Meriwether. I arrived at 9:30, along with two other interns that I will be working with closely
this semester. The first thing that we did was attend the morning devotion. They have this every
day, led by one of the activities directors. After the devotion, we met with Lauren, our supervisor
and discussed possible tasks we would be performing this semester. She decided that we would
be doing weekly rotations between the front desk, shadowing the LPN, and working with the
activities director. The duties of the front desk include answering phones, dealing with concerns
of the residents and their children, and working with medical and personal files for each resident
to make sure they have all of the required, up to date documents. Shadowing the LPN, which I
have not done yet, is to my understanding, going to be following him as he assesses patients one-
on-one to develop individual care plans for them. Working with the activities director will
include planning and carrying out events for the residents. They have devotion every morning
and they have an exercise class every morning. I think it would be great for me and the other
interns to try to plan some health promotion related events to work in to the calendar, so I look
forward to discussing that with both Lauren and the activity directors.
We had about a 15-minute lunch and then the rest of the day was spent sitting in on a
couple of meetings with Lauren. One meeting was a run-down of patients that were having
health problems and the progress that they were or were not making. The second meeting was
with some of the night staff CNA’s. They discussed a better system for logging clinical notes and
also taking orders for meals. The rest of the day, we worked on a schedule.
Tuesday 11/15/18 8:30-2:30: Today was a little more structured, which I really liked. When I
arrived, I helped the other interns clean up from breakfast. Then, I worked with the front desk
lady, Amber. She showed me how to update files on each resident. There was a sheet of all of the
requirements that they needed, including insurance cards, a will, a DNR form, TB test, and a
number of other things. We organized several folders and made a spreadsheet that listed any
missing documents for the residents. I did this until lunch, and then after lunch, I sorted and
delivered the mail. I really enjoyed this because I got to speak with several residents. I could tell
that me spending just a few minutes talking/listening to them meant a lot, so this was rewarding.
After I finished the mail, I worked on a few more resident files and then I went home.
Wednesday 11/16/18 8:30-2:30: I arrived and helped with cleaning up from breakfast. After
this, Amber was not in because she had a doctor’s appointment, so I sat back in the room that
they have designated to the interns and I worked on some more files like I did on Tuesday. When
Lauren arrived, she had us set up for a baby shower party. I worked on files until lunch, and then
delivered the mail after lunch. After lunch, they facility was having a party for all the January
birthdays, so me and the other two interns helped with giving out cupcakes and ice cream for
this. After the party, we took the remaining cupcakes and ice cream to the memory care unit to
offer that to those residents. They really enjoyed it. Working back there was a lot different than
working in the main part of the building, because those residents are not all there mentally. This
I went home on to have my wisdom teeth removed on Thursday morning, so I did not
WEEK 2
Tuesday 1/22/19 7:30-1:30: I arrived this morning and helped serve and clean up breakfast.
After this, I shadowed the activities director. There was a tea party going on this day, so we
helped set up and serve for that. After the tea party, I visited with some of the residents. We
helped serve lunch, and then I was done for the day.
Wednesday 1/23/19 7:30-2:00: I did the usual helping with breakfast upon my arrival this
morning. Then I shadowed the activities director again and after devotion in the morning, I
attended the exercise class. This is a 30-minute video of a chair workout. There were only two
other residents in attendance. After the workout class, we went to Walmart. Two residents came
along. The other residents went around to all the rooms to check and see if anyone needed
anything before we left, so Cheyenne and I picked up the things that were on the list. After we
got back from the store, it was lunch time. We helped serve and then we had a meeting with the
activities directors to discuss possible activities we could help plan. I had been thinking about
how we could implement some health related activities for the residents and when I was thinking
about it, I realized that for the age that we are working with, many of them are physically
restricted from anything other than a basic exercise class which they already have. So, I think
that planning any type of activity for them is going to benefit their mental and social health. It is
easy, especially for their age to kind of keep to themselves, so I think that planning any type of
activity to get them out of their room and socializing with us and other residents will be very
beneficial. We discussed doing a super bowl party for the residents. We also decided that we
three interns would plan some type of health/nutrition class for the residents once a month. Next
Thursday, we are going to make smoothies for them and explain the health benefits of the
ingredients. For our big project, we all decided that it would be really cool to have a small health
fair at the home. This would be open to the residents, their families, and the people who work
there. The three of us would divide up the different topics like health, nutrition, and fitness. We
are still working on ideas for this but we are leaning in the direction of a health fair. This would
probably be most beneficial because I have noticed it is hard to keep the residents attention for a
long period of time, and I have a feeling that if we just tried to formally lecture to them for 40
minutes, many would either fall asleep or leave. After this meeting, I went home.
