Data & Project Timeline 2

Project Summary:
This project discusses the role that microglia play after ICH, and which molecules are a possible
component of an effective treatment. This research requires analysis of the various neuronal
effects of applied molecules after ICH.

Data Collection:
The experiment is currently in the middle of the data collection process, where numerous
quantitative and qualitative tests are run in order to determine overall neuronal health and
cognitive function after ICH.

Goals
● For the next week, continue to collect data through qualitative observation of mice and
physical dissection and analysis
● Ask questions of each aspect of data collection to fully understand the process and
importance of each step
● In the long term, discuss with mentor the possibility of receiving a role in the overall
writing process of the research. If this is not possible, discuss what other methods I may
be able to contribute to this research.

Accomplishments
● Helped to collect and analyze the data by recording the amount of time that each mice
spent in the “newer” areas as well as the time spent frozen in the shock test in order to
measure cognitive brain function after ICH was induced.
● Analysis was conducted by comparing the qualitative results with the treatment/lack
thereof that was applied to the mice before data collection.

This project discusses the role that microglia play after ICH, and which molecules are a possible
component of an effective treatment. This research requires analysis of the various neuronal
effects of applied molecules after ICH.
Data Collection:
The data collection for this experiment has continued to progress as quantitative data has
been collected and is currently under analysis. This analysis is conducted through the usage of a
computer program which is able to detect the amount of time that the mice spends frozen. This
then allows the researchers to determine the cognitive ability of the mice to remember the
classical training that it had undergone the previous day. Mice with stronger cognitive
capabilities would therefore spend more time frozen, while mice with weaker capabilities would
spend less time in a frozen state. Additionally, more data on the mice will be collected through
physical dissection.

Goals
● For the next week, continue to collect data through physical dissection while analyzing
the videos of the mice to determine cognitive capability.
● Refresh knowledge of basic statistics in order to understand the way that the data will be
organized and presented.
● In the long term, discuss with mentor the possibility of receiving a role in the overall
writing process of the research. If this is not possible, discuss other ways that I may be
able to continue to contribute to this research.
Accomplishments
● Continued to collect and analyze the data by utilizing the computer program “ANY-
maze” to determine the time spent frozen in the shock test in order to measure cognitive
brain function after ICH was induced.
● Analysis was conducted by comparing the qualitative results with the treatment/lack
thereof that was applied to the mice before data collection.

Data and Project Timeline Week 4
Project Summary:
This project discusses the role that various molecules play after ICH, and which molecules are a
possible component of an effective treatment. This research requires analysis of the various
neuronal effects of molecules used in treatments applied after ICH is induced in mice.

Data Collection:
The experiment is currently in the middle of the data collection process, where numerous
quantitative and qualitative tests are run in order to determine overall neuronal health and
cognitive function after ICH.

Goals
● Continue to refresh knowledge of statistics to understand the analytical graphs produced
by the computer program after analysis of the videos of the mice.
● Begin the physical process of brain dissection and analysis, as well as immunostaining, in
order to gather quantitative data on the physical effects on the brain of the mice after ICH
and induced and treatment is applied.
● In the long term, discuss with mentor the possibility of receiving a role in the overall
writing process of the research. If this is not possible, discuss what other methods I may
be able to contribute to this research.

Accomplishments
● Collected and organized the data of the amount of time that the rats spent frozen during
the shock test.
● Analysis was conducted by comparing the qualitative results with the treatment/lack
thereof that was applied to the mice before data collection.

Data and Project Timeline Week 5
Project Summary:
This project discusses the role that various molecules play after ICH, and which molecules are a
possible component of an effective treatment. This research requires analysis of the various
neuronal effects of molecules used in treatments applied after ICH is induced in mice. This data
will be collected through a statistical analysis of the mice undergoing the shock test, as well as a
dissection of the brains of the mice.

● Continue the physical process of brain dissection of the mice in which ICH was induced,
as well as immunostaining of the brain samples, in order to gather quantitative data on the
physical effects on the brain of the mice after ICH is induced and treatment is applied.
● In the long term, discuss with mentor the possibility of receiving a role in the overall
writing process of the research. If this is not possible, discuss what other methods I may
be able to contribute to this research.

Accomplishments
● Began process of dissection and immunstraning of the brain samples taken from the mice
in which ICH was induced.
● Used the microscope camera in order to take pictures of the samples; took pictures of the
samples using different lenses to determine amounts of nuclei, microglia, and red blood
cells.
