1) What is your BHAG?

To be the leader of a company that makes substantial change in the way the world views
our environment, and how big business operate. I want to make an impact on the
environment in a big positive way.
2) Why is this your BHAG?

I have had passion for our earth since I became friends with a professor at my community
college who taught environmental studies. She opened my eyes to the things we as
humans do that impact our earth in such a negative way. The Earth is about to pass the
point of no return. If we, collectively as a human population, do not take action now, our
world WILL completely crumble before our eyes. I wish that my children, and
grandchildren can experience the amazing natural wonders that I was lucky to
experience. But these natural wonders are already beginning to deteriorate due to the
human population.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

“My vision for my future is to make a positive impact on the way our society views
natural resources, and to create a booming change in the way we address the issues we
have caused the earth.” – Selena Peterson

My vision statement is perfectly in line with my BHAG. They are both related to helping
solve the environmental crisis we are currently in. I made this my vision statement
because this is an issue that HAS to be fixed within MY lifetime. No excuses.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

“My mission is to spread love and compassion wherever I go, and encourage others to be
the best they can be.” – Selena Peterson

My mission statement is my personal mission to spread love and compassion to those I

interact with in life. BUT love and compassion to the earth is important too! I think we all
need to realize that the earth is a living breathing thing, and needs love and compassion
and help at this pivotal point in our history.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

1. Changing laws and legislature.

Creating change at the level that it needs to be changed at requires creating and/or
changing laws that relate to things like carbon emissions, dumping of toxic wastes,
etc. To do this I would need to be able to impact laws that could make these changes.
2. Creating a name for myself.
In order to impact companies, organizations, law, and individuals, I need to make a
name for myself. I have to be seen as credible and believable in order to be heard by
anyone.
3. Getting into the ENV scope of things.
I have a passion for environmental studies, and have taken several classes on it and
have done my own external research, but I do not have an environmental studies
degree, or a degree in any kind of environmental sciences. It is harder to get into a
position that could influence this spectrum without this degree.
4. Learning more and staying on top of environmental problems.
The problems our Earth is struggling with are always changing, and getting worse. To
accomplish my BHAG I would need to always stay up to date on changes in
environmental issues and their severities.
5. Not getting discouraged.
With an issue as large, grueling, and underappreciated as environmental issues it is
easy to become discouraged. Even sometimes now, I feel as though our world will
never truly understand how badly we are impacting the Earth until it is too late. But,
as my professor told me “You can either be part of the problem, or part of the
solution.” And from that moment I vowed that no matter how bleak the situation, I
always wanted to be part of the solution.
1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?

There are two types of careers that I could take to achieve my BHAG. First would be a
protean career where I create a company, with my own values and environmental ethics,
that’s purpose is to influence other companies to become more green, and drive my
mission and vision statement to create change.
Second is a more organizational career in law making. Working for the government to
help influence the laws made or changed to help be more environmentally conscious.
These paths are very different, but I believe that both could lead to the outcome I want.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

Creating my own company or building my own organization is definitely an alternative

career path. But I think it would be most effective because I could make sure that my
ethics, my vision, and my mission are at the forefront of the company. Whereas, if I were
to work for another company my vision may not be their number one priority.

If I take the government route, I would be moving up the government organization to a

place that gives me enough power to make the changes that I envision. This route would
be very difficult. It would most likely involve me going back to school, getting my foot in
the door with an entry level position, and having to fight very hard to make it to an
impactful position.
3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

I believe that to achieve this type of goal my work schedule will be very intense. If I am
building my own company I will basically be on call even when I am not “at work.” And
I will be responsible for everything at all times. I imagine the schedule being quite
extensive and demanding.
4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the
country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your
BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports
your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,
or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as
SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the
following time periods:

i. Recycling Coordinator
For Republic Services. The Recycling Coordinator develops and
implements recycling and diversion programs and assists in the promotion
of the Company’s recycling efforts. Recycling is key to helping solve one
of the big issues our planet is facing and that is over production of non-
renewable resources.

ii. Program Coordinator

For the Global Sustainability Resource Center (GSRC) This center focuses
on bringing youth together to make impacts in our natural world. I think
bringing youth together would create a fire in their bellies. That is what
happened to me, and if I can spread that same fire on to others it would
only create a group that much bigger and stronger to make my BHAG
come to life.

i. Assistant Project Manager

For First Carbon Solutions. This company works on improving the

sustainability of the world we live in by advancing sustainable practices
globally. This would really get me working with a company who’s ethics
and ideals match mine. This company also attempts to influence others
which matches my BHAG too.

