Lesson Idea Name: Biome Video

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 7
Content Standard Addressed:
S7L4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to examine the interdependence of organisms with one
another and their environments. Ask questions to gather and synthesize information from multiple sources to differentiate
between Earth’s major terrestrial biomes (i.e., tropical rain forest, savanna, temperate forest, desert, grassland,
taiga, and tundra) and aquatic ecosystems (i.e., freshwater, estuaries, and marine)

Technology Standard Addressed:

Selected Technology Tool:

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration

☒ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Lesson idea implementation:

This project should take at least two 50 minute class periods to complete. Students will be in pairs and
choosing one of the seven biomes we reviewed in class. They will be creating a 2-3 minute video highlighting
the most important information and fun facts about this biome. They must include at least ten pictures
relating to their biome in the video, along with some sort of audio file and narration. The grades for this
assignment will not be based off of the quality of the video, but the student’s effort in creating a video to
display their knowledge on their favorite biome.

Importance of technology:
This project could be completed without using any kind of multimedia and instead writing it in an essay or
answering prompts. Instead, though, the use of video gives students the opportunity to become acquainted
with the technology they will be using in the rest of their years in school. Along with this they are able to show
their creativity through the video and break free from the usual written exams.

Inspiration (optional):
I came up with the idea for this activity by myself

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

A risk that should be considered is the use of google photos, where students would usually pull pictures form
to use in their presentations. Often times while using this browser inappropriate images could come up on
accident. To avoid this schools often have several child safety blocks for websites or accounts that could
potentially be dangerous or inappropriate for children.

Reflective Practice:
This impacts student learning as it gives them a medium to display their knowledge creatively and not through
the simple written assessments they usually have.
