Terms and Definitions

Tympanometry – an examination used to test the condition of the


middle ear and mobility of the eardrum.

Skin prick test- Skin is exposed to suspected allergy-causing substances


and is observed for signs of an allergic reaction.

Allergen- a substance which can cause an allergic reaction.

Allergen immunotherapy- series of injections, sprays, or drops are


administrated which contain the allergen to which the patient is
allergic.

Allergic reaction- an adverse reaction involving the immune system


which is inhaling, swallowing or touching a substance to which a person
is allergic.

Allergic rhinitis- an inflammation of the lining of the nose caused by


inhaling an allergen such as dust mite , pollen, animal dander, and
eating certain foods.

Anaphylaxis- The most severe type of allergic reaction resulting in life


threatening symptoms.

Antibodies- substances produced by the body to protect itself against


infection.

Antihistamines- medications which block the action of histamine .

Histamine- a substance occurring in mast cells in the body.
