(The relationship between working overtime and knowledge sharing in the food catering
service industry - with work stress as the mediator) Service industry is one of the most
popular industries over the world. Due to the industry’s characteristic, working overtime has
been prevalent trend in many organizations in this industry. According to published studies,
the average working overtime per month in service industry in Japan is 14 hours, in Taiwan
is 16.5 hours and especially in South Korea is 27.4 hours. This issue has become a
significant problem for many organizations over the world that effect to stakeholders such as
their health and their daily lives. I have worked as an human resource manager at Antuna
Company, a food catering in service industry. Therefore, in order to avoid this issue
happening in my company, the aim of this report is to identify the benefits and harms of
working overtime and its impacts on stakeholders. Several potential solutions will be
recommended in the last part of this report in order to balance the employee’s benefits and
organizational productivity.

Working long hours is commonplace for employees in any industry in both developed and
developing countries over the world (Employee). Standard working hours that defined by
International Labor Organization (ILO) is no more than 48 hours per week. However, the
percentage of employees working more hours was 30.7% in South Korea, 16.4% in the
United State and 28.8% in Singapore based on ILO statistics in 2013. Thus, the questions
are posed: How it benefits to organizations, individual employee and public?

perspective, several studies demonstrate that although the employees have to working
overtime, they still find job satisfaction and the balance between work and life. However,
there is no study that could demonstrate any benefits of long hour working without extra
payment to employees.

On working over issue, the benefits are typically skewed employers and organizations.

The Harms of Working Overtime on Stakeholders

For employees, (productivity) stated that there is a link between working hours and health
problems. Many people start to work before breakfast as their habits. It leads to harmful their
health and relatively unproductive work. One study showed that those employees who work
for long hours are more likely to an absent from work.
