1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Project Overview
Medco Energy (COMPANY) operates a jetty at Matak Island in the South China Sea, which
are used by general cargo vessels berthing at the Natuna Logistics Base. The Main Jetty
was constructed in 1993 and consists of a tied back sheet pile wall with a steel plate coping,
also a piled fender system connected to and braced back to the face of sheet pile wall. The
jetty loads behind the coping are carried by a concrete deck supported on bored concrete
piles, the deck and piles are independent from the sheet pile jetty wall.

Currently, the dock is still operating and Medco energy (COMPANY) is planning to add dock
capacity that can accommodate 3,500 DWT vessel (max). Therefore Medco energy
(COMPANY) asked Zekon Indonesia (SUBCONTRACTOR) for review whether the element
elements can endure of design load or not.

The soil investigation is carried out to determine soil strength parameter for design review.
Two (2) boreholes have been successfully completed and a borehole was terminated due to
a operational reason for approval from COMPANY. Each completed borehole is located as
follow:

1.8 Units
All units are in SI (Système international d'unités), unless noted otherwise.

2 Investigation Methodology
2.1 Geotechnical Drilling
The drilling is performed with Modified TOHO-1 rotary drilling machine with tag equipment
SDK-03. Deep boring was done according to American Standard Testing Method (ASTM)
D1452, ASTM D 420, ASTM 2488. Full coring method was conducted.

2.2 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)

The standard penetration tests (SPT) were performed to determine the relative density or
consistency of subsoil and to obtain soil samples for a visual description. SPT were carried
out using automatic drop system hammers. The sampler tube used for SPT test is a Split
Spoon Sampler with an external diameter of 2” (5.08 cm), the internal diameter of 1 3/8” (3.49
cm), and length of 24” (60.96 cm). This sampler is driven by a hammer weighing 140 lbs.
(63.5 kg). To pull the hammer, a manila rope or equivalent is used to raise the hammer before
it falls freely onto the anvil and drive the sampler. The sampler is driven 18” (45.72 cm) and
the number of blows (to drive the last 12” (30.48 cm)) is called N-SPT value with a unit of
blow/feet. The SPT tube is then lifted, the split spoon is opened and the sample is put into a
plastic bag and labelled.
SPT is usually performed following the collection of the undisturbed sample. The procedure
for SPT was in general conformance with standard test method ASTM D1586 Penetration
Test and Split-Barrel Sampling of Soils. SPT samples were also collected and secured with a
plastic bag and placed in the wooden boxes together with the core samples.

2.3 Laboratory Testing

Laboratory tests were performed using standard equipment and methods to determine the
index properties, engineering properties, and chemical properties. The following are soil tests
are expected to be performed in Soil Mechanics Laboratory :
1. Natural Water (Natural Water Content); this test was intended to determine the water
content of soil samples. Implementation of this test was based on to the standard
procedure ASTM D 2216
2. Specific Gravity; this test aimed to determine the soil density. The standard procedure
used was ASTM D 854
3. Density Test; the purpose of this test was to determine the density of soil samples in
the original condition (bulk) and dry conditions (dry). This test was done based on the
standard procedure ASTM D 4254
4. Grain Size Analysis; this test was conducted to determine the gradation/particle size
distribution. The standard procedure used was ASTM D 421 & 422
5. Atterberg Limits; this test was intended to study the response of soil to water content.
Atterberg Limits covers the liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index of soil. This test
based on the standard procedure ASTM D 4318
6. Direct Shear Test; this test is performed to determine the soil strength parameter
especially for granular material. This test standard procedure used was ASTM D3080.

4 DESIGN SOIL PARAMETER

4.1 Soil Parameter
This chapter presents values of engineering properties for types of soil encountered in field.
The scope of this chapter is limited to correlations with soil classification tests, index
properties, and Standard Penetration N-values. Interested readers are encouraged to refer to
works by Kulhawy and Mayne (1990), Carter and Bentley (1991) which present a a
comprehensive compilation of correlations. Other references of comprehensive compilation of
correlations could be seen in FHWA-HI-97-021 (Training Course in Geotechnical and
Foundation Engineering Subsurface Investigations - Participants Manual).

It must be emphasized that calculations based on correlation can never be substituted for
proper testing. In general, all correlations must be considered approximate since various
factors such as sensitivity, stress history, and ageing can significantly influence soil
properties. Soil parameters will consist of total stress parameters, effective stress
parameters, modulus of elasticity and unit weight.

