Reishi relaxes and fortifies both mind and body.
This fungus holds a very important place in the traditional
medical systems of China, Japan, and Korea.25, 26, 27

Reishi contains many hundreds of potent bioactive compounds,

including polysaccharides such as beta-glucans and other glu-
cans, triterpenoids and other steroid-based compounds such as

Chapter 4: TOP 10 PROTOCOLS WE ENCOUNTERED IN OUR JOURNEY THROUGH ASIA 25

ganoderic and ganoderenic acids, as well as ganoderans and Ling
Zhi-8 protein.25

Studies have shown that Reishi helps to:

++ Counter free radicals and fight inflammation - Reishi

has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
properties.25, 28, 29, 30 In fact, Reishi compares very favorably
to the synthetic anti-inflammatory drug prednisone,
without the side effects. Also, Reishi may be able to counter
our susceptibility to many aging-associated diseases,
thanks to its powerful ability to fight free radicals and
reduce cellular damage associated with oxidative stress.

++ Enhance immune system activity – Reishi enhances

multiple aspects of the immune system in advanced
stage cancer patients28, 31 and lung cancer patients.32

++ Fight cancer - Reishi ingredients are toxic to multiple

cancer cell lines in culture – including leukemia,
breast, ovarian, cervical, and lung cancer cells, among
others.33, 34, 35 Evidence suggests Ganoderic acid is a
potential anti-metastatic agent.36, 37 Metastasis is the
migration of cancer cells from their place of origin
to other areas of the body and is invariably fatal.

Health Tip – Reishi tea and supplements are a great way to boost
your immune defenses. (Order only from reliable sources)

Note: health experts warn that it is not advisable to take Reishi

supplements or drink Reishi tea while using antiplatelet or anti-
coagulant (blood thinning) drugs.27

Since Reishi can enhance our immune response and increase

blood antioxidant capacity, it is advisable to consult a physician
before taking it in combination with immunosuppressants and
other drugs for various health conditions.27

To be on the safe side, be sure to consult your physician before

taking any Reishi or Cordyceps preparations or supplements,
especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a pre-existing
health condition.

TOP 10 NATURAL HEALING (& MOSTLY HIDDEN) PROTOCOLS FROM OUR JOURNEY THROUGH ASIA
26 Creation vs Chemicals: An In-Depth Look at Eastern vs. Western Medicine by Ty & Charlene Bollinger
II Liposomal P53 Gene Therapy

Dr. Shin Akiyama graduated from Sapporo Medical University

School of Medicine in

1989 and was trained as a specialist in chemotherapy. He has

been treating cancer patients for 30 years. About 10 years ago,
Dr. Akiyama started practicing immunotherapy. Six years ago, he
started practicing cancer gene therapy.

According to Dr. Akiyama, the number one cause of cancer in

Japanese men is gastric cancer, while in Japanese women, it is
breast cancer.

Most cancer patients have an unwanted genetic alteration, or

“mutation”, in a gene known as P53. In fact, P53 is the most com-
monly mutated gene in human cancers.38

Levels of activated P53 protein in a cell go up during periods of

stress, leading to stoppage or “arrest” of the cell cycle, allowing
the cell to repair itself or commit suicide by apoptosis (also known
as programmed cell death) if the damage is too extensive. These
normally protective mechanisms are prevented by mutations in
the P53 gene, which allow damaged cells to continue replicating.
Left unchecked, this can lead to cancer formation.

A P53 mutation can also contribute to a cancer cell’s resistance to

chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Administering intact, non-mu-
tated P53 to cancer cells can potentially eliminate this resistance
by “arresting” the cancer cell cycle and inducing apoptosis in the
cancer cell.

