11. A)(i) Define conduction, convection and radiation. (3 M)

(ii) Derive general heat conduction equation in Cartesian coordinates. (7 M)

12. A)(i) A steam pipe is covered with two layers of insulation, the first layer being 3 cm
thick (k = 0.17 W/m K) and the second is of 5 cm thick (k = 0.09 W/m K).The pipe is made
of steel (k = 56 W/m K) having an I.D. of 160 mm and O.D.of 170 mm.The inside and
outside convection heat transfer coefficients are 30 W/m2 K and 6 W/m2 K respectively.
Calculate heat loss per meter length of pipe if the steam is flowing at a temperature of
250 o C and ambient air is at 30 o C. (5 M)
(ii) An aluminum fin(k = 200 W/m K) of 3.5 mm thick , 20 cm long and 1m wide is having base
temperature of 350 o C .The ambient air is at 50 o C with convection heat transfer coefficient of
10 W/m2 o C. Considering fin to be a long fin ,Calculate (i)Heat transfer rate(ii)Fin
effectiveness(iii)Fin efficiency. (5 M)

12. B)(i)Heat is generated at a constant rate of 4 x 108 W/m3 in a copper(k = 386 W/m K) rod
o
of radius of 0.5 cm .The rod is exposed to ambient air which is at 30 C with
convection heat transfer coefficient of 2000 W/m2 o C. Calculate (i) Temperature at the
surface of rod (ii) Temperature at the center of the rod.

(ii).A large aluminum plate (ρ = 7865 kg/m3 ,Cp = 0.896 kJ/kg o C and k = 204 W/m o C) of thickness 0.1 m
initially at 250 o C, is cooled by exposing it to ambient air which is at 40 o C with convection heat
transfer coefficient of 80 W/m2 o C. Using lumped system analysis estimate the time required to
cool the plate from 250 o C to 50 o C. (5 M)
13. A)(i) Using dimensional analysis, show that for forced convection, Nu = f (Re,Pr).

(ii).A horizontal plate of 1.5 m is maintained at a temperature of 50 o C. Air at 30 o C is flowing
over a plate at a velocity of 0.5 m/s. Calculate velocity and thermal boundary layer thicknesses at
distance of 1 m from the trailing edge. (4M)

13. B)(i)A vertical plate of 0.6 m by 0.5 m with one surface insulated and the other surface is
at a uniform temperature of 100 o C is exposed to an ambient air which is at 20 oC.Estimate
the heat transfer rate from the plate.(Use Nu = 0.59[Gr.Pr]0.25 ) (6 M)

(ii) Draw the development of boundary layer over a flat plate under forced convections.(4M)
14. A)(i) Draw and explain various regimes of a pool boiling curve. (5 M)
(ii).A two shell pass, four tube pass heat exchanger is used to heat water with hot exhaust gases.
Water (Cp = 4180 J/kg K) enters the tubes at the rate of 10 kg/s at a temperature of 30 o C and
leaves at 80 oC.Hot exhaust gases enters the shell side at 130 o C and leaves at 80 oC.The total
heat transfer surface area is 800 m2 .Calculate overall heat transfer coefficient by using LMTD
approach. (5 M)

14. B)(i)Steam at atmospheric pressure condenses on 0.5 m by 0.5 m vertical plate
maintained at a uniform temperature of 40oC.Calculate (i) Heat transfer coefficient (ii)
Rate of condensation of steam.

(ii).A single pass counter flow heat exchanger is used to cool hot mercury
(Cp = 1370 J/kg K) from 110 o C to 70 o C which is flowing at the rate of 1 kg/s by using water (Cp
= 4180 J/kg K) entering at 30 o C flowing at the rate of 0.2 kg/s.The mean overall heat transfer
coefficient is 250 W/m2 o C.By using ε – NTU approach ,calculate the heat transfer surface area
required and exit temperature of the water. (6M)

15. A)(i)State and prove Kirchhoff’s law. (4 M)


(ii)Assuming the sun to be a black body having surface temperature of 5600 o C, calculate
(i)Total emissive power (ii) Wavelength at which the maximum spectral intensity occurs (iii) The
maximum monochromatic emissive power (iv)Monochromatic emissive power at a wavelength of
1.1µ m.(v)Rate of energy emitted by the sun if its diameter is assumed as 1.39x109 m.

concept of radiative heat exchange between two black surfaces.
