Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: I will have the students work in pairs in order to maintain sustainability or by themselves for
individual choice. I will explain how butterflies and humans (us) are similar because they develop in a cycle.
Representation: I will use real life pictures and videos to show the realization of the life cycle of a butterfly
Action and Expression: Students will be able to create their own timeline of the life cycle of a butterfly.

Lesson idea implementation: To begin the lesson we will be discussing nature and how everything has a life
cycle. I will also explain the difference between living things and none living things to make sure the kids have
a clear understanding before going any further. I will then explain how only living things have a life cycle. Ex:
plants, animals, trees etc. I will then introduce the butterfly and ask if any of the students know any parts of
the life cycle of the butterfly. After the discussion I will then use my interactive SMART board and open up
Timeline through readwritethink and go through the different steps of the butterflies lifestyle and show them
my example. The students will then go on a computer or IPad and create their own e-book about an animal of
their choice. It does not have to be a butterfly.

To conclude the lesson I will evaluate the E-books of each student to see how well they understand. If some
of the students do not understand I will work with them one on one and assist them. To extend my lesson to
a higher learning, I will bring in real life examples. A caterpillar, I will try to find a cocoon, and a butterfly and
explain it that way. When bringing in real life objects, it can give kids a greater understanding.

Reflective Practice: This activity can impact student learning in many ways. First they know how to create a
timeline and how a timeline works as well as how to create an e-book. . They will also get more experience in
nature and how the cycles of life work outside of humans. Their vocabulary will be enriched as well. To
further extend this lesson, I would have an expert in animal or bug life cycles come in and give a more
detailed description and explanation as well as to answer and questions I may not be able to answer. A field

how they survive.