Liposomes are spherical vesicles made up of liquid completely MOST CANCER

enclosed by a double layer of fatty membranes. Liposomes can be PATIENTS HAVE AN
used to contain and administer nutrients and therapies such as UNWANTED GENETIC
liposomal P53. Dr. Akiyama and his colleagues enclose or “wrap” ALTERATION, OR
normal, non-mutated P53 plus amino acids into liposomes, then “MUTATION”, IN A
administer these liposomes intravenously (IV). GENE KNOWN AS P53.

which then induces apoptosis or programmed cell death, killing
the cancer cells.

According to Dr. Akiyama, liposomal P53 gene therapy can be

used to successfully target most of the solid cancers (not blood
cancers) such as brain cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, liver
cancer, pancreatic cancer, and bladder cancer.

III Mistletoe Therapy

Mistletoe (scientific name Viscum album, Viscum coloratum) – also

known as Viscum, All-heal, and Birdlime – is a semi-parasitic plant
that grows on various host trees. In Europe, mistletoe has been
used since ancient times for various medicinal purposes.

According to Dr. Homer Lim, the Medical Director of Akesis

Holistic Health in Quezon City, the Philippines, mistletoe
greatly benefits cancer patients because it boosts their
immune system. He says that hundreds of studies with
hundreds of thousands of patients have proven the mistletoe
actually not only extends life but also improves quality of life.

Indeed, various mistletoe preparations have been used for cancer

therapy since 1917 and mistletoe’s effects on cancer have been
thoroughly assessed in over 100 clinical trials. Today, mistletoe
is the most frequently used complementary therapy in tumor
treatment.39, 40

Evidence from laboratory experiments shows that mistletoe

extracts directly prevent cancer cell growth and stimulate the
immune system to fight cancer.41 Further, mistletoe improves
symptoms as well as quality of life and general wellbeing in patients
afflicted with multiple types of cancers.

Mistletoe has also been shown to reduce the side effects of con-
ventional cancer treatments. Promisingly, some studies indicate
that it may prolong patient survival.

Helixor is a cold extract made from fresh mistletoe, obtained from

fir, pine and apple trees. Some physicians such as Dr. Kenny Yong
Yean-Sirn from Malaysia administer diluted Helixor mistletoe

enemas to patients with rectal tumors, even inject diluted mis-
tletoe solutions directly into tumors. According to Dr. Kenny
Yong, along with its direct actions on cancer, Helixor enemas also
travel via the hepatic portal vein and help to detoxify the liver, by
increasing levels of the powerful detoxifying enzyme Glutathione
S-transferase (GST).

According to Dr. Sandeep Roy, a medical doctor from Nashik

in India, mistletoe is the second most studied mode of cancer
treatment after conventional treatments, such as chemother-
apy, surgery, and radiation. He says that bioactive ingredients
in mistletoe such as lectins and viscotoxins boost the immune
system and induce apoptosis in cancer cells, improving quality
of life, mental ability, general wellbeing, anorexia, insomnia, pain,
weakness – in short, everything comes back to normal.

Interestingly, since mistletoe feeds off other plants – “just like a

tumor on a tree” – Dr. Roy feels that mistletoe growing on different
plants have different properties and indications for cancer therapy.

IV Orthomolecular Medicine

Orthomolecular medicine is the name given to the approach of

maintaining health and preventing and curing disease by using
proper nutrition, such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids,
ozone and hydrogen, and other nutrients. Proponents of orthomo-
lecular medicine believe in the concept of an optimum nutritional
environment in the body and that ill-health is a result of deficien-
cies in this environment.

For instance, Dr. Atsuo Yanagisawa, a well-known Japanese expert

on cancer, uses salvestrols – which are present naturally in fruits,
vegetables and herbs – in his clinic. Interestingly, salvestrols are
phytochemicals made by fruits and vegetables, but only
on the last day or two as they ripen on the vine. All
phytochemicals, including salvestrols, are natural
compounds made by plants to help them fight off
competitors, predators, or harmful pathogens.42

So, unless we consume vine ripened produce, we don’t get salves-

trols in our diet because almost all of the fruits and vegetables in

Chapter 4: TOP 10 PROTOCOLS WE ENCOUNTERED IN OUR JOURNEY THROUGH ASIA 29

American grocery stores are picked green and are ripened on the
boat or in the truck while being transported.

