BRIDGE CRANES
1.0 SCOPE

This specification covers the minimum technical requirements for the


design, manufacture, and testing of overhead bridge cranes. For a
specific bridge crane, this specification shall be used in conjunction with
the Technical Requirements. Any exceptions to the requirements of this
specification shall be submitted in writing for resolution by the Company.

2.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

The Contractor shall consider the most recent issue of the applicable
standards and codes issued by the associations and approval bodies as
part of this specification listed in Appendix I.

3.0 REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Item Definition

A bridge crane is an underhung or top-running, single girder,


trolley-operated, overhead crane used for routine equipment
maintenance.

3.2 Characteristics

3.2.1 Performance

a. The crane shall be rated to handle the span and capacity stated in the
Technical Requirements.

b. The crane shall be service Class C as defined in CMAA 70,


Specification for Electric Overhead Traveling Cranes, and CMAA 74,
Specification for Top-Running and Underhung Single Girder Electric
Overhead Traveling Cranes. The crane shall be capable of handling
loads that average 50 percent of the rated capacity with 5 to 10 lifts
per hour averaging 15 feet, with not over 50 percent of all lifts at
rated capacity.

c. The crane shall be provided with lifting lugs to facilitate installation


and removal of the entire unit.

d. Crane performance shall be guaranteed for the specified rated


operating conditions.

e. No negative tolerance is permitted on capacity.

f. Bearings requiring lubrication shall be located to facilitate


replacement or service.

3.3 Design and Construction

3.3.1 General

a. The crane shall be a complete unit including all items necessary for
field installation, with the exception of the rails.

b. Dimensions such as building height, clearance, runway length, and


center to center of rails will be specified in the Project Technical
Requirements.

c. Bridge cranes shall be in accordance with CMAA 70 and CMAA 74 as


modified by this specification.

d. The crane shall be sized to handle the span and capacity required on
the Project Technical Requirements.

e. The Contractor shall have on hand any miscellaneous nuts, bolts, pins,
and other such items that might be lost or misplaced during assembly
and erection.

f. Load carrying parts, except structural members, hoisting ropes, and


gearing, shall be designed so that the calculated static stress in the
material, based on rated load, shall not exceed 20 percent of the
published average, ultimate strength of the material.

g. Unless otherwise specified, structural steel shall be in accordance with


ASTM A36, Specification for Structural Steel.

3.3.2 Bridge Girder

a. The crane bridge beam shall be a rolled wide-flange or I-beam in


accordance with ASTM A36.

b. Channel caps may be used if a built-up member is required for added


strength and economy.

c. Vertical, horizontal, torsional, and dead and live loads shall be


calculated according to the latest edition of CMAA 74.

d. The maximum vertical deflection of the girder produced by the dead


load, hoist weight, trolley weight, and rated load shall not exceed
0.00125 inch per inch of span. Impact shall not be considered in
determining deflection.

e. If necessary to prevent detrimental torsional and lateral deflection of


the bridge girder, an auxiliary girder constructed of a rolled shape
(e.g., channel) shall be provided to support overhanging loads, such

as bridge drive machinery.

3.3.3 Bridge-End Trucks

3.3.3.1 General

a. End trucks shall be of ample size to carry the rated load when lifted at
the extreme end of the bridge girder.

b. The minimum wheel base shall be 1/8 of the bridge span.

c. End trucks shall be line bored for true wheel alignment.

3.3.3.2 End Trucks and Parts for Underhung Cranes

a. End trucks for underhung cranes shall be provided with a minimum of


four, fixed, heat-treated steel axles, each with one wheel. The wheels
shall have the following characteristics.

 Single-flanged

 Forged alloy steel with tapered treads, flame hardened to a


minimum of 480 to 530 Brinell hardness number (BHN)

b. Wheels shall be supplied with two, tapered-roller bearings complete


with grease fittings positioned for easy access.

c. Bearings shall be sized for a B-10 bearing life of at least 5000 hours
based on full rated speed and vacuum degassed steel rating. The B-10
bearing life is defined in CMAA 70.

d. Drive wheel treads shall have the same diameter within a tolerance of
0.010 inch.

e. Two drive wheels shall be provided for each end truck.

f. Gear teeth shall be machine cut into the flange of the drive wheels.

3.3.3.3 End Trucks and Parts for Top-Running Cranes

a. End trucks for top-running cranes shall be provided with a minimum of


two, fixed, heat-treated steel axles, each with one wheel. The wheels
shall have the following characteristics.

 Double-flange

 Forged alloy steel with straight treads, flame hardened to a


minimum of 480 to 530 BHN

b. Drive wheels shall be matched pairs within 0.001 inch per inch of
diameter or a total of 0.010 inch, whichever is smaller.

c. One drive wheel shall be provided for each end truck.

d. Gear teeth shall be machine cut into the inside flange of the drive
wheels.

e. Wheels shall be designed to carry the maximum recommended loads


in accordance with Table 4.7.12 and Section 4.7.1.2 of CMAA 74.

