Campaign Proposal
“got milk?” “Milk Life.” “Them bones, them bones need, calcium.” These are just a few
campaigns that have come and gone throughout the ages to get kids to drink more milk but have
any of them actually worked? And why has it been pushed throughout the years for kids to drink
more milk? Some may say that it is for calcium to get your bones stronger. While this is true,
there is another reason. Milk helps children’s brains develop and grow faster and better. 2% and
whole milk is recommended for children to drink, but at school we only have 1% or fat free.
We have all heard that fat is bad and we should be eating low fat and fat free foods. This
theory may not be true. With the fats gone, the flavor is gone. Food manufacturers saw this and
added more sugar to things, like milk, to make foods taste better. This added sugar has made
more problems because now, 30 years after these fat free laws were passed, America’s obesity
rates have tripled. We as a country tried to fix what we thought was a problem but we made a
bigger problem as a result. Npr.org states, “In a 2005 study, researchers at Brigham and
Women's Hospital reported that skim and 1 percent milk were associated with weight gain
among 9-to-14-year-olds.” This article has many more studies shown that support the idea that
With this new knowledge, my partner in this project, Nick Bodily, and I, had an idea.
What if we changed the milk at schools to two percent and whole? We found and talked to the
director of nutrition services, Jana Cruz, and she said that she agrees and supports us in trying to
get the word out and to make people more aware of this issue. She told us that the school and the
district does not regulate these things but the government does. Our goal for this issue is to get
people more knowledgeable so that we can maybe change this law in the future.
To get the word out, we are going to go to a city council meeting to get politicians involved and
to see that there is an issue that needs to be resolved. We are also going to make an e-poster to
send out on facebook or other social media. Since we have support from the district we are going
to try to put this on schools social media or schools websites to let people know about this issue.
One other thing is that we may try to get space in the school newspaper. One last thing that we
will do is make and pass out flyers. We will spend about three hours getting ready and going to a
council meeting. Two hours for buying materials and making flyers. Then the last hour will be
handing out flyers and putting them up around places like the school. The only material cost that
we will have is just buying supplies for the posters and flyers. This will be no more than $10-15.
Health and nutrition have always been a focus in everyone's life, especially schools. Past
thoughts had said that higher fat was making the obesity levels higher, but while changing to low
fat, our obesity rates have tripled. Help us make our health better and help us get two percent