Why does Dr. Yanagisawa believe that salvestrols are important

in the fight against cancer?

According to him, cancer cells contain an enzyme known as

CYP1B1 or Cytochrome P450 1B1, but normal cells do not.
CYP1B1 belongs to the so-called “Cytochrome P450 superfam-
ily” of enzymes, which catalyze or facilitate both the breakdown
of drugs as well as production of cholesterol, steroids, and other
lipids in our body.

Promisingly, CYP1B1 has been shown to convert salvestrols to

toxins.42 So, when salvestrols enter a cancer cell, CYP1B1 converts
them to toxins, inducing apoptosis or programmed cell death in
the cancer cell.

On the other hand, normal cells have no CYP1B1, so salvestrols

don’t do them any harm. In other words, salvestrols are selectively
toxic to cancer cells.

Not only are salvestrols natural dietary anticancer agents, but it

seems likely that the depletion of salvestrols in our diet as a result
of modern farming and food distribution practices might be a major
factor contributing to the global increase in cancer incidence, in
spite of large-scale fruit and vegetable consumption.42

According to Dr. Yanagisawa, it is very important to have positive

emotions such as hope and faith when you’ve been diagnosed with
and are undergoing treatment for cancer. On the other hand, fear
and other negative emotions reduce immunity.
IT IS VERY
IMPORTANT TO HAVE Dr. Yanagisawa has had patients who have survived stage IV cancer

V Hado Technology

Dr. Masaru Emoto was a passionate proponent of the idea that

our thoughts and intentions impact the physical realm. Until he
passed away in 2014, he studied, via Magnetic Resonance Anal-
ysis (MRA) technology and high-speed photographs, how the
molecular structure in water transforms when it is exposed to
human words, thoughts, sounds, and intentions and how water
memorizes that information.

As documented in the New York Times Bestseller, The Hidden

Messages in Water, Dr. Emoto demonstrated how water exposed
to loving, benevolent, and compassionate human intention results
in aesthetically pleasing molecular formations.

On the other hand, water exposed to fearful and discordant human

intentions results in disconnected, disfigured, and “unpleasant”
physical molecular formations.

Based on this knowledge, Dr. Emoto treated more than 10,000

clients with a Hado measuring device and water. He helped to
heal a lot of people with various mental and physical problems.

Seiichiro Yoshinouchi, the famous Japanese Hado vibrational

healer from Tokyo, discussed his views on “Hado” technology for
cancer – described by Dr. Emoto as, “the specific vibrating wave
generated by the electrons orbiting the nucleus of an atom.”

According to Mr. Yoshi, each of our body’s organs has a unique

magnetic resonance field and vibration frequency. A MRA machine
can therefore be used to determine where there are potential prob-
lems within the body by analyzing the differences in resonance,
relative to healthy baseline organs. Further, the MRA machine
can also generate the specific vibration and resonance needed to
heal the problem areas.

In other words, healing vibrations and resonances can actually be

infused into water – a concept identical to that of Paul Barattiero’s Echo
H2 machine that infuses healing frequencies into water. According to
Mr. Yoshi, after measuring a person’s vibration and energy, a custom
water can be created specifically for them. At the same time, they can
also drink the generic Hado water with basic health information in it.

Chapter 4: TOP 10 PROTOCOLS WE ENCOUNTERED IN OUR JOURNEY THROUGH ASIA 31

Dr. Yoshi presented a case study of the very well-known Japanese
movie director, Tetsu Shiratori, who was diagnosed with late-stage
brain cancer in 2006. Surgery to remove the tumor would have
been too risky, so he began treatment with chemotherapy and
radiation, but quickly realized he was going to need something else.