The summary of correlated soil parameters with field exploration data will be presented in
tables and charts. The table shows the typical value of soil parameter whilst charts present
the soil parameter value distribution according to soil type and depth of exploration.
Tables and charts of soil parameters from each point of field exploration are viewed as follow.

5 PILE CAPACITY OF BORED PILE

In general, the ultimate axial capacity of deep foundation(e.g. bored pile or driven pile) can be
obtained as the summation of tip resistance plus skin friction resistance. In practice, the
calculation of deep foundation capacity will be referring to Meyerhof (1976) when dealing with
the driven pile and O’Neill & Reese (1999) while dealing with the bored pile. The load-transfer
mechanisms depend on the type of load being imposed, so it is convenient to divide
structural loads into 2 (two) categories:
1. Axial loads
Applied tensile or compressive loads that act parallel to the axis of the foundation. These
loads induce either tension or compression in the foundation, but no flexure. If the foundation
is vertical, then the axial load is equal to the vertically applied load.’

2. Lateral loads
Those that act perpendicular to the axis of the foundation. This category includes shear and
moment loads.

Figure 10 Load-Transfer Mechanism: a) Axial Compressive Loads; b) Axial Tension Loads;

c) Lateral Loads
Allowable axial capacity has been calculated referring to Engineering Manual (EM 1110-1-
1904) with a minimum factor of safety of about 3.0 while the allowable pullout capacity has
been calculated with a minimum factor of safety of about 3.0.
Existing bored pile has Diameter 1.0 m and 30 m. The capacities of existing bored pile have
been calculated with the current soil investigation.

5.1 Axial Capacity

In general, the ultimate axial capacity of pile foundation can be obtained by a simple equation
as the sum of the end bearing capacity plus the skin friction resistance, or:
Qu = Qb + Qf = qb Ab + fs As
where,
Qu = Ultimate axial capacity /ultimate load applied on the top of pile
qb = Ultimate bearing capacity of the pile at the base
Ab = Bearing area of the base of the pile
As = Total surface area of pile embedded below ground surface
fs = Unit skin friction (ultimate)

In this analysis, 1000 mm of diameter is used for calculating bored pile bearing capacity. The
allowable bearing capacities of the bored pile for each borehole references are given in the
following table, and also presented graphically in Figure 11.

5.2 Lateral Capacity

The lateral capacity analyses are performed using the p-y method and the computer program
LPILE 5.0 with employs a finite difference formulation to solve the differential equations with
non-linear p-y curves to model the soil. LPILE 5.0 allows computation of the pile response
with user-specified non-linear pile flexural stiffness, EpIp.

The program contains default p-y curves that can be used for different types of soils. As an
alternative, the program also allows the user to input p-y curves developed using other
formulations. In the analyses, the piles were discretized into 100 elements.

Limitation of lateral deflection of a deep foundation shall be divided into two (2) categories in
order to determine its lateral capacity. We suggest limiting the deflection of 0.25 in for static
condition and 0.5 in for seismic condition.

Pile properties used in the analysis are presented below:

A series of p-y analyses were carried out using the default p-y curves embedded in the
LPILE program for different types of soils. The default p-y curves recommended by Reese
and Matlock were selected the model of these soils.

The lateral capacities of the concrete bored pile on the free head and fixed are given in the
following table and also presented graphically in the next Figure 12 and Figure 13.

6 CLOSURE AND LIMITATION

The recommendations presented in this report are based on our current understanding of the
site conditions. The nature of subsurface conditions may vary between tested locations and
from the assumptions discussed. Variations between the tested locations may not become
evident until construction. The owner’s geotechnical engineer on site should observe the
exposed subsurface during construction. If the subsurface conditions encountered during
construction differ from those encountered by the site investigation, Zekon Indonesia should
be notified so that we might review our recommendations in light of such changes and
provide a written modification or verification of changes.

Unanticipated soil conditions are commonly encountered that cannot fully be determined by a
limited number of explorations or soil samples. Such unexpected conditions frequently result
in additional project cost in order to build the project as designed. Therefore, a contingency
for unanticipated conditions should be included in the construction budget and schedule.
Our professional services have been performed, our findings derived, and our
recommendations prepared in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering
principles and standards. Zekon Indonesia is not responsible for the conclusions, opinions,
or recommendations of others based on this data.
Our investigation did not include any assessment or evaluation of environmental conditions or
contamination in the soil.