3.3.4 Bridge Drive

a. The drive bridge shall be CMAA Type A-1 with electric motor, air
motor, or hand chain drive as specified in the Project Technical
Requirements.

b. A bridge brake or noncoasting mechanical drive shall be provided that


can stop the bridge within 10 percent of the distance the bridge would
travel at full speed with full load. (Load speed shall be measured in
feet per minute.)

c. Shafts, except cross shafts without gears, shall be machined at the


bearing and gear mounting positions. Intermediate bridge-cross
shafts may be commercial shafting.

d. Split compression couplings shall connect the cross shafts to the drive
shafts. The couplings shall be spaced one foot from the drive wheels.

e. Hardened steel pinion gears shall be keyed to the drive shafts. The
drive shafts shall have the same bearings as the cross shafts.

3.3.5 Trolley Hoists

Trolley hoists shall be low headroom type unless specified otherwise.


Hoists shall be electric motor, air motor, or hand chain driven as specified
in the Project Technical Requirements.

3.3.6 Identification and Marking

The bridge-crane capacity shall be marked on two porcelain-coated metal


signs legible from floor level. A sign shall be permanently affixed to each
side of the crane with stainless steel screws. Adhesive is not acceptable.

3.3.6.1 General

a. Shearing, flame cutting, and chipping shall be done by mechanically


guided tools, if possible.

b. If laminations or split ends are discovered in any plate, pipe, or rolled


shape, the entire member shall be removed and not used.

3.3.6.2 Welding

a. Welding design and procedures shall comply with the current issue of
AWS D14.1, Specification for Welding Industrial and Mill Cranes, with
the exception that tolerances for deviation from specified camber and
sweep shall be the manufacturer's standard tolerances rather than the
tolerances prescribed by Section 705 of AWS D14.1. Measurements
shall be taken at the manufacturer's plant prior to shipment.

b. The manufacturer shall submit welding procedures and welder


qualifications for approval by the Company.

c. All welds shall be seal welded to prevent corrosion.

3.3.7 Safety

Safety provisions shall be in accordance with Company Technical


Requirements, with the following additional requirements.

3.3.7.1 General

Controls shall operate in a fail-safe mode.

3.3.7.2 Guards for Moving Parts

a. Solid steel guards shall be provided to within 1/2 inch of stationary


housings adjacent to moving parts that are a potential personnel
hazard.

b. Screen, expanded metal, and plastic are not acceptable guards.

c. Guards shall be securely attached.

d. Guards shall be capable of supporting, without permanent distortion, a


200-pound person if the guard is located where a person might step.

3.4 Contractor Requirements

Contractor Requirements shall be in accordance with Company Technical


Requirements.

3.5 Proposals

3.5.1 General

a. Upon submittal of the bid, the Contractor shall furnish complete crane
specifications, size, and lifting capacities of all lines; basic dimensions;
weights; mounting details; hoist data; and other pertinent data
required to evaluate the crane for use on an offshore platform.

b. The proposal shall include the manufacturer's recommendations for


maintenance, inspection, and replacement of any parts of the crane
that may wear out under normal operating conditions.

3.6 Documentation Requirements

Documentation requirements shall be in accordance with Company


Technical Requirements.

4.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

Quality assurance provisions shall be in accordance with Company


Technical Requirements, with the following additional requirements.

4.1 Shop Tests

a. The crane manufacturer shall fully assemble the crane on a stand for
testing of the following.

 Functioning of all controls and safety devices


 Line speed of the hoist
 Bridge and trolley travel speeds

b. Tests shall not be completed until performance of the crane is verified


to be in accordance with the Project Technical Requirements.

4.2 Structural

a. A check shall be made to ensure that the structural members comply

with specifications and drawings.

b. At the discretion of the Company, 20 percent of all welds shall be


examined by magnetic particle or other approved inspection methods.

c. Lifting lugs and padeyes shall be checked for compliance with national
standards and codes.

4.3 Final Acceptance Tests

a. The crane shall be tested by lifting a calibrated load equal to 125


percent of the rated capacity.

b. The dimensions of all components shall be checked for compliance


with drawing dimensions and with this specification. Any components
not within the tolerances allowed by the drawings and this
specification shall be called to the attention of the Company.

c. Adequacy of crane support rails, including size and location, shall be


verified.

5.0 PREPARATION FOR SHIPPING AND STORAGE

Preparation for shipping and storage shall be in accordance with


Company Technical Requirements, and as follows:

Individual items shipped shall be uniquely numbered and tagged. The


numbers shall be referenced with the item description on the bill of
lading.