Homeopathy and energy healing also didn’t really work for

him. However, within about 18 months of Hado treatment with
Mr. Yoshi, his brain cancer was completely gone.

Interestingly, Tetsu realized that he had suppressed anger towards

his assistant director, and as part of his overall healing process,
forgave him. He also had many other layers of anger and bitterness,
and he also addressed these issues with forgiveness.

According to Tetsu, our mind and our consciousness creates

our physical state and our reality. Too much stress, anger, fear,
and adrenaline can create unhealthy vibrations and damage our
physical body.

Total healing can only take place when mind, body, and spirit are
all addressed. In other words, managing our emotions plays a
major role in our ability to heal.

VI Anticancer Plants From Asia

Clinacanthus nutans Lindau, known as Sabah snake grass, is

routinely used in traditional herbal medicine for treating skin
rashes, insect and snake bites, lesions caused by herpes simplex
virus, diabetes, and gout in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and
China.43

In the past, when the inhabitants of these countries were bitten

by poisonous snakes, the leaves of this plant were used to counter
the poison.

Naturally occurring bioactive compounds found in Sabah snake

grass include flavonoids, triterpenoids, steroids, phytosterols,
and glycosides. These bioactive ingredients have been shown to
have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-diabetic
activities.

32 Creation vs Chemicals: An In-Depth Look at Eastern vs. Western Medicine by Ty & Charlene Bollinger
Promisingly, Sabah snake grass has also been shown to have
anti-cancer activity against multiple types of human cancer cells
in laboratory experiments.44, 45, 46

Pandanus Amaryllifolius or Pandan is a tropical plant found in

Southeast Asia & South Asia, known for its bright green appearance
and sweet fragrant smell.47 Pandan leaves contain many bioactive
ingredients including isoprene esters, tannins, glycosides, alka-
loids, and richly scented essential oils, which have antioxidant,
antibiofilm, and anti-inflammatory activities.48 Certain bioactive
ingredients in Pandan have also been shown to have anticancer
activity.49, 50

Bruised Pandan leaves and their extracts are routinely used to

flavor rice dishes, and tapioca-based desserts and puddings. Pandan
leaves are also used as a wrap for grilling, barbecuing or steaming
chicken, meat, fish and desserts.

Pandan leaves can be boiled in water to make tea, with ginger

and/or lemongrass for additional flavor. Pandan extract or tea
can also be sprayed around the house or on the body as a natural,
safe insect repellent.

Graviola (Annona muricata) is a small tropical evergreen fruit tree

that grows widely in tropical and subtropical regions around the
world. The fruits, known as soursop, have potent antioxidant and
anticancer properties and are widely used as food confectionaries.
Preparations of the bark, fruits, leaves, seeds, and roots are used in
traditional medicine to treat multiple ailments, including cancers.51

Ezekiel 47:12: “And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there
will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, nor
their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the
water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food,
and their leaves for healing.”

Over 200 bioactive ingredients have been reported in Graviola,

including annonaceous acetogenins, alkaloids, flavonoids, sterols,
and others, with anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-
microbial, and other health benefits. Specifically, annonaceous
acetogenins have been shown to be selectively toxic to cancer
cells, including multidrug-resistant cancer cell lines.51

Chapter 4: TOP 10 PROTOCOLS WE ENCOUNTERED IN OUR JOURNEY THROUGH ASIA 33

Leea indica (Burm.f.) is a large shrub that is traditionally used in
India, Malaysia,

Thailand, Nepal, and Indonesia for ailments such as diarrhea,

dysentery, diabetes, bone fracture, fever, and wound treatment.52

Lee indica contains many bioactive ingredients including alkaloids,

flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides, saponins, and steroids, with
antimicrobial, antioxidant, analgesic, antidiabetic, fat-lowering,
and antidiarrheal activities.

