Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Creating this book will feel purposeful since students are creating them for someone.
Representation: PowerPoint allows for many forms of representation through its tools. Students should know
how to use different tools (transitions, backgrounds, pictures, text styles, audio)
Action and Expression: Students will record themselves reading the book. They can express their voice in this
aspect of the project. They also get to decide what the book will be about.

Lesson idea implementation:

The completion of this lesson will take place over a time period of two weeks. It is likely that technology will
not be available every day during the two weeks, so it may take additional time. The initial introduction will
take place in the classroom. The teacher will begin by posting the standard on the board and reading it aloud.
Teacher will then introduce the activity. Students will be creating an eBook to send to their reading buddy (a
kindergartener assigned to each student. 5th graders read to them once a month during ELA time). The
teacher will use the overhead projector to display an example. Each day, students will focus on a different
aspect of their book. The first few work days will take place in the classroom. The first aspect will be the
script. Students will write out ten to fifteen sentences on the (appropriate) topic of their choice. The next day,
students will decide on the picture they would like for each slide. They will not be finding the picture on this
day, but they will write next to each sentence the general idea of the picture they would like.

The following portion of the lesson would take place in the computer lab or in the classroom with a laptop
cart. Students should have prior knowledge on creating a PowerPoint, but the teacher will be assisting
students as necessary. Each day will be devoted to a specific aspect of the eBook. The first day will be typing
in the story. The second day will be finding and adding photos. The third day would be recording and adding
audio. The final visit would be for transitions. The teacher will begin each time in the computer lab/classroom
demonstrating the aspect of the day. They will then walk around the classroom as students are working to
assist anyone in need. The teacher will help students export their PowerPoints to be able to share. They will
be posted on each student’s One Drive. They will be able to access their eBook on an iPad provided to them

during their next reading with a buddy time. Students will also share the file with the teacher. The teacher will
post these on the class website.

Reflective Practice:
I believe that this activity will positively impact student learning. Students will feel their creation has purpose.
Seeing their work published on the classroom blog will be exciting for them. Extending this lesson, students
could use the same story to create a representation of it using multiple different softwares. They could have
the freedom to decide which program to use. These could also be posted on the classroom website.