Thursday 1/24/19 7:30-1:30: I preformed the usual duties this day of helping with breakfast and
shadowing the activities director. I also helped out at the front desk. Working at the front desk, I
learned about the different required classes/certifications that the employees had to have, for
example, everyone has to take a class on Alzheimer’s. This is because if someone in memory
care got out of the hall, an employee on the assisted living side would hopefully be able to
recognize signs and help assist them back to their side. I also helped answer phones and dealt
Friday 1/25/19 11:30-6:00: I came in and helped serve lunch. After lunch, they had bingo and I
called out the numbers for them. This was fun and there was a really good turnout of residents.
After this, Will and I delivered the mail to each residents room. We then helped with happy hour
Saturday 1/26/19 12:00-2:30: I came in and helped with lunch service. I was supposed to help
with putting on a movie at 1:30, but no residents showed up, so I just delivered mail and sat with
some of the residents and listened to them talk. I could tell they were really glad to have
someone to listen.
WEEK 3
Monday 1/28/19 10:00-4:00: Today, I came in and did the regular routine of helping with
delivering mail, shadowing the activities directors and helping some at the front desk. Cheyenne
Tuesday 1/29/19 9:00-2:30: I did the usual tasks today (mail, helping serve meals, and helping
Wednesday 1/30/19 8:00-3:30: Today, I came in and helped expedite breakfast, which means
that I read out the orders to the kitchen workers as they plated them. Then, I spent the rest of the
day working the front desk because the regular front desk person, Amber, was out. This went
pretty well, and I enjoyed the face to face interactions that I had.
Thursday 1/31/19 9:45-1:15 : Today was a usual day, except that Will, Cheyenne and I had a
smoothie activity for the residents. We made three different, naturally sweetened smoothies for
the residents to try and will be providing the recipes for these smoothies. They really enjoyed
this activity. We look forward to trying to plan some more events like this for the residents.
Friday 2/1/19 9:30-3:00: I came in this morning and did the usual routine of mail, helping serve
lunch, and making some decorations for the party on Sunday. I also spent some time at the front
desk and dealt with some resident issues and answered the phones. One thing that I dealt with
was a lady who was having trouble with her emergency call button. She was not holding it down
for the proper amount of time, so I was able to help her figure that out and she was really
grateful.
Sunday 2/3/19 3:00-5:00: We went in today and hosted a small Super Bowl kickoff party for the
residents. We popped popcorn for them and we had drinks. We also had a small game where
people could guess the number of mints in a jar and the winner got a flower. There was a pretty
good turnout and the residents seemed really happy that we came in on the weekend.
Week 3 Hours: 30 hours
WEEK 4
Monday 2/4/19 9:00-3:30: Today was the regular routine, but we had an event for the residents
in the morning. We made tissue paper flowers. There was a good turnout, and they seemed to
like the activity a lot. It seemed to bring back a lot of memories for them, as they said they
remembered doing that in grade school. It was also beneficial to them because it got them to use
their hands and fingers and exercised fine motor skills. We then cleaned up from the event and
Wednesday 2/6/19 8:00-3:30: Today, I came in early to work the front desk and then when
Amber got in at 11, I went with the other interns and Shannon, one of the activities directors, to
Walmart. We had a list from some residents of things that they needed, so we got those, and we
also got supplies for a wreath making event on Thursday. When we got back, we served lunch
and then worked on cutting up strips of fabric for the wreath making event the next day. We also
Thursday 2/7/19 9:00-2:00: Today was a regular day, and we had the wreath making event.
