Feasibility Study of Check Dam Construction for the Ground Water

Development of Mangapalle Village of Sanjamala Mandal of Kurnool
District

Objective of Project:

Check dams are constructed for raising ground water levels and to stop
flood water .The feasibility study of check dam is the process of finding the role of check
dam in ground water development. The major uses of check dams are to reduce the flow
velocity in channels, water ways, and erosion control and ground water improvement etc.
It is very important to improve the ground water levels because it serves as the major
source of water for domestic, industrial use. Mostly check dams are constructed in such
places where there is flat slope of ground, adequate rainfall, pervious strata, high runoff
and gravel soil which will be more suitable for the development of ground water.

In this study, initially capacity of check dam is found by doing surveying in Mangapalle
village. Instruments like total station are used for finding the capacity. Survey data
obtained from the total station is given as input in surfer software which is used in finding
capacity contours and capacity of check dam is obtained. Run off analysis is calculated
for the catchment area around the check dam. Runoff analysis and obtained results are
used to conclude effect of check dam for the ground water development.From the above
analysis it is assesed that there is no development of ground water level and over flow of
check dam in the current location of check dam in Mangapalle village because of
inadequate rainfall.