Promisingly, various extracts of Leea indica have been shown to

be very effective in preventing the growth of multiple types of
cancer cells in culture.52, 53, 54

VII Double Fermented Ginseng

A number of animal and human studies show that consumption of

Panax ginseng – also known as Asian ginseng, Chinese ginseng,
and Korean ginseng – significantly reduces the risk of developing
several types of cancer, including colorectal cancer, lung cancer,
gastric cancer, and liver cancer.55

Even the so-called “red” ginseng has been shown to have anticancer
properties. Further, American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), was
shown to help cancer patients substantially reduce their fatigue
levels.56

Panax ginseng is an important part of TCM, but Dr. Maruyama

takes it a step further by fermenting ginseng twice, first in lactic
acid and then in Aspergillus Oryzae. Known in English as Koji,
Aspergillus oryzae is a filamentous fungus or mold used in Chinese
and other East Asian cuisines to ferment soybeans for making soy
sauce and fermented bean paste.

Koji can also be used to ferment Chinese herbal medicines, making

them even more potent and more effective in fighting cancer. In
fact, double fermented ginseng is just one of many fermented
herbs that Dr. Maruyama uses to treat cancer. It’s a well-known
fact that fermentation makes herbs and foods healthier and greatly
benefits the immune system.

Fermented foods are chock full of good bacteria – not only probi-
otics, but prebiotics as well. Both pre- and probiotics boost levels
and activity of good gut flora and boost immune function, since
a significant portion of our immune system resides in our gut.
In fact, evidence shows that colon cancer may be triggered by a
“bad” human colonic bacteria.57

On the other hand, chemotherapy and drugs kills a lot of health-pro-

moting gut flora. If gut flora is important for your health, but chemo
kills gut flora leading to an unhealthy imbalance of gut bacteria,
how can chemotherapy be an effective method of extending the
life of cancer patients?

Health tip – Ginseng tea and supplements offer multiple health

benefits, including helping your body adapt better to stress.
Regular consumption of pre- and probiotic rich and fermented
foods enhances immunity.

VIII Artemisinin and Artesunate

Dr. Raymond Yuen from Singapore believes that cancer patients

are deficient in nutrients. If they are given the right nutrients, he
believes their immune systems will help them fight cancer and
other diseases better.

Dr. Yuen uses Artemisinin, a Chinese herb normally used to kill

malarial parasites, as an anticancer therapy. Malaria is caused by
a parasite that is transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes
and invades red blood cells.

Artemisinin, extracted from the plant Artemisia annua, also known

as sweet wormwood, is attracted to and reacts with high levels
of iron in the red blood cells. When it gets to the iron it forms an
oxide bridge and electrocutes the malarial parasite.

Interestingly, since cancer cells are also rich in iron, artemisinin

targets them as well. In fact, artemisinin has been shown to act
in multiple ways against cancer – including generating oxidative
stress responses, causing DNA damage, inducing various modes
of cell death, blocking angiogenesis (tumor blood supply) and
interfering with cancer-related signaling pathways.58

Chapter 4: TOP 10 PROTOCOLS WE ENCOUNTERED IN OUR JOURNEY THROUGH ASIA 35

Experimental evidences suggest that artemisinin and other syn-
thetic compounds derived from it – including Artesunate, which
has long used in TCM, traditional Thai medicine, and in Ayurvedic
medicine – are likely to prove very effective in treating highly
aggressive cancers without developing drug resistance.59 These
compounds also show synergy with other anticancer drugs, with-
out any increased toxicity toward normal cells.

IX Hyperthermia

Dr. Abdullah el Hosammi, Head of

Integrative Oncology of Verita Life
Asia-Pacific in Bangkok, confidently
states that local hyperthermia –
increasing the temperature of the
cancerous area to around 40 to 45
degrees C – is an effective anti-can-
cer treatment.

