HTSB Standard #2: Learner Differences - The teacher uses understanding of individual
differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments
that enable each learner to meet high standards.
Unit 4- Intro to Animation - part of Digital Media 1/1st year Arts & Communication - The unit
introduces the student to the animation industry, and the techniques and equipment used to
produce animations.
I have been teaching animation for several years and it is one of the most well recieved
lessons by students. The animation unit is important to gain student engagement and it also
gives studetns skillsets that they will use throughout the course. Animation is used frequently
in video production and special effects, and in several media forms like gaming and
advertising. It is important that all students grasp the concepts of animation to be successful
later in the course.
2.2: Candidate Incorporates Multiple Intelligence/Learning Styles - Does Candidate incorporate
multiple approaches to learning that engage a range of learner preferences?
The lessons in the unit are desigend to accomodate all lerning styles. For instance, students
have the opportunity to learn a new concept by listening to instructor lectures, participating in
class discussions, reading handouts, watching videos, or learning from their classmates in
small group discussions. Each lesson provides students with a variety of digital resources
delivered through their Google classroom. Students not only get to choose what type of
resources they can use to learn but since the resources are online they are available to the
student when they are ready to learn.

The curriculum allows the student to learn in their own way and at their own pace while
keeping the student accountable for their work. The unit and the work and expectations are
transparent to the student. Students that want to excel through the project know how to get
through the worksheets and requirements quickly to be able to start the project sooner.
Students that want to learn but are struggling are given the time and support they need to
gain understanding. And students that are more focused on other work and projects can get
the required work done and spend their time on work of their choice.
2.4: Candidate Incorporates Learners' Culture - Does Candidate include multiple perspectives
in the presentation and discussion of content that include each learner’s personal, family,
community, and cultural experiences and norms?
I am new to the island (3 years) and my understanding of the Hawaiian culture is just starting.
I plan to increase my knowledge of the Hawaiian culture in hopes to better connect with my
students. Fortuneately I hve a lot of resources here at the school, we have a relitively high
population of native Hawaiian students and several teachers and staff that are very
knowedgeable of the Hawaiian culture and language.

With more background and resources I plan to create more lessons that are tied to Hawaiian
culture. The animation lesson can be modified so that the project the students are creating has
a Hawaiian focus. For example, the animation has to tell an acient Hawaiian sotry from the
region.
