Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The students become engaged in this lesson with this interactive video. Starting the lesson off
with a video goes way beyond the standard teacher reading out of the text book at the front of the class. The
students wonder what will come next after this video is shown.
Representation: The video that will be shown to the class was made using iMovie, representing information
addressed in this first grade science standard. The students’’ knowledge will be expressed after they watch
this video and are able to create a Bubbl.US as a class on key facts learned from this short film. They will also
make their own plant using sensory devices, then to further extend their knowledge, they will make an iMovie
as a group of four or five students.
Action and Expression: The students will be creating a Bubbl.US to express knowledge retrieved from this
video. They will build upon others’ thoughts and ideas and create a chart to express their knowledge on this
standard. Their knowledge is also expressed as they build their own plant with playdough, then make their
own iMovie. This also addresses the technology standard introduced with this lesson.
Lesson idea implementation: The teacher begins by introducing a lesson on the parts on a plant on Friday. He
or she begins by showing the video on the parts of a plant made using iMovie. The teacher uses the IWB to
show this film and reach the students’ attention. The video engages the students by not being too long or too
in-depth, but still reaching their content knowledge. This video will also be uploaded to the class blog page for
students and parents to watch at any time.

Moreover, once the video has finished playing, the teacher pulls up the Bubbl.US page to create a diagram of
the key fats students took heed to from the film that was just shown to the whole class. The student’ build on
each other’s knowledge, which promotes teamwork and an engaging class discussion. After the students’
discussion on this standard addressed, they will be split into groups of four or five students and given bins of
play dough and tools to use with play dough. Together as a group, they will create their own plant as a group
using the play dough, and then they will label the parts of the plant represented in the video. They will label

the parts of the plant using a marker to label and draw an arrow pointing to which part. They will so this on
blue sheets of construction paper. Additionally, this exercise not only allows students to exemplify their
knowledge of this topic, but also promotes the students’ hand-eye coordination using play dough as a sensory
device for representing the parts of the plant.

Importance of technology: Using iMovie increases the level of Bloom’s taxonomy to new extents, while
promoting a sense of creativity for not only students, but for teachers as well. There are now so many easily
available apps that can be downloaded to devices for students to use, even the young Kindergarten and first
graders can easily work through these apps and software programs.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: The students will refer to the images that they took themselves for the
iMovie they will be creating as group. The teacher will also ensure internet safety by already having audio files
uploaded to the iPads so that the kids are not having to search at all. Likewise, even if they were to be
searching the internet, the school board is constantly monitoring sites searched by students and teachers,
and there are locks put on any inappropriate site. Furthermore, the best tool for internet safety is for
teachers and parents to educate students on how important it is to only use sites and images approved by the
teacher or guardian.
Reflective Practice: To further extend this lesson, the students could take pictures of plants over the weekend
and bring these pictures back into class on Monday. Then, the children could be divided into groups of four or
five students to scan in the pictures they brought using the class iPads and create their own iMovie of plants
found around their home. Using the pictures they take themselves promotes internet safety, for they are not
using safari for any type of browsing, and these images are approved by the teacher. Furthermore, this
activity also promotes a sense of parent involvement and also encourages children to go outside and spend
time outdoors over the weekend. Additionally, they will import their own audio from selecting from the
already uploaded files to the iPad. This also ensures that the teacher knows what is being uploaded and used
for their films. Also, these films will be uploaded to the class blog for parents and coordinating teachers to
view.
