Throughout the passage, Aloma, goes through different experiences and she responds to

them in particular ways. Aloma’s character and her attitude is developed over the course of the
text. The author of the text use multiple literary elements to convey Aloma’s response to the
changing environment that she lives in. The author uses literary elements such as, imagery to
create a vivid image of the environment that Aloma was living in, utilized the element of
repetition, and diction in combination with detail, to convey Aloma’s responses to the changing
environment that she lived in.
The author employs imagery to create a clear picture of Aloma’s experiences throughout
the text. According to the text it states, “When she arrived at the school, Aloma shared a small
concrete room with two other girls and here too the mountain walls staggered and threatened up
over them all. The sun did not appear in the wound of the holler.” The author explains Aloma’s
environment while she is in school. The school appears to not receive as much sunlight as other
areas do because of the mountains. The text progresses to states, “It was a chasmed world
without the twin ceremonies of morning and evening.” This shows how the area in which Aloma
is living in does not naturally receive the light of the sun as most of world does. This could make
it less inviting to live in. By describing the environment as the author did, Aloma does not live
like she did with her family, it is a much different environment.
The author utilizes repetition to add to the depth of Aloma’s response to her environment.
The passage states, “That was what she wanted. That more than family, that more than
friendship, that more than love. Just the kind of day that couldn’t be recalled into premature
darkness by the land.” This particular quote in the passage is highly important in the
development of Aloma’s character. By repeating the word “that” the author is implying that
becoming an adult and being free is one of Aloma’s dreams. Aloma does not want to live in the
shadows anymore, both figuratively and literally. Aloma at a young age, recognizes the
importance of becoming older and she would love to grow up and experience things on her own.
The description here is important because she wants this more than anything, more than family
and over love. At this point in time, Aloma is disappointed with how she is living. The
environment in which she is living is not satisfying for her.
According to the passage, it states, “Aloma lived in this dark place, a dark county in a
dark state.” Not only is this quote an example of imagery, but also repetition as well. The line
alone, provides more insight into the type of environment Aloma presides in. By constantly
referring to the area as being “dark” the author is showing how Aloma has this urge to become
free. This quote appears directly before the quote mentioned in the paragraph above. This quote
was important to mention because it shows what led to Aloma wanting to become and adult and
be free. Aloma believes the Sun and its light to be beautiful, however, she is young and she
cannot go out on her own into the world. This paragraph in the text shows Aloma’s aspiration to
be free and explore the world and appreciate its beauty compared to where she is currently
living.
Morgan uses detail along with diction to reveal Aloma’s complex responses to her
environment. In the text it states, “She wondered what kind of luck was required to be someone
other than the person you were born to be.” When going to school, Aloma reflects to herself.
Aloma wanting to understand a different purpose in life. This entire line is a detail that is
imperative to Aloma’s character. The quote implies that she does not feel as though she living to
her full potential. Aloma wishes to be someone else. This is builds on the idea earlier of wanting
to live a different lifestyle, one that’s more free and an individual get to choose for themselves.
Another important detail which was in the final paragraph of the text states, “They
contained the sound in a too-small box of predictable chords… She always wanted more than she
was given.” This quote sums up Aloma’s response to her chiang environments because it builds
on the those emotions Aloma displayed earlier in the text by showing how eager she is to do
more, to be more specific, Aloma may not exactly be a greedy person, but more of an explorative
person. Being in a location that is repetitive, dark and dull, has developed Aloma into one who
wants to do different things.
In conclusion, Aloma experiences away from home and at school in the dark area she
presided in, had to different experiences. Aloma did not exactly have an optimistic response to
her changing environment. Aloma appeared to more of a reflective thinker; she wondered how
differently life would be if she was someone else, or if she was older. Aloma wanted to live
freely and step out of life’s shadow. The author used multiple literary elements to communicate
Amola’s responses to a changing environment by showing how she reacted when she was not in
her comfort zone.
