Abstract

The researchers/proponents of this study tends to explain how social media affects our life as

Filipinos and also how are we able to let ourselves be involved with our social issues and to our

society. Existing studies also shows that social media “when used correctly” would be able to

help ourselves to be connected with other people and be involved in our society, also Facebook

is also a great platform in advertisements, news, announcements, school related files (ppts, word)

and will be able to help a person be involved even without the need of going out of their homes.

Technology already plays a big role in this generation, even on a school setting, the focus of the

researchers are the idea and the life of students regarding their self-involvement, or on how they

tend to follow the flow of this fast-paced technology era. Researchers focused on students along

Mendiola, because among the growing population here in the Philippines, the most common who

use and take advantage of technology are students who are more on the modern side of life.

Keywords: Technology, Social Media, Facebook, Social Involvement

Introduction

In this generation people depend their life on Social Media, Gadgets, Internet, and many

more tech stuffs, many would say that “the generation now is definitely different from previous

generations”, a good statement with also a very good explanation, some people also objects on

the fact that social media or gadgets is ruining the child’s way of socializing and communicating

in the outside world, in the past children usually go outside and play with their playmates, also

they tend to communicate better and be able to be active and be healthier, some of the problems

concerning our generations today are social involvement, people would question the youth how

they will be able to be involved with the society and the environment through social media, of

gadgets?

In the past we have lots of games that children plays outside their home, but nowadays,

children tends to stay inside their houses and just scroll their phones, or tablets, the real question

in this is “does this affect the child’s social involvement?”, “will this affect the child’s attitude as

for them growing up?”.

People usually tends to make Social Media as a platform for them to be connected,

according to a article regarding Social media and its effects, it is said that social media was

mainly made for the convenience of a human being, and humans or people no matter what race

or where you are likes convenience in any way. People also tend to use social media in many

aspects, in a school setting for example, Facebook Messenger is one way for the students to

communicate even when they are not in school, they become connected and updated to everyday

happenings. However according to a journal article regarding technology, people tends to misuse

technology nowadays, the sole and main purpose of social media is for the people to be able to
use it for good and convenient way, but some has already discovered the help of social media in

a bad way. For example, robbers tend to use technology to hack credit cards systems and also

other related situations. While being in a technology era we are currently living in a fast-paced

lifestyle, because of this people are using social media and other tech to follow to the flow of the

said technological era, because nowadays without technology everything will shut down, and the

progressiveness of a specific place or country would slow down dramatically. So what are the

said effects of social media to our everyday life? According to a journal article from American

authors, technology plays a big role in our day to day life basis, one way to show how important

technology nowadays is when in your everyday life you never forget your phone when leaving

your house, you use your car with a GPS system , and also while using the computer to send

emails, business proposal, etc. when used correctly technology would be a useful thing and a

great help for the upcoming future, but when people are using it and taking advantage of it,

people will not benefit from the said invention, and probably could also cause chaos if not

handled well, nowadays technology is just around the corner, it is readily available to the users

and also the consumers but will it be a benefit to the future generations? Will it provide proper

self-involvement for the future kids and future population? It is hard to tell, but one thing is for

sure, Technology will play a big role into helping an individual live a fast paced lifestyle and will

also be able to adapt easily because of the help of technology and will also be able to be

connected with the help of social media, no matter where the location or what race it could be, it

will not be a factor, because technology is for everyone to use, it is just up to the people or the

growing population on how they will fully utilize the growth of the technological era.

Students also depends on technology in this era, because even educators prefer the use of

technology because of its convenience, fro example, they can have a quiz even without going to
the school or attending class, technology makes our life easier, but it can also destroy lives, one

article written in the U.S. states that students tend to be involved in the technological world

brought by social medias, online phishing and other online scams are also on the loose, the only

possible cure or solution the majority of the online users see, is that proper education regarding

online use, and social media use, and also proper guidance from the elders to educate and guide

the young generations for them to be able to be productive and fully utilize the use of technology

and the good use of social media.

News nowadays reach its viewers like a snap, one post and after a minute thousand have

already seen your post, this is one way the researchers foresee the use of technology specially

social media for the involvement of the youth, the main purpose of this research is to see,

whether students from Mendiola Consortium Schools are well aware of the proper use of

technology specifically social media, and if they are considered socially involved despite having

all the means and resources. Majority of the youth are now technology literate as many calls

them,, because the younger generations are the generation where technology has started and they

are the one who sees the importance of it. Many are worried of what the technology will cause

the youth, that is what this research is focused it is based on the youth being able to show their

contributions and being knowledgable of what is happening in the society by using this

platforms. This research also aims to provide answers regarding technology (social media)

advantages and disadvantages to students along Mendiola.

