An Upper-Molar Distalizer with
Palatal Miniscrew Anchorage
T his article describes a modi-
fication of the Jones Jig* con-
cept used to distalize upper mo-
lars with palatal miniscrew
anchorage.
Procedure
The technique is demon-
strated in a 13-year-old male pa-
tient with a skeletal Class I mal-
occlusion, a bilateral Class II
molar relationship, blocked-out

upper canines, upper crowding,
and anterior crossbite before
treatment (A).
1.  Insert two palatal miniscrews
(8mm in length) just mesial to the
first molars, close to their centers
of resistance (B).
2.  Prepare an .035" stainless steel
base wire that crosses the palate
from the distal aspect of the left
first molar to the distal aspect of
the right first molar (C).

3.  Solder wire extensions ending
in S-shaped hooks to each side of
this transpalatal arch, parallel to
the midpalatal raphe, so that they
extend as anteriorly as possible.
The arm extensions should also
be at the level of the molars’ cen-
ters of resistance to ensure bodily
distalization and less molar tip-
ping during distalization (D).

Longer extension arms will allow
longer power chains to be at-
tached to the miniscrews to gen-
erate a distalizing force vector on
the first molars. Ligating the
miniscrews to the S-shaped arms
will provide anchorage for the
first molars if distalization is not
required.
4. Microetch the .035" stainless
steel wire, and bond the transpala-

gual surfaces of the first molars.
In this patient, progress re-
cords were taken after six months