Scientific evidence shows that

temperatures between 40 and 44
degrees C are toxic for cells in an
environment with a low oxygen, par-
tial pressure and low pH, conditions
that are found specifically within
tumour tissue, due to insufficient
blood supply.60

Along with killing cancer cells directly, hyperthermia also reduces

the resistance of the cancer to chemotherapy, radiation, and
alternative treatments. According to Dr. Hosammi, local as well
as full-body hyperthermia always improves the outcome for a
cancer patient.

In local hyperthermia, the temperature is extremely high and kills

cancer cells directly. On the other hand, in whole body hyperther-
mia the temperature is between 38 to 39 degrees C, which acts
to activate and enhance the immune system.

Phase III randomized clinical trials show that hyperthermia, when

used along with radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery, increases

36 Creation vs Chemicals: An In-Depth Look at Eastern vs. Western Medicine by Ty & Charlene Bollinger
both local control and overall survival and allows low-dosage treat-
ment of cancers along with reduced toxicity.61 In fact, according
to the University Hospital of Verona Radiotherapy Department,
hyperthermia is nothing less than the fourth pillar of cancer ther-
apy along with surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.

Health tip – Regular hot baths and visits to the sauna are a great
way to gain the many health benefits of hyperthermia.

X Acupuncture Therapy Against

Cancer Stem Cells

Back in 2003, researchers from the University of Michigan were

the first to identify cancer stem cells in solid tumors. Cancer stem
cells are capable of self-renewal, differentiation, and forming new A SPECIAL TYPE

According to Dr. Pan Chung, a special type of acupuncture ther-
apy can help to remove cancer stem cells, allowing patients to
undergo whatever therapy they want, while also making such
therapies more effective.

The ancient Chinese discovered energetic pathways, known as

meridians. Qi, loosely translated as “energy” or “life force”, travels
through specific points on the skin that are connected to body
organs. If there is a weakness or a blockage in the flow of Qi, it
leads to illness and disease.

Acupuncture was designed to strengthen and balance the Qi,

returning the body back to normal homeostasis, or a state of
being in balance.

According to Dr. Pan Chung, for the special acupuncture therapy

to work, the patient’s body needs to be aligned with the sun so
that it can get neutrino energy from sunlight. It takes 8 minutes
and 20 seconds for sunlight to travel all the way from the sun to
the earth.

Even if the cancer has grown large, or if it has migrated to other

areas of the body, when the patient receives neutrino energy from
sunlight, all the toxins and all the cancer cells come to 4 specific
acupuncture points. According to Dr. Pan Chung, once the acu-
puncturist needles and manipulates those 4 points, the patient
will excrete cancer stem cells in their urine half an hour later.

The success rate of this unique approach is truly remarkable. Out

of hundreds of patients treated with this form of special acupunc-
ture therapy, the mortality rate was less than one percent!

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION
Good health is, without any doubt, our greatest
asset.

Traditional systems of Eastern medicine, including TCM and

Ayurveda, although very good at treating disease, prefer to main-
tain good health on a daily basis rather than waiting to fix disease
when it happens.

Both reject a disease-based mindset and instead seek to maintain

good health through preventive dietary and lifestyle practices.
Both emphasize the benefits of conscious living in which our inner
selves are aligned with the outer world.

Traditional Eastern medicine and Western medicine coexist in

peace in many South Asian countries. However, in the U.S., con-
ventional therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation are
routinely used to treat cancer in spite of their poor track record.

Most American physicians are well trained in prescribing patented

medicines, but remain ignorant of the healing properties of many
hundreds, if not thousands, of alternative therapies available all
over the world.

The sad truth is that most of the medical profession in the U.S.
today exists to serve the pharmaceutical industry. How else can we
explain chemotherapy, which recommends the use of debilitating
toxins as a therapy against cancer?

Fortunately for us, the news is not all grim.

As this 7-part video series documenting The Truth About Cancer’s

journey through Asia shows, all hope is not lost.

We hope you will join us on this exciting journey through the lands
of the East and learn more about all the promising new therapies
against cancer!
