The Rainforest World Music Festival 2018

The Rainforest World Music Festival one of the biggest musical festival in Borneo island conducted by
Sarawak Government through Sarawak tourism department and partner with various private and public
bodies. Since 1998, this event run successfully and participant and visitors are flooded all over the world,
The three-day festival is the first and largest event of its kind in Malaysia, bringing cultural artistes from
the island of Borneo and beyond, with performers from every corner of the globe.
The Festival begins at 10am with health and wellness programmes that incorporate cultural health
activities such as meditation, yoga and tai chi, as well as more modern activities like Zumba. The
afternoon is filled with interactive workshops with ethno-musical themes and demonstrations, where the
audience can experience the traditional dances and musical instruments first hand from the performers
themselves, while at night the Jungle and Tree stages are filled with exciting concert performances.
Fringe events take place throughout the Festival like the Rainforest World Craft Bazaar and the Food and
Village Mart, where one can purchase the local arts, crafts and cuisine of Borneo as well as the Pustaka
Bookaroo, which combines music, stories and crafts from around the world in workshops for children
aged between seven and 12.
As a part of the greening initiative, the Festival now requires all vendors to use biodegradable tableware
and also implements a waste management programme, with recycling and food waste bins throughout the
festival site to collect and later process the waste into organic chicken feed, topsoil and biodiesel. The
Festival also holds tree planting activities in nearby nature reserves annually in order to ensure the
environmental sustainability of the event as well as to increase environmental awareness among the
public.
The Festival is the first and largest event of its kind in Malaysia and will take place on July 13 to 15. The
Festival’s venue is the Sarawak Cultural Village, popularly known as the ‘living’ museum which takes up
a sprawling 17 acres of land at the foot of Mount Santubong, roughly 35km north of Kuching.
Aerial View of the Damai Peninsular – a prime tourist destination 40-min drive out of Kuching. There are
three beach resorts, a 18-hole golf course, a boutique hideaway and a few homestay operators for your
accommodation needs. The peninsular is also home to the Gunung (Mt.) Santubong National Park and
fringes the Kuching Wetland Areas – a RAMSAR site. Interesting activities include a hike up Mt.
Santubong, watch Irrawaddy Dolphins, crocodiles or fireflies. The Sarawak Cultural Village, an award-
winning living museum, is nestled at the foot of the legendary Mt. Santubong.
The festival ground has been expanded to include Damai Central (beach side of the map) where two new
stages are; the Amphitheatre and The Big Tent. Nestled at the foot of Mount Santubong, the Sarawak
Cultural Village is just 35km from Kuching City. The festival takes place among the traditional houses of
Sarawak’s many tribes and pristine nature of Sarawak’s rain forests.
The festival site also sets up a variety of food and drink stalls, an arts and crafts area as well as a counter
for festival memorabilia, Sarawak souvenirs and CDs by the performing artists, all this contributing to a
fun filled, wholesome festival experience. World Music plus a country fair atmosphere in the midst of
lush greenery. The Rainforest World Music Festival, a not-to-be-missed occasion, guarantees a smashing
time in the heart of the Borneo Jungle.

This time round, festival ticket holders will get free shuttle ride to and from the Sarawak Cultural Village
drop-off and pick-up point. For non-ticket holders a nominal bus fare is collected, for adult’s seven ringgit
Malaysia and for children only four ringgit Malaysia is collected as bus fare.
133 volunteers will have the experience to be part of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) team.
They were selected from over 300 applications submitted to the Sarawak Tourism Board. The RWMF
volunteer programme is designed to provide volunteers with a learning platform on the teamwork and
operational aspects of event organising, as well as to ensure the success of the event.
The applications were vetted according to their special skills, education background and previous
volunteering experiences. Although the assignment will vary from role to role, all volunteers must be able
to conduct themselves in line with the Festival’s core values, such as integrity, discipline and teamwork.
Volunteers will assist organizers in traffic control, gate control, survey and questionnaire collection, artist
liaising and ‘schlepping’, while others are stationed at the media centre, secretariat, and merchandise
booth. Those in traffic control and gate control will have the chance to work closely with the police,
RELA and organising officers to ensure the orderliness and security of the Festival, while volunteers
working with secretariat assist with event operations such as performer transfers, accommodations, meals
and wristband distribution.
Volunteers assisting the media centre are involved with media management and the distribution of media
and photographer passes, wristbands and press releases, as well as manning the computer area where the
media can access the internet and event photo galleries.
Survey and questionnaire collection volunteers are active throughout the festival grounds, gathering
opinions of the festival goers throughout the day concerning the different activities at the festival.
Volunteers stationed at the merchandise booth assist organizing staff with the performers’ music and
memorabilia, while liaison officers manage the performers’ movements, assisting them in completing
their sound tests, mini sessions, performances and press meetings. “Schleppers” known as the Ravens are
the backbone of the festival, tasked with assisting in the setup of the instruments during mini sessions and
concerts throughout the entire festival, especially during the concerts.
Volunteers are provided with an allowance, festival T-Shirt, transportation and lodging close to the
Festival area. The organising team and volunteers gather at the Festival area a day before the Festival on
July 12 for task assignment and to prepare for the following day.
The event is supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Ministry of Tourism, Arts,
Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak and endorsed by Tourism Malaysia with Malaysia Airlines Berhad as
the presenting sponsor and other working partners are Airasia, Grab Car, Sarawak Energy, Putra
Malaysia, Tags Spin and Joint Specialist.
The three days event was memorable and unique experience for the music lovers and adventurers and this
event is getting popular day by day, at beginning it started with 600 visitors in 2000 and increased to
16000 visitors in 2016 and will be more in coming years.
