Rationale for Standard 4: Content Knowledge 
Artifact name:  Notes on Envisions 

Standard:  
The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the 
discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the 
discipline accessible and meaningful for learners.  
What the Standard means to me: 
The content knowledge is what drives the lessons, and the teacher needs to understand the 
different concepts he/she is teaching. After it is understood what is being taught then it can be 
implemented in a meaningful and accessible way for each learner.  

Indicator: 
4 (g) Uses supplementary resources and technologies effectively to ensure accessibility and 
relevance to all learners. 

Description of the artifact:  
Envisions is the math program that the district uses for each student. Just this year, the program 
changed up how they did things and the teachers have been frustrated with the new changes 
and not knowing how to utilize the material. We have had a lot of professional development on 
this program and these changes. In this particular meeting, we were talking about the different 
things that this program has to offer and how we can utilize them to best support our learners. I 
took this opportunity to familiarize myself with the math content so I could support my second 
graders through this material. I wanted to be able to use this program as a resource so I could 
reach all of the learners in my class.  

Rationale: 
I show proficiency in this standard and indicator because I am using envisions as a resource in 
order to support learners, as well as, make it accessible for each individual. In order for me to 
use this program as a meaningful resource, I really needed to get it broken down for me and 
taught how to best utilize it. By participating in this professional development and taking 
notes, I was able to dive deeper into the content knowledge and use various strategies to reach 
all of the learners in the classroom. I knew it was important for students to be talking about 
math, but I never really knew how to get them to do this. By learning about the solve and share 
that envisions provides I was able to get my students to interact and talk about their math more 
frequently and in meaningful ways. It is important to use the curriculum in your district or 
school not as a complete guide or script, but as a meaningful resource, and this meeting and 
notes taught me that.
