BOOK REVIEW AND SYNOPSIS

EW 102 – A SECOND COURSE IN ELECTRONIC WARFARE

BY DAVID L ADAMY

About the Author

1. David L. Adamy is president of Adamy Engineering and previously worked as
a systems engineer and program manager on EW and reconnaissance programs
delivering systems from "DC to light" on platforms from submarines to space. He has
been involved in electronic warfare and related fields as an engineer and a manager for
more than 40 years. He is also the author of Introduction to Electronic Warfare
Modelling and Simulation, EW 101: A First Course in Electronic Warfare and Preparing
and Delivering Effective Technical Presentations, Second Edition (Artech House 2003,
2001, 2000), as well as several other books. Mr. Adamy received his M.S.EE in
communication theory from the University of Santa Clara, and his B.S.EE from Arizona
State University.
About the Book
2. In general this book is intended for the individuals who are new to the field of
electronic warfare. The book provides general overview, a grasp of fundamentals and
ability to make general level calculations and concepts.
3. This book is in continuance with the best selling title EW 101: A First Course
in Electronic Warfare. The book provides a basic working knowledge of technologies
and techniques in electronic warfare (EW) systems. This book include tutorial on:
a. Radar characteristics
b. Infra red and electro optical systems
c. Signal jamming
d. Spectrum spreading
e. Satellite communications
f. Emitter location system
4. The subjects covered in this book are:
a. Chapter 1 – Introduction. This chapter introduces reader about basic
definitions and knowledge of Electromagnetic counter measures (ECM),
Electromagnetic support measures (ESM) and Electromagnetic counter-
counter measures (ECCM).
b. Chapter 2 – Threats. This chapter provides different types of threats
including their guidance systems and approaches used. This chapter also
concise description of radar and communication threats in addition to
weapon threats.

c. Chapter 3 – Radar Characteristics. This chapter encompasses the
radar technology in detail. The details ranging from operating principle,
radar equation to types of radars and modern radar techniques are
covered.
d. Chapter 4 – Infrared and Electro-Optical Systems Considerations in
Electronic Warfare. This chapter covers infra red (IR) based
electronic equipment used for electronic warfare and counter measures
available in this frequency range. This chapter provides outline of IR
Guided Missiles, IR Scanners Systems, IR Imagery and Laser Target
Designation.
e. Chapter 5 – EW against Communication Signals. This chapter covers
analogue and digital communication systems and the jamming techniques
available for each system.
f. Chapter 6 – Accuracy of Emitter Location Systems. This chapter
describes the techniques for location of EW capable systems. Angle
measurement, distance measurement and accuracy of the techniques are
discussed in detail.
g. Chapter 7 – Communication Satellite Links. This chapter introduces
Communication Satellites to the reader with a focus on satellite technical
parameters, communication link losses and jamming techniques used for
communication links.
Areas Pertinent to Our Syllabi/Courses
5. This books sums up the basic operation and technical knowledge of Radars,
Guided Weapon Systems and Signal Communication. Most of the topics described in
the book are already part of syllabi of AA (Radar and Missile Instrument Technician),
YO(E), MCC (Radar and Guided Weapon System) and specialist course of Radar and
Guided Weapon Systems (Officers and OR).
6. The ECM and ECCM have already been incorporated in the syllabi of courses
mentioned in para 5. Some new techniques are described in EW 102, which can be
used to improve presently taught material. The pertinent areas of the book are flagged.
7. This book can be used as a reference material for ECM and ECCM for
Radars, Guided Weapons and Signal Communication only. For detailed material on
above mentioned topics, following books are already being used as reference material:
a. Radars. Introduction to Radar Technology by Scholnick
b. Guided Weapon Systems. RMCS Precis – Guided Weapons
Systems
c. Signal Communications. Communication Systems by Sklar
