5E Lesson Plan

Teacher(s): Taycia Grasmick, Lisa Iverness

Date: February 4th, 2019

Subject / grade level: Kindergarten
Materials: Images of shapes with names, objects of various shapes

State Standards: K.G: Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles,
hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres). 3. Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, “flat”) or
threedimensional (“solid”).
Lesson objective(s):
 Students will be able to match name of shape to figure of shape.
 By the end of the lesson, students will be able to connect names of shapes to various objects that represent shapes.
Using visual representations helps the child connect new terms with known shapes.

Differentiation/Accommodation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

 Identify a learner with an exceptionality within your classroom is a young boy with autism that struggles with word association.
 Adaptations to students with special needs include:
o Place shape cards next to objects that represent shapes while student is learning to identify names of shapes.
o Label objects with names of shapes.
o Label shapes around the room to support synthesis of new terms.
This is an adaptation for a student with special needs that supports the objective for the lesson and the text on page 155, prompting and visual supports.
 Word association with images helps reinforce learning in the student.
 Word association on objects helps to increase exposure to new vocabulary and concepts.

ENGAGEMENT
 Treat the lesson like a game with a rewarding activity for the learner with special needs.
This supports learning strategies used for Tier I students in offering a reward for proper response, (text p. 152)
 Ask student to connect shape names with unlabeled objects to check for understanding.

EXPLORATION
 Manipulating 3D objects to practice word association.
 Ask student to show various shapes by using shape names, shape descriptions, and connecting shape names to known objects.
Labeling items and representing the shapes with multiple media helps scaffold the lesson and evaluate student progress.

EXPLANATION
 Describe to student properties of the shape.
 Identify properties of certain known objects and explain how they relate to the properties of the shapes through use of visual aids.
This is supportive of the student with special needs by using visuals to explain more complex concepts, found on text p. 155.

ELABORATION
 Practice naming the shape of common objects, such as a ball, or a box.
 Vocabulary will focus on names of shapes and learning what makes those shapes different.
 Connecting shapes to known objects helps solidify understanding of shapes and identifying differences of shapes.
This supports student learning through repetition and provides ample ways to assess concept mastery or improvement.