There was a good turnout, and we even had two ladies from the memory care side come and
participate. This was also a good exercise for improving fine motor skills, as they used their
hands to tie the pieces of ribbon around the wreath frame. The rest of the day was spent by
helping with lunch and delivering mail and planning for future activities.
Friday 2/8/19 10:00-5:30: Today, we came in and discussed some possible events among
ourselves, including a parfait bar, where we educate on the healthy toppings that can be used,
President’s Day trivia, and playing Wii Sports with the residents. We helped with lunch, and then
helped call out bingo. Will and I led happy hour, and it went really well. We played Frank
Sinatra on the television, per the resident’s request. They really seem to enjoy getting together
and they especially seemed to enjoy Will and I being there and socializing with them. We then
talked with Lauren for a little bit before we left and briefly discussed our “activities” project and
WEEK 5
Monday 2/11/19 9:00-4:00: Today, we worked on preparing for our parfait bar activity. We also
helped deliver mail and helped with meal service. We made a printout to give the residents that
explained the nutritional benefits of the different toppings we had available (blueberries,
almonds, granola, banana, strawberries, and blackberries). We also compared the nutritional
value of Greek yogurt and regular yogurt and explained that Greek yogurt is generally healthier
and has more nutritional value than regular yogurt. We printed out copies for all of the residents
Tuesday 2/12/19 9:00-3:00 Today, we had our parfait demonstration. We gave the handouts to
each of the residents, and we also made a little order sheet that they all were able to fill out and
put what they wanted. There was a great turnout to this event! And almost everyone really liked
the parfaits and were interested in where we purchased the yogurt, etc. Dr. K also came today to
observe and talk with our advisers. It was great to show him around and the residents that we
introduced him to were so excited to meet him. We worked the rest of the day on planning some
future activities and we did our usual help with the mail and food service as well.
Wednesday 2/13/19 8:00-4:00 Today, I came in early to work the front desk for Amber. I also
expedited breakfast. This went well. Will and I went with Shannon to the Walmart in Eatonton
because she was worried about the Norovirus. So, we got all the lists from residents and
purchased their items and delivered them when we got back. We also helped with lunch and
mail. Before we left, Lauren asked if we could make a Norovirus handout for the residents and
Thursday 2/14/19 9:00-3:00 Today, we had an event where the residents came up with phrases
that had “heart” in them. This had a pretty good turnout and the residents seemed to enjoy it. We
also worked on the Norovirus sheet, and Will and I delivered it to all of the residents room. Some
of them had heard about it and some of them had not, so we explained that there had been “a
Friday 2/15/19 10:00-2:30: Today was very quiet and kind of slow, but we helped at the front
desk a little bit and then we helped with meal service. We also worked on brainstorming for
some future events. And I also had a very busy day Friday because my roommate had FOUR
friends come to stay with us for the weekend from out of town, so I totally forgot to do my
WEEK 6
types of drinks served at the facility (orange juice, cranberry juice, green tea, coke, milk, and
lemonade). There was a pretty good turnout for this and we made a handout for them to keep that
had tips on cutting down on sugar intake. Some of the residents were very shocked by this and
were wanting advice on how to monitor their sugar intake and others said “It don’t make no
difference, we’re gonna drink it anyway.” Overall, this was a good activity and the residents
expressed more interest in health activities like this. We would like to do some more activities
that breakdown nutrition that they are getting in the facility as well as do a presentation on diet
drink sweeteners vs. sugar and other sweeteners. They seemed very interested in this idea. I also
Wednesday 2/20/19 8:00-3:00: I came in early this morning and worked the front desk because
Amber is now on maternity leave. We will be working the front desk from 8-3 for the next
month or so. This went well. A couple came in and I gave them a tour which went well. We also
Thursday 2/21/19 8:00-3:00: I worked the front desk again today, and I dealt with some
paperwork for employees and residents. I basically organized some files and made sure that they
had all of the paperwork they needed to have on file. I also helped with lunch and I sorted the
mail. We were going to do a walker tag craft this day, but a resident passed away this week and
the funeral service was that day, so we postponed the event. However, there was good interest in
this idea (of making name tags for walkers), so the residents are really looking forward to
participating in that.
