Talk at the Right Time: Teach students that talking can be a distraction if used at the
wrong time, but purposeful if used at the right time.
Countdown: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5…
Domino Effect: Give positive cueing to students around students that are off task.
Distract the Distractor: Instead of calling attention to the off-task behavior, re-engage
the student with a content-based question.
Home Visits: Go with a purpose, build bridges between home and school, establish
meaningful relationships with families, show you care about the student’s well being
inside and outside of the classroom.

Classroom Layout: What does each students’ perspective look like/feel like, is there
room for class meetings and team building, does the layout accommodate foot traffic,
can the teacher use proximity with every student, does the layout promote exploration of
the classroom materials, resources, and library?
Check in with students during the lesson: “How well do you understand this?” Silent
signal with 1, 2, or 3 fingers.

Tracking: Have students track the speaker with their eyes to show respect for the
speaker and help audience stay focused and engaged.
Notes of Praise: Communicate with students and parents through heartfelt notes about
students making positive academic and social/emotional choices in the classroom.
Classroom Jobs: Don’t do anything in the classroom that the students can do
themselves. Give opportunities for students to care for and maintain their classroom and
community environment.
