The unit hydrograph is the direct
runoff hydrograph produced by a
storm of given duration such that the
total volume of excess rainfall is 1
mm. The total volume of direct runoff
is also 1 mm.
A volume of 1 mm is the amount of water in a 1-
mm layer uniformly distributed over the entire
watershed area. This volume is equal to the area
under the UH.
Assumptions:
1. The upper limit for use of the unit hydrograph method is 5000 km2
2. Unit hydrographs assume uniform distribution of rainfall over the
catchment and uniform intensity during the duration of rainfall
excess. In practice, these two conditions are never satisfied
