Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death
and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the

Lesson Acts 10:34-43
Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in
every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You
know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—
he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after
the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the
Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were
oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both
in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God
raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us
who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose
from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the
one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about
him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Hymn of Praise Christ Our Passover Will C. MacFarlane

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us, therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with
the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being
raised from the dead dieth no more: death hath no more dominion over Him. For in that He died, He
died unto sin once; but in that He liveth, He liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be
dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ is risen from the dead,
and become the first fruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the
resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Alleluia!

Gospel Mark 16:1-8
Before the Gospel
Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ
according to Mark.
People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and
Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the
first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been
saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the
tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had
already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in
a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do
not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been
raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples
and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he
told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had
seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Homily The Rector

A brief period of silence follows the Homily. The congregation then stands at the lead of the Celebrant.

Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is — seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People From Washington Cathedral

Rejoicing in the resurrection of Christ, let us remember in prayer the Church, the
world, and all those in need saying, For Christ is risen.
Christ is risen indeed!
For the whole bright earth, so lovingly created and compassionately redeemed,
that it may speak of the glory and majesty of God. For Christ is risen.
Christ is risen indeed!

–8–
For the Church, whose life is hid with Christ in God, that in all its diversity, witness
may be made to one Lord, one faith, one baptism. For those who have been baptized
and all who renew their baptismal vows, that they may walk in newness of life. For
Christ is risen.
Christ is risen indeed!
For those who govern and hold authority in the nations, that they may be led to
govern with equity and justice, bringing life to those in the shadow of death. For Christ
is risen.
Christ is risen indeed!
For all who suffer in mind, body, or soul, for whom Christ is risen, that they may be
healed and comforted. For Christ is risen.
Christ is risen indeed!
For all who have died, and for all who grieve, that in Christ who triumphs over death,
they may find light perpetual and blessed assurance. For Christ is risen.
Christ is risen indeed!
For all gathered this day, that we may be freed from fear and renewed in faith. Bless
those who seek to know your love, and all who come to your holy table. For Christ is
risen.
Christ is risen indeed!
The Celebrant says
Joining our voices with the faithful in every time and place, we offer our prayers to you,
O God, rejoicing in the presence of the risen Lord, your son our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Easter is more than a Sunday. It is actually a seven-week season of the church year, the Great Fifty Days
that begin at sundown the evening before Easter Day (when we celebrate the Great Vigil of Easter) and
lasts for six more Sundays until the Day of Pentecost. These weeks of celebration will be dramatically
different from the solemnity of Lent. Because Easter focuses on our new life in Christ, our liturgy reflects this
joy. We stand for prayer throughout the service, and we omit the General Confession that normally follows
the Prayers of the People. Of course, personal confession to God is always appropriate and may be made
before our worship begins.
The Peace
Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People And also with you.

Anthem
—At the 7:30 service—

Risen with Christ Erik Routley
Come, let us with our Lord arise, our Lord Who made both earth and skies, Who died to save the world
He made, and rose triumphant from the dead. He rose, the Prince of Life and Peace, and stamped the
day forever His. This is the day the Lord hath made, that all may see His power displayed, may feel His
resurrection’s power, and rise again to fall no more, in perfect righteousness renewed and filled with all
the life of God. Then let us render Him His own; with solemn prayer approach the throne, with meekness
hear the Gospel word, with thanks His dying love record. Our joyful hearts and voices raise and fill his
courts with songs of praise. [Charles Wesley]
—At the 9:00 and 11:00 services—
If Ye Then Be Risen with Christ Charles Villiers Stanford
Instrumental parts H. Pysher
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth at the right hand
of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things of the earth, for ye are dead and your life is hid
with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
Hallelujah! [Colossians 3:1–4]

The Great Thanksgiving, Eucharistic Prayer C

– 10 –
The Celebrant proceeds
God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.
Glory to you for ever and ever.
At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies,
suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.
By your will they were created and have their being.
From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with
memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against
you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.
Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.
Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed
your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a
woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood,
he reconciled us.
By his wounds, we are healed.
And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles,
and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to
proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:
Sanctus and Benedictus Richard Proulx

The congregation remains standing, and the Celebrant continues

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and ade a new people by water
and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to
be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it,
and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel
containing wine to be consecrated.

– 11 –
On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and
gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do
this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you:
This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of
thanksgiving,
We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.
Lord God of our holy and righteous forebears, redeemer and mother of Israel, God
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the
world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace
only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this
Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve
the world in his name.
Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.
Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship,
from generation to generation.
 Richard Proulx

Celebrant
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Celebrant and People
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our
trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever
and ever. Amen.

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Behold who you are; become what you receive.
Communion
All baptized Christians are invited to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist. This is the Lord’s table. It is the Lord who
invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward
at the direction of the ushers to the stations at the Chancel steps, or, if unable to do so, inform an usher that you need
communion brought to you in your pew. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting
hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the
wine. If you would like to receive a blessing instead, go to the stations and simply cross your arms across your chest.
Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. Gluten-free wafers are available;
let the priest know when you go up to receive.

Hymn 713 Christ Is Arisen Christ Is Arisen
Anthem The Day of Resurrection Thomas Matthews
The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; the Passover of gladness, the Passover of God. From
death to life eternal, from earth unto the sky, our Christ hath brought us over with hymns of victory.
Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of resurrection light;
and, listening to His accents, may hear so calm and plain His own “All hail!” and hearing, may raise
the victor strain. Now let the heavens be joyful, let earth her song begin, the round world keep high
triumph, and all that is therein; let all things seen and unseen their notes together blend, for Christ
the Lord is risen, our joy that hath no end. Alleluia!

Celebrant and People
Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the
most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us
in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of
your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to
do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to
the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Easter Blessing

May Almighty God, who has redeemed us and made us his children through the
resurrection of his Son our Lord, bestow upon you the riches of his blessing. Amen.
May God, who through the water of baptism has raised us from sin into newness of
life, make you holy and worthy to be united with Christ for ever. Amen.
May God, who has brought us out of bondage to sin into true and lasting freedom in
the Redeemer, bring you to your eternal inheritance. Amen.

of $2,200,000) enable sound financial planning for Bethesda’s mission and ministry. If you have not
yet received a pledge card, you may contact Turia Roebuck-Hayden in the office at (561) 655-4555
x110 or at turia@bbts.org. If you would like to make a pledge you may mail, drop off a pledge card,
call the office, or complete the online form at bbts.org/give/annual-commitments.

Easter Eucharist & Luncheon for the Homebound
Thursday, April 5 | 11:00 a.m.
Some seniors and handicapped persons cannot attend an Easter service. It may be too
crowded or too hard to park. We refer to these as homebound—even if they are not always
homebound. If you or someone you know fits this description, please be our guest at this
special Easter service. We will need help with all aspects of the event from registration and
helping guests. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact April at (561) 655-
4554 x112 or e-mail her at april@bbts.org.

Join us for
Spring Town Hall Meeting
Sunday, April 8 | 9:50 a.m. | Parish Hall East
As the season and program year wind down at Bethesda-by-the-Sea, join the Rector,
Wardens, and Associates as we reflect back on the 2017-2018 year and look ahead
toward the summer and the upcoming year that begins in September.