WEEK 7
Monday 2/25/19 8:00-3:30: Today I came in early for the front desk. I worked on typing and
printing out the weekly menus and working on the video slideshow for the front desk. The video
slideshow has daily menus on it and it also has a daily schedule. This is viewed by the residents,
their families, and any other guests that come in the facility. I have been using a designing
website that makes it “pretty,” so this has been a fun job for my creative side. Also, today people
from corporate came in and had an updated staff handbook meeting. Two of the ladies were new,
so I gave them all a tour of the facility. I sat at the front desk for the remainder of the day
Tuesday 2/26/19 9:00-2:30: Today was pretty slow. We were going to do an activity for the
residents about natural vs artificial sweeteners, but Cheyenne had a family emergency come up,
so we decided to postpone the talk. Will and I ran the front desk. I helped expedite lunch today
Wednesday 2/27/19 8:00-3:00: I came in early this morning. When Will and Cheyenne got in,
we planned an activity for the Memory Care side. We put different dominos in the printer and
made several different sheets with different dominos on them. Then, we laminated these sheets,
and we will take them to the memory care side and have them try to match the domino on top of
the picture. This will be a good brain game for them as well as good one-on-one activity time.
Thursday 2/28/19 9:00-3:00: Today was pretty uneventful. We did the usual planning some
events and answering phones and working on the mail. I helped serve lunch today as well.
Friday 3/1/19: 9:00-3:00: Today we finalized the activities calendar for March, and we have
some good activities for both the assisted living side as well as the memory care section, so I am
excited for that! I was feeling pretty under the weather today though, so after serving lunch and
WEEK 8
Monday 3/4/19 8:00-12:00: Today, I came in and worked the front desk for the early part of
the day. I also worked on printing the daily menus that are displayed around the facility as
well as the table tents with activities and the tv PowerPoint. This was all I worked on today as
well as answering phones, because I was not feeling well, so I left a little early.
Tuesday 3/5/19 8:30-4:30: Today, I came in and finished up the slideshow for the tv and also
worked on prepping for the Mardi Gras activities we had planned. We decorated cookies and
had the residents share their Mardi Gras experiences on the assisted living side. There was a
pretty poor turnout for this activity. For the memory care side, we made cookies for them and
I also decorated some bottles and put beans in them to use as shakers. I planned for the
residents to shake these and dance to some jazz/Mardi Gras music. However, when we went
over there, almost all of the residents were sleeping. On the memory care side, they operate by
how the residents are feeling, since most of them are pretty advanced in their mental decline,
we just had to roll with it and we left the things over there for them to use when they were all
awake. I helped serve lunch today. I also sorted and delivered the mail and sat one on one
with several residents and chatted with them. I think this was my favorite part of the
afternoon.
Wednesday 3/6/19 8:00-4:00: Today, I did all the usual stuff. I helped at the front desk,
helped with lunch, and then went with Colleen to get supplies for our craft on Thursday.
Thursday 3/7/19 9:00-2:30: Today, we had a St. Patrick’s craft for the residents. They got to
decorate a shamrock themed centerpiece. They really seemed to enjoy this craft. We displayed
their finished products around the facility, and they also seemed really happy about that. I
helped with the front desk for the rest of the day.
Friday 3/8/19 12:00-6:00: I came in and worked the front desk until Vicki got in at 3, then I
helped set up for happy hour. I led happy hour on my own and it went well. A lady came in
and played the piano, which they loved. She would play a song, and then have them guess the
name. They enjoyed this. I went back to the kitchen and took care of all of the stuff I used for
WEEK 10
Monday: I was on spring break. We went skiing in Snowshoe, West Virginia. The house we
rented was really nice, and there was supposed to be wifi. However, about an hour away, all of
us but two lost cell phone service and never got it back the whole week until we got back
Thursday. The wifi at the house was out. SO, I did not get to submit my journal last week. That
Tuesday: We went skiing. I only fell 3 times. For dinner I cooked white chicken chili.
Wednesday: This was our last day skiing. It was a lot of fun. It was very cold and windy. I was
Thursday: I got up and we all packed. We were on the road by 10, and we had 9 hours to drive.
