The man who holds the pen is a knowledgeable and learned man, and those who hold the sword
become ineffective and unsuccessful. All respected well-known philosophers, writers, doctors,
poets, engineers, and wise educated men were guided by the pen. Their names still live today
even if them themselves are dead, because of their findings and doings. Had these people not
chosen the pen, their respect in society would have gone down with them in their graves, as if
Man has made robots, airplanes, radios, TV’s, computers, ships, and electricity. We have

Man is going beyond the moon today, and can predict weather. Doctors have found ways to cure
sicknesses which were formerly incurable. All this has been possible by the knowledge we have
The pen has won many countries’ independences, and national leaders have used it to obtain
the jewel of liberty. Thomas Paine published his thoughts in his weekly pamphlets, “Common
Sense―. Because of “ Common Sense,― many Americans during the American
Revolution were persuaded to rebel against the British, and win their independence. Martin
Luther King Jr. helped Black-White segregation end with his printed words and speeches. In
India, Gandhi used the pen and peacefully helped India attain its liberty. Without violence and
with words, Gandhi led groups to boycott British goods, such as tea and clothing.
The pen writes words, and these words have power. Words have power to persuade, influence,
dry tears, and forge smiles. Words can heal emotional wounds and eliminate fears. Intelligent
words can make you rich, wealthy, and happy in the future. When it’s your birthday or when
you’re sick, and you get a card, it’s not the looks of the card, but the words in it.
So drop the sword and pick up the pen. Unite the world and have global peace. Stop all wars and
live without fears. The words of a pen are powerful, both good and bad. The words of a pen are
always better than the fallen blood and gore of the sword. The sword is tyranny whereas the
pen’s middle name’s knowledge and wisdom. The sword will bring you nothing but
death and burdens, but the pen will bring you good luck, peace, success, and wealth. The power
of the pen is so great, that the pen will rule, as the sword will beg at its feet. Abolish the sword,
and live in the agenda of peace and knowledge. No matter what, the pen is always mightier than
the sword.
Take a second and imagine your life without an education, not even enough to learn how to read
or write. What is left? Can you imagine a future for yourself, nonetheless aspire to one? I know
that I would be nothing without my education, since it is my most valuable possession in life,
and I would not be dreaming nearly as big as I am now, at least not realistically. Now that you
have been deprived of something so valuable, watched as it was stolen from you, what are you
going to do about it? Are you going to sit around and hope that it eventually falls into your lap
This may seem like a faraway, hypothetical situation that may have been a problem a hundred
years ago, but unfortunately, it is still a very real issue for females that plagues other parts of the
world less fortunate than countries like the United States. Globally, “77.6 million girls are
minds. In other developing nations, girls are not forbidden from educating themselves, but the
education is not free, so many parents cannot afford to send them to school or choose to educate
The UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) meeting in
2000 set the goal of establishing “universal basic education by 2015”. This goal seems out of
reach, with only a little over a year left to complete it. Nations that are still developing are the
main area of the problem for girl’s education. For example, about half of the females in sub-
Saharan Africa do not finish primary school. Orphaned, disabled, or refugee children are even
less likely to enroll. In these areas, the ultimate decision about whether or not a child should be
educated lies in the hands of the parents. With such difficulty to maintain their heads above
water and provide for their families, many decide to keep their daughters at home in order to put
them to work outside or inside the home. Some parents are also uncomfortable with the long
Education should not be a “precious gift”, instead, it should be a basic right to all females, just as
it is for all males, regardless of economic standing, social class, or religious beliefs. This is 2013,
not 1920 when women just gained the right to vote. This is no longer the age of “all men are
created equal.” Girls should not have acid thrown in their faces, like Shamsia Husseini, because
they have dreams bigger than the confines of the home, nor should they be the second choice to
their brother. “Words and pens are more powerful than guns”, as the young, yet wise Malala
Yousufzai proclaimed even after being shot in the head by the Taliban (Whitcraft and Pearson).