ii. Education Business Development Manager

For Specialty Coffee Association. Their goal is to address sustainability
issues in the coffee industry and spread their learnings worldwide. Though
this seems like it is a smaller spectrum, the coffee industry is HUGE, and I
respect that this company is trying to change an entire industry to be more
environmentally responsible. This is something I could get behind.

i. Environmental Air Quality Project Manager

For Ambient Air Services. Help the environment by regulating big
business air emissions. A huge part of the reason why our earth is in
trouble is BIG BUSINESSES. Factories for these businesses create so
much waste, and emit huge amounts of toxins in the air. Cracking down
on big businesses is the only way to truly see my BHAG come true.

ii. Sustainability Services and Solutions Leader

For First Carbon Solutions. Directly in charge of sustainability practices.
Leading the way in sustainability with different companies is half of the
dream. Teaching others how they can still work and achieve their goals
without destroying the planet while doing it is majorly important.

d. BHAG Achievement Year

i. President/CEO/Leader of MY own Environmental Organization

No URL.

ii. President of the Environmental Defense Fund

Being top dog for an organization like this would mean I could impact it,
and the earth, in the biggest way.

1) Critically think about and then list the interim steps or milestones you have laid out
for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG (you should have at least 10 to
earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

a. May 2019 - Graduate college

b. Year 1: Enter a field or work with a company whose goals and visions align with
mine.

c. Year 1-4: Gain experience, understanding, and good rapport with people in that
industry.

d. Year 5: Take that experience and begin to build my own blueprints for my own
company.

e. Year 5-6: Build a small team of likeminded people to help build the company.

f. Year 5-6: Crowd fund or find funding resources to get the company off the
ground.

g. Year 6-8: Create a name for our company in the online space, and in the public
eye.

h. Year 10: Use our influence to make changes to industry standards.

i. Year 10-12: Begin to reach out globally.

j. Year 12-15: Create global changes by aiding other countries in sustainable

resources and sustainable energy.

k. Year 15-20: Lead nations in understanding environmental issues and our place in
a sustainable future.

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

a. The first thing that I am willing to sacrifice is having children. I love children, and
have definitely thought about having a family. But I hold the idea of saving the
earth so much higher than me having children. If I were to get to a place in my
career path where I was making progress and doing the things that I set out to do
and making changes to better the Earth and having children would hinder that
progress, I would opt to not have children. I know this sounds extreme, and
obviously life happens and things change, but I am prepared to sacrifice having a
family for achieving these goals.

b. The second thing I would be willing to sacrifice besides time would be most other
hobbies. I currently enjoy tap dancing, running, and hiking. But I know that
running a company, or having a job in government is very demanding. I would be
willing to sacrifice most of my extra time that I currently use for hobbies, to give
to achieving my goals.

c. Lastly, I would be willing to sacrifice other career goals. While I have this passion
for the environment, I also really like helping people. Another goal of mine is to
do something that impacts people in a positive and direct way. But if I had to
choose, and sacrifice one, I would sacrifice my drive to help people to help the
environment. After all, what are we without an Earth to live on?
1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

(Insert your #1 Goal above and provide short answers below describing your goal in
terms of the SMART model. Finally, provide a Gantt chart using the tools provided).

a. Specific: To begin working for, and gain experience with, and environmental
science based company.

b. Measurable: I want to work with the company for 2 years. The company must be
environmentally focused, with goals to better our earth through their practices.

c. Attainable: A lot of companies are now realizing that environmental ethics are
important. I think that now there are more options to be able to find a job like this
than there were in the past.

d. Relevant: This is important to me and my mission to gain experience in the field

of environmental studies and sustainable practices, and learning from companies
with like goals will help me to mold my own ideas for a company.

e. Time-Based: I would like to be in this position within a year of my graduation

date, and stay with the company for approximately 1 to 4 years, or until I have
gained a substantial amount of knowledge and experience.

2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

(Insert your #2 Goal above and provide short answers below describing your goal in
terms of the SMART model. Finally, provide a Gantt chart using the tools provided).
a. S: Document my experience working for an environmental company. Via journals
and vlogs.

b. M: I will have weekly vlog documents and weekly journal posts about my
experience, things I have learned, take-away moments, and things I do not like.

c. A: Vlogs are very informal and not particularly difficult. Making it so the
documentation is once a week is very attainable.

d. R: This will help me to remember all of the things I am learning through the
company and document things that are do’s and don’ts of leading that type of
organization. This will all help me when I decide to branch out on my own.

e. T: I will do this for the duration of my time with the company, so 1-4 years.
