More Than a Feeling

Chaucer believed in the strength of people no matter their background? Chaucer is the

father of English literature and the voice of the people. The story “The Unknown Bride” is a tale

of love honor and equality. This story follows the journey of a knight accused of disrespecting

women so he is put to death, he is then sent off to save his neck by finding the answer to the

question “what do women desire most”. Love plays a huge part as the underlying message the

story as a whole is based on.

Love is the glue that holds this story together, as the knight in the story finds love in its

truest form. In the beginning the knight was skeptical and unwilling to look passed appearance to

find love. “My love? Rather, my ruin,” said the knight.” Alas, that such a thing should be, that

such a shame should befall my house!” (Chaucer 3). The way Chaucer defines love is shown by

how the knight doesn’t see passed appearances until later. Later in the story, the knight has come

to accept his fate and start to find love the way Chaucer defines it. “I believe that you are wise

and good, and I take you for my true and faithful wife.”(Chaucer 4). Love is more than

appearance it is also what you define yourself with and our bonds with others. For the most part

love is just an emotion but the way it is made and maintained is more than that.

The story of “the unknown bride” is based on Chaucer’s ideas of love and its

implications. The underlying message of the tale is that love is more than a visual response, love

is the how and why we feel passed just appearance. Love by the definition of Chaucer is the

connection to people beyond their physical appearance.
