Reflection Paper Assignment

Coming into this class I did not expect to learn much because I have been using a laptop

and computer for most of my life. Since I was young and until today, my face has been glued to

the laptop screen for at least 5 hours a day which would be a higher number if I didn’t have to go

to school. In my elementary school computer classes I prided myself on my 75-wpm typing

speed despite being in the 4th grade, so I was surprised to find that there were still things I could

learn about the computer.

I was able to learn new things about the Microsoft Office Programs as well as Photoshop.

It was my first time using Adobe Photoshop in this class because I am neither one to take

pictures nor edit them, however despite my negative perspective on photoshop it was

surprisingly fun to use. I do not think I will ever use it again however considering I need to pay

for the program and I have no use for editing my photos. The unit I considered to be the most

useful was the Excel unit. Although I have used Excel before I am not as well-versed in it as I

am PowerPoint or Word. Before this class I used Excel by inputting numbers into the tables

manually which as you have mentioned in class once before, is something that could have been

done in Word. Now I can create named ranges as well as let the program input the data for me.

Learning how to correctly use Excel will help me in the future whether it’s for completing my

assignments efficiently or improving my resume.

Although I am grateful to have learned Photoshop and Excel skills, there were other units

in this class which were not very useful in comparison. PowerPoint and Word are programs that I

am used to using since I have used them several times for my high school and college

assignments. Even the shortcuts that were taught to us during class were things that I already

knew. I learned how to use these shortcuts by myself and through google searching whenever I

needed help, such as the word count function and even how to hyper indent.

Other than learning about these programs to a bigger extent, I also learned information

about Hardware, Software, Viruses, Spyware, and the history of computers. The most interesting

fact that I remember is that it was a group of women who created the first computer, and that it

was obscured from public view in favor of giving white men the accomplishment. This also

made me interested in the movie which is based on this real life event, Hidden Figures. When I

find the time to, I will surely watch the movie.

This class has taught me many things about programs such as Publisher, Photoshop, and

Excel, but I believe there is much more for me to learn. Even after this class ends I will aim to

improve my technology skills further because I believe these skills are highly needed in college

and any workplace.
