EARTHQUAKES IN PAKISTAN FROM 2004 TO
ONWARDS

MAGNITUDE
On January 31, 2018, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted various parts of Pakistan, including
Quetta, Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Charsadda, Murree, Sargodha, Shangla, Haripur
and Gujranwala.

ORIGIN
According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake, which was also
felt in parts of India and Kashmir, was 35 kilometers south of Jarm in Afghanistan. The depth of
the quake was estimated to be 191.2km, USGS added.

DAMAGE
1 death occurred in this incident and 9-11 people injured.

MAGNITUDE
A 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit parts of Balochistan including Gwadar, Makran and Pasni.
Residents of the affected areas were woken up and ran out of their houses in fear and shock.

ORIGIN
According to USGS, the epicenter of the quake was located 20 kilometers west southwest of
Pasni at a depth of 25.9km.

DAMAGE
The quake struck Gwadar, Makran and Pasni at 3:04am. However, no damage or casualties
have been reported.

MAGNITUDE
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake jolted parts of khyber pakhtunkhaw and Punjab, causing fear and
panic among residents who vacated buildings for the duration of the almost ‘three-minute-long
quake.’

ORIGIN
According to Pakistan’s MeT department the earthquake epicentre was in the Hindu Kush
region in Afghanistan. Its depth was 236 km underneath the surface of earth.
DAMAGE
Six people – five in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa one in Gilgit-Baltistan – died from landslides, said a
spokesman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). At least 20 houses were
damaged due to the quake.

MAGNITUDE
A strong earthquake measuring 7.7 magnitude struck major cities of Pakistan, including the
northern areas. Strong tremors were also felt in Kabul and New Delhi.

ORIGIN
The main earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 212.5 km, with its epicenter
approximately 82 km southeast of Feyzabad, Afghanistan.

DAMAGE
The quake, which lasted at least one minute, shook buildings in Islamabad, Kabul and New
Delhi, sending people rushing into the streets.

MAGNITUDE
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has struck northeast Afghanistan near the country's borders with
Pakistan and Tajikistan, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS)
Origin
The USGS said Saturday morning's earthquake was at a depth of 203km and centred 82km
southeast of the town of Feyzabad, capital of the Afghan province of Badakhshan.
DAMAGE
It is not clear if there were any casualties in the area itself, but at least 17 people were injured
in the Pakistani city of Peshawar. In Peshawar some old homes and walls collapsed, Hamid
Nawaz, the head of Pakistan's disaster management authority, told AP.

MAGNITUDE
A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the Pakistani province of Sindh on May 8.
ORIGIN
8km SSE of Daur, Pakistan with a depth of 14.7 km.
DAMAGE
The earthquake killed two people and another 50 were wounded.Fortunately no damage to the
houses took place.

MAGNITUDE
District Awaran in Balochistan Province struck by an Earthquake of 7.8 magnitude (USGS).
The earthquake shocks were felt across Sindh and media reports indicate even upto India. It
also triggered eruption of a small mud volcano, forming a small new island of the south coast of
Pakistan.
ORIGIN
It had a focal depth of 10 km at Mashakai Awaran Balochistan.
DAMAGE
At least 348 deaths and affecting over 300,000 people. Awaran and Kech districts were hit the
hardest, with 21,000 houses reportedly damaged and the communication system disrupted in
the remote and sparsely populated area.

A strong earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude hit Quetta, with tremors felt in different parts of
Pakistan, Iran, India and some gulf countries.

ORIGIN
The epicentre of the earthquake lay in the Sarawan area of Iran which lies close to Pak-Iran
border.
DAMAGE

About 34 people were reported killed while 80 were reported to be injured with some 10,000
houses damaged as a result of the quake.

The epicentre of the earthquake lay 90 kilometres from Quetta in Achakzai area of Ziarat
District. No casualties were reported.

Mild shocks of earthquake jolted various parts of Khaber Pakhtunkwa and federal capital. The
magnitude of the quake was recorded as 4.7 magnitude.
ORIGIN
Its epicentre was 41 kilometres deep and 64 kilometres north west of Mansehra. No lives were
lost.