The famous proverb ‘Pen is Mightier than the Sword’ was first written by Edward Bulwer-
Lytton, which later became highly popular across the world. Everyone knows that a sword is a
weapon with sharp edge while pen is a writing instrument with no edge. But the power of the pen
is extremely greater than a sword. What a sharp edge of a sword can’t achieve; can easily be
The famous proverb ‘Pen is Mightier than the Sword’ has a great significance since ages. It
denotes that the pen is more powerful than the sword; irrespective of the fact that the sword has a
sharp edge and the power to kill and win wars. From the ancient days, sword has played an
important role in the history of mankind. We all know that the sword has the power of winning
wars because of the great strength and valour it possesses. But a pen on the other hand, despite
being delicate is much mightier and endowed with the capacity to transform history and
mankind.
Meaning
While a pen and sword cannot be compared because pen is used for writing purposes and sword
is used for fighting purposes. But the writer through the proverb ‘Pen is Mightier than the
Sword’, intends to say that the power and strength of writing is mightier and stronger than the
influence of war. A war is always destructive and ends lives. Sword can only kill and thus result
into defeat, loss and death. Even though, one party in the war may win but the loss of several
lives is the ultimate loss of even the winning party; whereas writing is harmony, peace and it is
priceless. Books written with pen give us education, knowledge and wisdom which remain with
us forever. We can never pay back for the tales and stories told to us in our childhood by our
grandparents, parents, teachers, etc for those stories taught us lesson which we preserve for our
lifetime.
There are various quotes and proverbs written and said about books such as: ‘Books are the
treasure house of knowledge’, ‘Books are the best companion’, ‘Books are the way to the Truth’
and many more. A book written in pen makes it powerful and worth reading. Not every book is
useful as some may teach wrong lessons; some books may be restricted or forbidden. So, it’s the
pen which makes the book powerful. Such mighty, the pen is!
The power of pen can also be understood from the fact that one incorrect answer written in the
answer sheet during exams, tests, etc might fall heavily on us. We are able to know about
history, geography, religion, science, etc all by reading and pen plays an important role in letting
the writer pen down the important knowledge and information for the generations to come.
History is the proof that writers have changed the world through their writings. Mahatma
Gandhi, John Keats, Swami Vivekananda, William Wordsworth and many more have created
magic through their writing. Pen has the power to break the demographic barriers or a book can
be written in one country and can be read across the world. Writers through their preaching and
knowledge fight against various social evils and bring transformation in the society.
Written by the famous author Edward Bulwer-Lytton, the proverb ‘The Pen is Mightier than the
Sword’ holds great significance with simple yet profound meaning. It suggests that the writers of
the world leave a greater influence on people than the soldiers; for the world recognises the name
of several famous writers such as William Wordsworth, John Keats, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee,
Rabindranath Tagore, etc but very few will be able to recognise the names of great soldiers who
won wars, battles, etc. For ages, pen has been creating wonders as written information gets
spread as knowledge which is preserved with people for their lifetime. The proverb clearly
indicates that the writers are more influential than the mighty fighters and the sword cannot build
Writing can unite people to stand against social or national evil. Mahatma Gandhi through his
preaching and knowledge united the citizens; he didn’t fight but won the nation with his power
of wisdom and will. A war may result into victory to one party and defeat to the other at the cost
of several lives; but a book can enlighten the world without harming even a single person,
Pen is the weapon of writers, which they can use to create history. Pen is constructive, while
sword is destructive. A pen has the capacity to write novels, poems, humorous, emotional stories,
facts and figures related to Science, Maths, Geography, etc. One can find joy and peace by
reading and gain knowledge for lifetime. Writings can induce various emotions such as love,
kindness, hatred, enmity, sympathy etc. Writing is regarded with respect and writers are always
considered as the strong pillars of society as they have the power to change the world through the
magic of their writing. Even on national level, debates and discussions can solve various
altercations amongst differing countries, but war can destroy the economical and physical
strength of the countries. On personal level too, literature spreads knowledge but fighting
induces hatred.
