What is Mitosis
and the Cell Cycle
– Mitosis is a type of cell division that results in
two daughter cells each having the same
number and kind of chromosomes as the
parent nucleus.
– The nuclear membranes breaks apart which
allows Mitosis to began.
– The cell cycle is the phase in which a cell in
preparation for cell division.
– There are five parts to the cell cycle including
the interphase, The prophase ,The metaphase ,
the anaphase ,and the telophase.
Stages of the Cell Cycle

Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Interphase

– The interphase begins the process of the cell

cycle in Mitosis.
– DNA copies itself in preparation to divide.
– The chromosomes are not visible and the DNA
appears as uncoiled chromatin.
– The cell has to increase it size as well.
– In the phase of interphase protein molecules
are created and single organelle are doubled.
The Prophase

– In the prophase the chromatin in the nucleus

then condense into spindle fibers.
– Spindler fiber are bridge like structures that
are at each end of the cell.
– The Spindler fiber cause the cell’s membrane
to break down.
Metaphase

– The chromosomes become attached to the

spindle fibers.
– Have attached and the chromosomes have
lined up on the metaphase plate
– Separation of sister chromatids to opposite
mitotic spindle poles
The Anaphase

– In the anaphase is where the chromosomes

move away from one another to opposite
poles of the spindle.
– The spindle fibers begin to shorten and pull
the sister chromatids apart.
Telophase

– The chromatids or chromosomes move to

opposite ends of the cell and two nuclei are
formed.
– Nuclear vesicles in the cell begin to re-form
around the group of chromosomes at each
end.
Overview

– Mitosis is a type of cell division that results in

two daughter cells each having the same
number and kind of chromosomes as the
parent nucleus.
– There are five stages to the cell cycle that led
in to a new cell forming.
– There are five parts to the cell cycle including
the interphase, The prophase ,The metaphase,
the anaphase ,and the telophase.
