BASIC CONCEPTS
Noise is to be understood as every kind of sound, which is undesired, disturbs, or irritates, and
which decreases physical, psychological, or social well-being. In modern society road traffic noise
is probably the most significant of the environmental noise sources. Traffic noise consists of
vehicular engine noise and tire noise from contact with the roadway surfaces. This traffic generated
sound waves can be described by two basic parameters; frequency and amplitude. Frequency refers
to the number of waves produced within a given time period, expressed in units of cycles per
second. Amplitude is the energy level or loudness of a sound wave, expressed in units called
decibels (dB). Traffic noise can vary considerably over short time periods. The unit for traffic
generated noise is decibel ‘A’ weightage (dB(A)) for indoor and decibel ‘C’ weightage (dB(C)) for
outdoor respectively. Both are called as Frequency Weighting. Noise also can be classified into 4
different types of noise which is steady state, fluctuating, impulsive and intermittent noise. For
example, Intermittent noise is a noise level that increases and decreases rapidly. This might be a
freight train passing by, factory equipment that operates in cycles or aircraft overhead. Impulsive
noise is most commonly associated with the construction and demolition industry. This sudden
burst of noise can startle you by its fast and surprising nature. Impulsive noises are commonly
created by explosions or construction equipment such as pile drivers.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
UiTM Shah Alam is known to be one of the busiest campus. With the increase of students’
enrolment, high traffic volume is expected surrounding the campus and this significantly contribute
to noise pollution. High noise level from the traffic will cause disturbance to learning process in
classroom. Perform a relevant experiment to determine the noise level from traffic and identify the
effects to learning process in classroom.