This was the worst drive of my life. It was so long and windy and we kept losing cell phone
service. We ate lunch at Chick Fil A and then stopped two more times for gas. A rock hit my
Friday: I worked at my afterschool job, and then I went home to be with family for the rest of
the weekend.
WEEK 11
Monday 3/25 8:00-4:00: Today, I came in at 8, and Amber was back. So, I was able to work on
writing down some activity details this day. I helped serve lunch and deliver mail as well.
Tuesday 3/26 8:30-4:30: I helped some at the front desk this morning, and then Will, Cheyenne
and I were able to spend some time discussing our last few activities that we will be doing. We
are planning on doing an epi related activity as well as a nutrition activity. Since our presentation
is the 12, we only have another week to log our activities that we will be doing for our
presentation. We helped serve lunch and deliver mail, and then helped Shannon and Collene with
Wednesday 3/27 9:00-4:00: Today was like the rest of the week, helping with mail and food
service. I also called out bingo this afternoon. It was a lot of fun. I also prepared for the activity
that we did on Thursday by printing out the sheets and cutting them to size. I also set out the
plates for the paints as well as the q-tips that they used as paint brushes.
Thursday 3/28 9:00-4:00: Today, we had a craft activity. The residents used their fine motor
skills to paint dots on a sheet that I gave them and really enjoyed the outcome. I was worried that
they might think this activity was too childlike, but they really enjoyed it and were all pleased
with the uniqueness of each piece. We also helped serve lunch and do the mail. I also helped out
some time one-on-one with a couple of residents and chatted with them, which they really
seemed to enjoy. I also displayed the craft that we did the day before in a window in the library.
Several people commented on how they liked it. Lastly, I helped with happy hour and played
some older music on the tv for the residents. There was a pretty good turn our for happy hour this
week.
WEEK 12
Monday 4/1 8:30-4:30: I came in today and did all of the usual stuff (mail, lunch, plan activities,
etc). Lauren was out today because her kids are on spring break, so it was pretty quiet.
Tuesday 4/2 9:00-5:00: Today, I came in and worked the front desk for the early part of the
day. I also worked on printing the daily menus that are displayed around the facility as wel l as
the table tents with activities and the tv PowerPoint. I also helped deliver mail. We also went
over to the memory care side to assist with the music playing. This was pretty chaotic and
Wednesday 4/3 8:30-4:30: Today, I went with Shannon and Collene to the store to get lists for
the residents. There were quite a few lists today and we divided and conquered to get everything.
We ended up having to go to both Walmart and Kroger to get all of the stuff, but we were able to
get everything. We also played bingo on the memory care side, which was not very smooth
important because a lot of the residents really enjoy seeing decorations put up and appreciate the
thought that goes into it. We also helped serve lunch and deliver mail.
Friday 4/5 10:00-5:30: Today I came in and did the usual stuff. However, the owner of the
facility came in and took all of the managers out for lunch, so we just kind of sat around for a
good bit of the day with nothing to do, but we took advantage of this time to work on our project
so that was nice. I helped with happy hour and there was a good turnout today. I also had to
make an emergency run to Kroger for Milk of Magnesia for the med cart.
Sunday 4/7 11:00-1:30: I came in today to pick up some extra hours. I helped serve lunch and
clean up. I also did some puzzling with a resident and we had a good chat. It was a really relaxed
day and I am glad I got to go in and spend some time with them. I also took some time
calculating and I need to get 36 hours per week for the next 4 weeks and I will meet my hour
WEEK 13
Monday 4/8 9:00-4:00: Today, I helped with food service, mail, and worked on the final project.
Lauren met with Will and I to discuss what we will be doing for the rest of the semester. We will
be working on updating resident files and making sure they all have the correct and most recent
information. Another thing we will work on is making a better system for residents to get their
laundry instructions done for the housekeeping workers. This is important for resident care and
to have their laundry done smoothly. During my time at the front desk, I got a lot of complaints
Wednesday 4/10 9:00-4:00: Today, we worked on filing doctors orders and other paperwork
into patient folders. We did this on both the memory care side and assisted living. Assisted living
had about 40 folders, and they were also all out of order so we alphabetized them and rearranged
them in a nice organized way. We also went through all of the folders to check their Medicare
card number to see if it was up to date or not. For those who needed an updated card on file, we
wrote their names on a list so the managers could look over that.
