When first researching about the library on their website I found the How-to videos very
helpful. I think they are helpful and a useful tool for a new student who wants to learn more
about what the library has to offer them. I found the “Avoiding Plagiarism” video the most useful
because my worst fear is to get caught with plagiarizing someone else's work when it was not
intended. During my visit to the library, I checked out the book titled Quick Questions in
Sport-Related Concussion. The book was Edited by Eric L. Sauers. I chose this book in
particular to check out because I find concussions very fascinating. In high school I did a project
on Chronic traumatic Encephalopathy and I find concussions to be just as interesting.
I have been to the Atkins Library a few times before my visit for this studio. My visit
compared to my past times by this visit being more directive. I say it was more directive because
you gave us instructions on what to do rather than me just going to the library to do homework
or study. I like the library here on campus a lot but it is way different than any library I have ever
been to before. It is so much bigger being that there are ten floors, with a ton of books and a lot
of tables and chairs. This library compares to my high school library by one being bigger, and
two, more spread out. There is a ton of space for people to spread out and do their work
independently and quietly. There are also very convenient study rooms for students to take
advantage of when needed. Plus, no high school library has a view of the Charlotte skyline.
Since I went to the library over the weekend, there was very few students there,
especially since it is still the beginning of the school year. But the few students who were their
were utilizing the table spaces for studying and the computers for homework assignments. I did
not see many people reading books from the library but that did not really surprise me because
most resources are found online nowadays. I think our library is very nice but I do think some
furniture need to be replaced. I would say the library looks very outdated in the sense that the
furniture is not well kept up with. I really like the idea of whiteboard tables that are offered at NC
State. I think it would be both cool and useful to have those in our library. But other then a few
furniture updates, I think the library is kept up pretty well. I think the library plays a big role in the
sense of community on campus. There are fun spaces and eating places on campus like the
Student Union, Prospector, and SoVi. On the contrary there is the main studious place being the
Atkins Library. I think the four of these places play a big role in the community of UNCC. They
are all spaces to be with friends and hang out. The library in particular is a very important space
in the community because it provides the students with tools for them to excel in their classes. I
mean it is practically in the center of the main campus. My favorite place in the library was the
ground floor. I enjoy this part of the library the most because it is the most relaxing being that it
is where Peet's Coffee is located. I feel like this floor would be more beneficial if it was the first
floor because I feel like it is very updated and cozy. This floor has the best furniture and a useful
quiet study room.
I feel like I will not use the library that much this semester because I prefer to just study
in my room. I like to do my homework and studying in my room because this is where the least
amount of distractions are. I do not have to worry about people talking around me or walking
past my table every five minutes. Overall, I do like the library and what it has to offer but I prefer
to only go there during finals week.