Conceptual Model / Operational Framework

It can be seen that society today has moved through a faster phase in life, where in

everything can be accessed instantly and with ease. Connecting with others and getting in
touched became so much different compared to the old ways; you can now interact with others

without even being physically present in the situation through the use of social media. The use of

social media platforms to connect and absorb disseminated information has been beneficial to

our society although many people who use social media platforms specifically ‘Facebook’ took

advantage of its accessibility to spread false information, this may result in confusion which will

deceive students that are exposed to these fallacies.

The influence of Facebook on students has been very apparent, a study made by Sulaiman, Ainin

in 2018 titled “Influence of personality traits on Facebook engagement and their effects on

socialization behavior and satisfaction with university life” showed the correlation between

Facebook engagement and users personality trait. The study analyzed the impact of Facebook

engagement on a students’ socialization behavior and their satisfaction with their university life.

Even though social media has been a big help in interacting with people around the globe, one

may infer that it has led society to avoid physical social interaction even affecting those people

who are nearby in ways of having to use social media to reach them instead of physically seeing

them personally.

The social media platform ‘Facebook’ has formed communities that offers a wide selection of

interests, people formed this communities on Facebook based on mutual passion on specific

activities or topics. The purpose of these specific groups is to help individuals connect with

others with the same interest as them; this serves as a positive feeling of self-involvement.

The Social Media Engagement theory expands upon Prahalad and Ramaswamy's (2004) model

of co-creation in the administration area and adjusts this model to make a closefisted

hypothetical structure to clarify SME. Initially worked as a model of association between a client
and association, we expand this model to concentrate on the social associations among

participants that are upheld by the online networking stage given by an association. We expand

upon Prahalad and Ramaswamy's (2004) work by applying a socio-specialized frameworks point

of view to initially address why the participants experience impacts social involvement and in

this manner use.

The whole research will be guided by the operational framework presented below:

Methodology

In this research the proponents will be applying the Interpretative phenomenological analysis

approach, in which we can correlate and offer insights on how a specific person, makes sense on

the given phenomenon which is social media, on how it will affect a person with its day to day

basis, and on how the person will be able to involve themselves to the society and the nature. In

securing the data of the said research the proponents/researchers will be using the survey forms,

interviews, and also observation from the said participants. Researchers propose that students

from San Beda University (Survey Forms/interviews), and Individual students along the

Mendiola Consortium Schools (Observation) of their social involvement. The intended size of our

participants if not more than 30 participants in which each will be given a survey form for them
to answer truthfully, and honestly. The intended participants should be a student and also ages

ranging from 20 – 25. While for the observation, we would like to observe the following in

regards to how social media affects their social involvement.

1. Bystanders (students who just loiter around Mendiola)

2. Students who commutes and uses public utility vehicles.

For the individual survey form, the students would be given a survey questionnaire for them to

answer, it is in a “likert scale” type of questionnaire, in this we will be able to use this survey

form in concluding how much social involvement the students has and how social media affects

this situation. For the individual interview, students would be asked these 2 basic questions.

1. How often do you check your social media?

2. What are the reasons of you checking your social media?

In here, some of the follow up question will also be given depending on how the students

answers the proposed initial questions.

While in observation, we aim to know how the regular day of a student in Mendiola express their

social involvement and if they and/or are they socially involved and if social media has

something to do with this. The researchers will administer the survey by looking for participants

around the university belt area. Our preferred participants are college students with the ages

ranging from 19-21 years of age. The participants will be given 3 - 5 minutes to complete the

survey. The participants will be asked of their contact information in case of clarifications with

participants answers in the survey. The participants will be informed about the nature of the

study and will be given consent forms that will provide the participants about the confidentiality

of this research. The participants will be given the chance to withdraw in this research at any

time they don’t feel comfortable. The researchers will fully allow the right of the participants to
be anonymous as a protection for their identity. The qualitative research design that will be used

in this research is the Case study research design. For the analysis, it will use the Interpretative

phenomenological analysis. The shared life experiences of Facebook users in San Beda

University Manila. How will they involve themselves in the society of Social Media site

“Facebook”. All phenomenon approached will be considered as signs that will be analyzed

critically and semiotically to ensure the best possible results.