Thursday 4/11 9:00-3:00: Today we worked mostly on our project. But also, I went around and
took photos of all of the residents individually so that Jared (LPN) could update all of their
pictures in their online medical file. Most of the residents were fine with having their picture
taken but a couple of them were weird about it. I also helped a blind resident write out an Easter
Friday 4/12 9:30-3:00: Today, we presented our final project. Most of the morning was spent
preparing for this, but we also went to Memory Care and took photos of all of those residents.
The presentation went really well I think and it was nice to share everything we did with Dr. K!
Sunday 4/14 11:00-2:00: I came in to help with lunch today and pick up a few extra hours. I
helped take some residents to and from lunch that were in wheel chairs. I helped clean up after
lunch, and then I spent some time talking to some residents one on one about different things. I
WEEK 14
Monday 4/15/19 9:00-4:00: Today, we helped with lunch and mail. We also talked with Lauren
and Shannon about a spring picnic that they might be throwing the week that we leave. Lauren
asked us to help them plan this, and I am looking forward to it. We looked into some prices for
different things and then met back with Lauren and gave her the information.
Tuesday 4/16/19 9:00-4:00: Today I did mail, helped with lunch, and took photos of employees
for the employee directory. I also helped a blind resident with putting together some Easter
baskets. He was very appreciative of my help. I am glad that I was able to assist him and I am
going to miss little rewarding moments like that when I am done at Fellowship Home.
Wednesday 4/17/19 9:00-4:30: Today, we went with Shannon and Collene to Kroger to get
stuff for residents. Two residents came with us. One of the residents is a new resident and I think
she was happy to get out and socialize a little bit, she really seemed to enjoy chatting. I helped
Thursday 4/18/19 9:00-3:00 & 5:00-8:00: Today, we worked on taking photos of employees
for the employee directory. We also helped serve lunch and deliver mail. I came back in the
evening to assist Collene in taking the residents to a local church for an Easter service. We took
8 residents and I helped get their walkers on the bus and helped them walk to the bus and into the
Friday 4/19/19 9:30-5:30: Today, I did a little bit of everything. I took some employee photos
for the directory. I also worked on some resident files and updating them to make sure they had
all of the required paperwork. After helping with lunch, I called bingo. Then, I delivered the
mail. For the rest of the afternoon, I sorted scrubs in the back room for employees. I then made a
sign to put on all of the tables letting the residents know that there would be no church service on
WEEK 15
Monday 4/22 9:00-5:00: Today I came in and made cookies for the front desk. Then, I helped
Collene with morning devotion. I read the message and she read the Bible verses that went along
with it. After devotion, I worked at the front desk for a little bit. I helped expedite lunch after
that. For the rest of the day, we worked on mail and planning the picnic. We also had the bingo
auction today, which the residents really enjoyed. We had a variety of prizes for them and they
could use the “bingo bucks” they win during bingo to bid on different items. A lot of residents
Tuesday 4/23 9:00-4:00: This morning I came in and met with Lauren and Collene and we
talked about the picnic. We decided on decorations and we came up with ideas for the menu and
things like that. We decided to split up the memory care side and the assisted living side and do
two separate picnics on two days. This will help the event run better and we will make it run
more smoothly. Then we went to Hobby Lobby to buy flowers and decorations for the picnics. I
think it is going to look really nice. We are using bring, summery colors to decorate, which the
residents (esp the memory care residents). For the rest of the day, I helped with lunch, mail, and
Wednesday 4/24 9:00-4:00: Today I helped with lunch, mail, and I called bingo. We also
worked on making labels for the picnic boxes and did a little more brainstorming for the picnics.
Amber ran to the store to get something for the kitchen. I also helped expedite lunch and clean
up.
Friday 4/26 9:00-5:00: Today was pretty quiet. I helped with mail and lunch. I also called
bingo. After bingo, I interviewed a resident for the resident spotlight in the newsletter. She was
feeling sick, so I tried to be as quick as possible, but it was interesting to hear about her
Week 15 Hours: 36
